David Letterman sent this witty rejection letter to Jimmy Kimmel in 2002

Jimmy Kimmel David Letterman

On Wednesday, David Letterman hosted the "Late Show" for the very last time.

Out of respect for his idol, Jimmy Kimmel aired a rerun of his competing late-night show.

"I have too much respect for Dave to do anything that would distract viewers from watching his final show," Kimmel recently told The New York Times. "Plus, I’ll probably be crying all day, which makes it hard to work."

Indeed, Kimmel did shed a few tears during his tribute to the veteran late-night host on Tuesday. But Kimmel's obsession with Letterman goes way back.

Kimmel, 47, has idolized Letterman, 68, since the younger late-night host was a quirky kid growing up in Vegas.

"His show was just so weird and different," Kimmel told Rolling Stone back in 2013. "I'd never seen anything like it. I didn't know anyone who had a sense of humor like that."

Kimmel has often joked that the only reason he went into show business was to be friends with Letterman — and wondered why anyone would watch his show instead of Letterman’s.

So when Kimmel was coming off four years as cohost of Comedy Central’s “The Man Show” and about to debut "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on ABC in 2002, naturally he reached out to Letterman to be a guest on the show’s premiere episode.

Letterman’s typed response — on personal stationery  today sits framed on Kimmel’s desk in his studio office, alongside a photo of his late grandparents and a picture of himself covered in whipped cream after popping a fictional zit on Jon Stewart’s forehead.

This is what the letter said. It's from September 23, 2002, and was uncovered by New York Magazine.

Dear Jimmy,

Thanks for asking me to appear on your premiere. Unfortunately, I will be out of the country on business. I’m sure the program will be a success regardless.

Sincerely,

Dave

"His response is hilarious," Kimmel told New York Magazine. "He’s not out of the country on business. He knows you know he’s not out of the country on business and just the words 'on business' — it really makes it a perfect letter for me."

Eleven years later, the two aren’t exactly best buddies. But Letterman did appear on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" for the first time in 2012, when the LA-based show broadcast out of Brooklyn after Hurricane Sandy.

Jimmy Kimmel David LettermanLetterman's appearance gave Kimmel his biggest Wednesday audience in the show's history — about 2.4 million viewers.

Leading up to the visit, Kimmel said he was "terrified" to interview Letterman and tried to justify it by saying, "I’m sure for him it’s nothing more than a nuisance, that he’s just doing it to be nice."

But Letterman was a gracious guest as Kimmel showed him photos of his "Late Night"-themed 18th-birthday cake:

Jimmy Kimmel David LettermanAnd "L8 Nite" license plate on his first car.

Jimmy Kimmel David LettermanLetterman responded by telling his No. 1 fan, "I’ll be honest with you, it was troubling. I kept saying to people, 'Why is he sucking up to me?' ... When I was persuaded that there was some measure of stability here, then I really realized that it was genuine and I couldn’t appreciate it more."

Letterman added, "In show business, one of the precepts is you're not really supposed to be nice to people, especially if you have the same occupation as another person. Jimmy has broken that precept and has been nothing but generous and courteous and kind to me."

Kimmel told Rolling Stone that, as a kid, he felt like Letterman was doing his show "specifically for [him]." And now, to return the favor, Kimmel won't do his show on Wednesday, specifically for Letterman.

Watch Letterman's ratings-raising 2012 appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

On Tuesday, Kimmel gave an emotional farewell tribute to Letterman, urging viewers to watch Dave's final show on Wednesday instead of his own.

Through tears, Kimmel explained: "Dave is the best and you should see him."

New Fall TV Shows rankings amobee main

This could be the biggest fall for television remakes, revivals and spinoffs. That could just be what the major networks really needed to cut through today's very dense TV landscape, because it's working.

Business Insider partnered with Amobee Brand Intelligence— a company that provides marketing insight and measures real-time content consumption across the internet, social, and mobile — to find out which new TV shows are actually breaking through the clutter and getting the most attention.

During the process, Amobee discovered that out of the 10 upcoming fall TV series that generated the most consumption between April 19-May 19, six were based on existing franchises. A whopping 88% of the digital consumption — a measure of how often a term/brand is actually “seen” online (600,000+ websites including mobile) and social media — around those 10 shows were shows based on existing franchises.

supergirl flying CBSCBS's "Supergirl"remake soared above next season's new shows, receiving the most digital consumption and thus setting the bar against which the other shows are compared.

The CW's "Arrow"-"Flash" spinoff "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" came in second at 69% of "Supergirl's" digital consumption.

In the third position, CBS's sequel to Bradley Cooper film "Limitless" came in at 51%.

It was followed by ABC's "The Muppets" revival in fourth place at 31%.

The first original series to break through is Fox's Ryan Murphy series "Scream Queens," which rounds out the Top 5 with 16%.

Much of the backstory for 'Mad Men' came from a movie script the creator never finished

Mad Men Don Draper

Warning: This article contains spoilers for season one of "Mad Men."

Even a character as iconic as Don Draper started on a scrap piece of paper.

Before Matthew Weiner began work on AMC's "Mad Men," his Emmy Award winning drama partially began as a failed screenplay called "The Horseshoe."

The screenplay was intended to be 85 pages long, but the version that exists now clocks in at around 77 pages. Weiner first started working on the script in 1992, but abandoned it five years before writing the pilot for "Mad Men."

According to a plaque at the Museum of the Moving Image, where pages from "The Horseshoe" can be seen in an extensive "Mad Men" exhibit, the script "features a character named Peter who is born to a prostitute in the 1930s, is raised in a brothel, adopts a dead man's identity, and achieves success and respectability as an adult in the 1960s." This eventually formed the backstory of Don Draper (Jon Hamm), the creative director of a New York advertising agency who is haunted by his dark past.

While we might never get to see a full film about Don Draper, at least "The Horseshoe" could inspire this character and provide for two of the best twists in "Mad Men" history.

Excerpts from the script, as well as Weiner's original notes for it, provide some fascinating insights into what eventually became of Draper and the show itself.

Weiner Sopranos

Weiner Sopranos 2While "The Horseshoe" didn't directly inspire "Mad Men," it did lay the groundwork for Don Draper, as well as several other characters on the series. The pieces of the script we saw formed Don's flashback to the Korean War in the season one episode "Nixon vs. Kennedy."

In the script pages below, a character named Peter is brought to the hospital after he survives an explosion which kills his lieutenant, Dick. Peter eventually steals his lieutenant's identity.

The "Peter" mentioned eventually became Don Draper on "Mad Men."

In the show, Dick Whitman (Jon Hamm) steals Lieutenant Don Draper's (Troy Ruptash) identity. The page below from Weiner's "Horseshoe" script describes Dick's death.

From the script:

Dick strikes a match against his shoe.

The spark of the match sets off the gas from the latrine. The whole thing EXPLODES into a million pieces.

EXT. CAMP  —  LATER

Peter lies on his face bleeding badly. He groggily tries to stand but falls back again with his face in the mud.

He looks over to Dick. Dick is dead -- his body cut in half by a wooden toilet seat.

Peter crawls to him. He touches his neck for a pulse. There is nothing. His fingers catch under Dick's gold cross.

Summoning all his strength, Peter undoes Dick's dog tags and cross and replaces them with his own.

Exhausted, he drops his face back into the dirt. He closes his eyes, unconscious.

Mad Men The Horseshoe ScriptThis is the exact same way Donald Draper met his fate during the "Nixon vs. Kennedy" flashback.

Dick Whitman Mad MenMad MenThe pages below later became the scene in which "Dick's" body is delivered to his family, when, in actuality, it's Donald Draper's body in the coffin.

Dick (Hamm), who has now taken the identity of his lieutenant, sneaks away on a train.

The Horseshoe Mad MenJust like on "Mad Men," Dick's younger brother Adam (also named Adam in "The Horseshoe"), spots his real brother on the train, though nobody believed him at the time.

Mad Men Dick WhitmanGoing through some of the script pages, "Mad Men" fans will notice some of the names in "The Horseshoe" also look familiar.

The Horseshoe Mad MenWeiner later used the name Peggy for the character of Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss). Meanwhile, Peter became Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser).

On "Mad Men," Peggy and Pete are two of the younger members of Sterling Cooper. In season one, Pete and Peggy have an affair. In "The Horseshoe," Peggy is the name of Peter's mother.

Mad Men Pete Peggy

Also interesting among the notes and scribblings which accompany "The Horseshoe" is this index card:

Mad Men Ossining Note

The card reads: "Ossining- Comes off train; Solder gets out of the way to reveal him in Business suit + Hat. Wife + Boy + Girl."

The first and last scenes of "The Horseshoe" were supposed to be set in Ossining, New York, which eventually became the setting for the Draper family home. Unfortunately, this page was not on display, and was possibly never written.

However, the show's first episode, entitled "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," ends with Don getting off a train from New York City to Ossining where it's revealed the adulterous Draper is actually a family man.

According to Metro UK, Mac had been standing in on the show's fifth season. Currently 18 years old, Mac moved to Marbella, Spain, when she was 10 years old.

Although some reports refer to Mac as a stand-in and double for Clarke, an HBO representative told Business Insider that she was only a stand-in.

What's the difference? A stand-in is typically used to set cameras and lighting while the actor is away, while a double is used on camera for stunts, sex scenes, and other scenes actors are unable to do or won't do.

An individual close to the show told Business Insider that producers may have discussed an extra role for Mac, but it never came to be.

HBO's 'Silicon Valley' took a page from Mark Cuban's story about being naked and becoming a billionaire

Fans have just assumed that HBO's "Silicon Valley" based its raunchy venture capitalist Russell Hanneman on Mark Cuban, but Sunday's episode pretty much answers the question.

In a scene with the guys of Pied Piper, Russ (Chris Diamantopoulos) says that he has been informed that his net worth had fallen below a billion dollars. The news sent him into a tailspin and he asked the guys to prematurely jump to a revenue-producing model of Pied Piper.

During that conversation, he describes the moment he became a billionaire.

"I remember the second I became a billionaire," Russ said. "I was a-- naked, sitting right there, just clicking and refreshing, clicking and refreshing, watching the stock rise. And when it happened, I popped a [expletive] so fast I went blind for a full minute, [expletive] all over those cushions."

Sound familiar?

Cuban told a very similar story (minus the raunchy, expletive part) in August 2014 during a podcast interview.

"Literally, I was sitting in front of a computer, naked, hitting the refresh because we were close — waiting until my net worth hit that billion when the stock price got to a certain point, and then I kinda screamed and jumped around and then got dressed," the "Shark Tank" co-host said.

mark cubanWhen asked about the scene, Cuban simply told Business Insider, "Russ is hysterical. I cracked up when I saw it."

So, Russell and Cuban are both colorful characters. They both brought radio to the internet in billion dollar deals. They both have invested in several companies. And now, both of them watched their money grow to the billion dollar level. Those are some pretty compelling similarities.

intro Mad Men 7 1

Currently in its seventh and final season, "Mad Men" will soon say goodbye after eight years on the air.

When that time comes, the show's creator and writer, Matthew Weiner, says, "I'm pretty sure I'm going to be sad."

Matthew Weiner Jon HammThe 49-year-old spoke to Business Insider at the Time 100 gala, where he explained that in the meantime, he's just trying to live in the moment.

"I'm doing something I don't usually do, I'm trying to really savor these current experiences and the love that I'm getting from people about the show," says Weiner. "I'm hearing things that I always wanted to hear, people telling me what the show means to them, people worried about how I'm doing. I'm just a writer, and I love that this meant something to people."

With a cast and crew that have become like family over the years, Weiner says, "We have all sworn to stay in touch, I'll tell you that."

When it comes time for the final episode, Weiner says, "I think we'll all watch the end of the show together."

Matthew Weiner kiernan shipka mad men janurary jonesBut Weiner usually prefers to watch the show on Sunday nights with a smaller crowd.

"I do like to watch it," Weiner says of his hit AMC show. "I watch it with my family, and we're going to have some viewing parties. But I'm not fun to watch it with. I'm totally intolerant of any conversation."

While Weiner says that the show "does look different when when you see it with other people," he never has any regrets because "I had the chance to do whatever I wanted to do" during filming.

But to this day, Weiner says, "I get anxious on Sundays. For me, it's like a performance."

"It's such a pleasure," Weiner adds of his experience on the show. "Do you know how weird it is to see your name on TV? I haven't gotten over that yet, believe it or not."

David Duchovny says new 'X-Files' script brought him to tears

David Duchovny

David Duchovny cried tears of joy over the first script of Fox's upcoming revival of "The X-Files."

“I just read it about an hour ago and I started crying reading the first page," the actor told EW.

He explained, "It was just so strange to see the names on the page. It had nothing to do with the script itself. It was just like, I’d been talking about this for a long time. We’d been planning it for a long time. It took a long time to get all the people in the same place and get the deal with Fox. So let’s say two years we’ve been talking about doing it. Now it’s the fun part. Now we actually get to do it. That was nice and strangely emotional for me, and I’ll have to figure out how to use that [in the performance]."

Although story lines are being held very secret, Duchovny did say the first script is "fantastic."

Starting production in June, "The X-Files" revival has creator and writer Chris Carter back at the helm. Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reunite in the roles of FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, respectively.

Duchovny also confirmed what Fox co-head Dana Walden told reporters earlier this month about the mix of standalone and mythology episodes for the revival.

“Even though there’s only six [episodes], there will be a mix,” he said. “It’s not really 'The X-Files' without the mythology.”

The actor says the series doesn't end with the upcoming season. In fact, he would be down for another.

X Files I want to believe“I would be open to doing another cycle,” Duchovny said. “I don’t know that I could do a 20-episode version of this show at this point in my life, and I don’t know that Gillian could. But I think everybody is open ended on what happens after this. Certainly, we didn’t bring it back with the idea of ending it.”

"The X-Files returns to Fox with a two-night event starting Sunday, Jan. 24 at 10 p.m. following the NFC Championship Game and then continues on Monday, Jan. 25 at 10 p.m. After that, it will air on Mondays for the duration of the season.

Meanwhile, Duchovny can be seen on NBC's "Aquarius," which premieres Thursday at 9 p.m. on NBC. Also, in a first for a broadcast network, the entire season will be released in its entirety on On Demand, NBC.com and other participating sites.

This 'Game of Thrones' chart paints a disappointing picture for the show so far this season

Season five of "Game of Thrones" started with a record-breaking 8 million viewers when it premiered in April. Since then, the numbers for this season have been dropping steadily.

After the premiere, episode two dropped nearly 1.2 million viewers. By episode six, the total number tuning in was down to 6.2 million. This past weekend's episode seven, which, granted, fell on Memorial Day weekend, dropped even more significantly to 5.4 million viewers.

game of thrones season 5 episode ratings

While it's not unusual for a season to dip after the premiere before trending back upward toward the finale, the HBO series has had a pretty solid track record across each season.

The pattern for past seasons usually goes something like this: Solid premiere viewings followed by a slow but steady gain of momentum through to the finale. Historically, the finale episodes of each season have beaten the premiere for total number of viewers.

So far, season five is failing to meet these marks.

Here's a look at viewership for every episode by season from Nielsen rating side by side. Season five is in red.

game of thrones ratings updatedWhy is viewership on the decline this season?

There are a lot of factors to consider. Look at the sharp decline in viewership over the past episode.

game of thrones ratings season 5

As we noted, it was a holiday weekend; however, episode six of the current season also received a lot of heavy backlash after a storyline saw a popular character get sexually assaulted by her new husband on their wedding night. This has become a common occurrence in the series, and, in response, there has been a huge outcry from fans.

It even prompted a senator to publicly announce she is no longer watching "Game of Thrones" due to the 'gratuitous' rape. The storyline has been one of many divergences that have upset fans over the course of the season.

It's also worth noting the first four episodes of the new season were leaked just days before its April premiere. (However, leaks have always been a problem with "Game of Thrones." The series is only the most pirated show on television year after year.)

In addition to HBO GO, the network also launched its new standalone streaming service, HBO Now. The network recently offered new customers to 30 days free when they signed up.

HBO confirms to Business Insider that it is seeing a rise in its streaming services for season five, but the network does not release numbers for individual platforms.

MTV2 and Logo TV Chief reveals how he rejuvenated the channels in 3 steps

$

McCarthy_Chris logo mtv2

What does it take to cut through the hundreds of cable channels available today?

Viacom executive Chris McCarthy was faced with answering those questions when it came to reinvigorating a young, male audience for MTV2 as it neared its 20th anniversary and revitalizing gay trailblazer Logo TV after nearly a decade on-air.

"While the brands seem very, very different, and they are, from a brand perspective — one is young guys, and the other one is gays and gay culture," McCarthy — MTV2, MTVu, and Logo TV's general manager — told Business Insider. "From a business perspective, they share a lot in common, more than most people would probably think."

And the results are pretty impressive. Only three cable networks have actually increased their audience over the past eight quarters. MTV2 and Logo are two of them. This quarter alone MTV2 is pacing toward another year of growth after earning its highest ratings ever over 2014. Meanwhile, Logo is currently experiencing its highest ratings ever, after already achieving a 50% increase over the past six quarters.

McCarthy credits those accomplishments to some relatively simple (and sort of iconoclastic) changes in the way those cable channels do business.

1.) Act like a start-up.

secret guide to fabulous
"One is just the culture. We operate both of the brands like a start-up rather than a legacy cable model," McCarthy said. "So, we break the rules. We don’t have any traditional greenlight process. It’s anywhere from 30 days to three months from concept to air."

The new startup mindset has allowed the networks to become more experimental. They can cut down the six to nine-month process to get a pilot to screen by just releasing the pilot as a special, or as a short test season. They get quicker audience feedback, can decide what changes to make if they move on to another season or just let the special or pilot season stand as it is with no renewal.

"It actually allows us to be quicker, faster, doubling down on things that are working, and quickly move past things that aren’t," McCarthy explained. "It’s that start-up mentality where we sail fast, we sail forward."

For example, Logo's makeover show "Secret Guide to Fabulous" (which is produced by Kelly Ripa and husband Mark Consuelos) premiered as a six-episode pilot season. After that run, the creative team "tinkered with it" and will bring it back this summer for another season.

2.) Decentralize the creative process.

wild n out
"The second thing is our creative and our talent, and that’s both on and off the screen," the GM said. "So from our interns to our talent on-air, everyone pitches ideas, and everybody makes them and actually gets to market them. Both groups are structured very horizontally, and it’s a little bit like a creative collective."

This is one of the reasons Nick Cannon approached MTV2 with bringing back his hip-hop improv series "Wild N' Out" with a few changes.

"He did that, because he knows we’ll give him the creative freedom to create the show in the way that he wants to," McCarthy pointed out.

But, the the system doesn't just work for those with already established names. "We take pitches from production companies, but oftentimes, most of our content is developed internally," McCarthy said.

3.) Double-down on creating content for your core audience.

"The third piece is we’ve created demand, and I think this really applies for any industry," McCarthy described, "If you think about the actual content space as a whole, the world has enough content, and had enough content. But what we were able to do with these brands is create an audience demand by taking sort of an audience desire and tapping into it."

Since McCarthy took charge of MTV2 in 2009, networks were abandoning the young male audience. NBCUniversal shuttered G4, Comedy Central and Spike TV went broader and Esquire targeted an older male demographic.

"People had sort of felt like young guys are too hard to get, go after," McCarthy, who has used comedy to attract young male viewers to MTV2, recalled. "And instead we said, 'No, we’re going to develop specifically for them,' and we brought them back to television."

Logo had a different problem that called for a similar solution. Gay rights, specifically marriage rights, gained support in the U.S. TV had begun to increase the amount of gay characters on shows. Many wondered if there's even a need for a channel geared toward gay viewers anymore.

"We said, 'No, it’s the reverse.' We double down on it, and the results are showing, we’re up almost 50 percent," McCarthy said. "No one’s telling a 360 degree angle on that character. We’re telling every side of the character, and it’s not just checking off a box, having a gay character. Our characters and our stories are centered around that."

Logo has moved into scripted programming with "Cucumber" and "Banana," two interlocking series created by "Doctor Who" producer and "Queer as Folk" creator Russel T. Davies, which earned the network's highest ratings for a new series (with the help of a lead-in from "RuPaul's Drag Race").

Logo has also created a documentary division that launched with "Orange Is the New Black" star's "Laverne Cox Presents the T-Word." The channel's deep dive into gay culture included its "Trailblazers" special, a rare celebration of LGBT heroes, and "Cocktails and Classics," which takes an inside look at movies that have become gay cult classics like "Valley of the Dolls,""Auntie Mame," and "Steel Magnolias."

"With gay characters happening all over television, there was really an opportunity to re-position the network back to being the home of gays," he said.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak says the best Steve Jobs film is this 1999 made-for-TV movie

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is one of the few people who intimately knew Steve Jobs and Apple's journey to becoming the leader in personal computing devices.

So, Wozniak clearly has his take on whether Hollywood has gotten it right when it comes to how the 2013 feature film "Jobs" portrayed his late friend and business partner.

"I think that there were a lot of weaknesses about the 'Jobs' movie, the one with Ashton Kutcher, a lot of weaknesses from the screen writing and all, but I gave it a chance. I was hoping it would be a great movie," Wozniak said on a press call Wednesday for National Geographic Channel's upcoming episode of documentary series "American Genius" titled "Jobs vs. Gates."

He continued, "['Jobs'] didn’t get into the inner thinking of Steve Jobs, which the movie was about Steve Jobs."

Wozniak didn't believe the movie went deep enough into the character of Jobs' biggest rival, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, either.

"That one wasn’t about Bill Gates, but it didn’t get into how he worked inside and how he actually negotiated and worked on people and portrayed his ideas through," Wozniak explained. "It kind of shortened everything. It sort of had the outside Steve Jobs, the frill, the façade and done very well, but I wanted more. I want to really know what is behind this thinking that goes a step further than other people."

pirates of silicon valley tntBut Wozniak said that he doesn't feel it's impossible for Hollywood dramatizations to get it right.

In fact, he pointed to TNT's 1999 original TV movie, "Pirates of Silicon Valley," which starred Noah Wyle and Anthony Michael Hall as Jobs and Gates, respectively, as a good example.

"I absolutely feel that it can be captured and has been captured in drama style," he said. "One of the things is, yes, it not only captures inside of Steve Jobs. It’s the events that occurred and what was their meaning in the development of computers and 'Pirates of Silicon Valley' was intriguing, interesting. I loved watching it."

Nominated for five Emmy awards in 1999, "Pirates" portrayed Jobs and Gates' lives from 1971-1997. It followed the duo from their formative college years to how their rivalry would impact and fuel the race to create the best personal computer and then to their alliance in 1997.

Watch the trailer below:

"Every one of those incidences occurred and it occurred with the meaning that was shown in that TV movie, 'Pirates of Silicon Valley,'" adds Wozniak. "In the 'Jobs' movie, it was just like, I don’t know, I felt like I’d eaten a big meal and I was still hungry. Somehow, I had not gotten what I tuned in for."

Although he has yet to watch Nat Geo's "American Genius: Jobs vs. Gates," Wozniak has high hopes.

"I think that this show will do a lot better at it," the 64-year-old inventor said. "I don’t know if you can compare a National Geographic presentation to a feature movie, but I’m as anxious as anyone else to see it. I’m thinking that this one is going to turn out a lot better because first of all, you’re starting out with National Geographic and a lot of credibility and things on the line they can’t risk by trying to be overly dramatic or just take aside. I think it’s more searching for the truth when it comes from National Geographic."

"American Genius: Jobs vs. Gates" premieres Monday, June 1 at 9 p.m. on National Geographic Channel.

Steve Wozniak says these two TV shows are the most realistic about the tech world

Steve WozniakIn a press call for National Geographic's upcoming documentary series "American Genius," Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak took time to give glowing reviews to two TV shows about the tech world — HBO's "Silicon Valley" and AMC's "Halt and Catch Fire."

Wozniak found the comedic portrayal of start-up culture in "Silicon Valley" to be both amusing and realistic to his own experiences.

"Silicon Valley, I watched the entire first season," he said. "It fit into this thing where when we started Apple there were companies that would spin-off."

Wozniak continued:

"Then along came groups like Bill Gates and Microsoft and Steve Jobs and myself and Apple and a lot of young, young people; Mark Zuckerberg working in a dorm, creating these great companies. So, it became very enamored by people and wanting to be an entrepreneur, wanting to know the formula. How can I someday be part of a startup, one of the most exciting in life for people of that university-type age? So, those TV shows definitely would find a [audience], either have an interest, a spark, a point that could grab an audience."

silicon valley hboIn response to a reporter's question about "Halt and Catch Fire," AMC's period drama about the Silicon Prairie of Texas in 1983, Wozniak reacted even more positively:

"'Halt and Catch Fire,' too. Wow, I love the portrayal, but it's more like a lot of the drama."

Halt and Catch Fire, AMC"American Genius" premieres on the National Geographic Channel on June 1 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

The first episode, "Jobs vs. Gates," will detail the battle between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates to bring the personal computer to the masses in the 1980s and feature commentary from Wozniak, Twitter co-founder and entrepreneur Biz Stone, politician and businessman Mitt Romney, and others.

Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak explains the biggest difference between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates

While Hollywood has tried to get the story of the rivalry between Apple visionary Steve Jobs and Microsoft trailblazer Bill Gates right, Steve Wozniak had a front-row seat as it went down in real time.

Wozniak was the cofounder and technical genius behind Apple. In that role, he was the man who brought Jobs' visions to life. Over the years, he would get to know both Jobs and Gates very well as Apple and Microsoft weaved in and out of being competitors and partners.

During a press call on Wednesday for National Geographic Channel's "American Genius," Wozniak explained the main difference between Jobs and Gates.

He said Jobs had "a very futuristic forward vision, almost a bit of the science fiction, 'Here’s what life could be,' but Bill Gates had more of an execution ability to build the things that are needed now, to build a company now, make the profits now, in the short-term.

"I think that was the biggest difference between them," he said.

steve wozniak american geniusWozniak said that while the late Jobs may now be the more celebrated figure in the story of the rise of personal computers, Gates was the one who really understood how to make money.

"You really need the vision like Steve Jobs had, but the vision doesn't go anywhere if you try to jump in and build products before they are cost effective for what they do, return on investment is there," he said.

Wozniak added: "It was during the time of the Macintosh that the world market grew 10 times and Apple did not go up with it."

"American Genius: Jobs vs. Gates" premieres Monday, June 1, at 9 p.m. on National Geographic Channel.

HBO's 'Silicon Valley' took a page from Mark Cuban's story about being naked and becoming a billionaire

mark cuban silicon valley russ hanneman

How Stephen Colbert ended up on season 3 of 'House of Cards'

Colbert on house of cardsThere are some minor spoilers ahead for "House of Cards" season 3.

One of the biggest surprises of the season 3 premiere of "House of Cards," which debuted on Netflix back in February, was an appearance by Stephen Colbert reprising his role of "The Colbert Report" host.

Comedy Central had previously aired the final episode of Colbert's talk show in December 2014, so it was a big shock to see him back as host one last time while grilling Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) over a controversial jobs' program.

During a talk at Vulture's second annual pop culture event Vulture Festival late Sunday afternoon, Vulture editor Gazelle Emami asked "House of Cards" showrunner Beau Willimon if the dialogue from Colbert on air was scripted.

Willimon went into great detail telling the audience how the Colbert cameo came about and was filmed.

"I fully expected Stephen to say no. And, Stephen said yes, and I said, 'Look, you're going to be way funnier than anything I can write," said Willimon. "I will send you a sort of sample script of what the shape of the scene is going to look like."

Willimon said he sent Colbert over about four pages of the scene along with material on Underwood's fictional jobs' program, America Works, and more.

"I thought, if you guys can ad-lib then I don't care ... that'll be way more authentic than if we just script everything," Willimon continued.

Willimon said he later got on the phone with Colbert and his people who told him he thought they should use most of the script. He couldn't believe it. He said everyone reassured him there were some good jokes in the script.

"I'm going to change a few [jokes] if that's okay with you," Willimon recalled Colbert asking.

The "House of Cards" showrunner was more than okay with that request. "Please! Please change whatever you want."

beau willimon house of cardsWillimon told the crowd they ended up filming the scene between Kevin Spacey and Colbert at the actual Colbert set in front of a live audience.

"We said to them, 'All right, none of you can say anything.' We didn't tell them it was for the show. We said, 'We're going to do a couple of bits ... None of you don't ever tweet about this or talk about this at all," he explained. "Miraculously, none of the audience did for months and months."

One of the bits that was taped ended up being shot for "The Colbert Report." Willimon says the "House of Cards" team had nothing to do with it though. Willimon said what we ended up seeing in the season three premiere was part of an eight-minute set that was filmed using the Comedy Central show's cameras and crew.

"There's a mixture of script and improv," said Willimon. "A lot of the things that Stephen said that were used were things that we kind of co-did together. The line about the lampreys sucking a crouton ... that was all him."

orange is the new black

June is fast approaching, so that means there will be a slew of new movies and TV shows heading to Netflix.

This coming month brings the return of "Orange is the New Black" as well as "Sense8," Netflix's latest foray into original programming.

Meanwhile, if you ever wanted to see what a Shaquille O'Neal all star comedy jam looks like, Netflix will offer a few of those as well.

Check out everything coming to Netflix in June.

Here's what you should check out on Netflix in June:

TV

marvel's agents of s.h.i.e.l.d. shield

The second season of Marvel's first attempt at extending its ambitious cinematic universe to the small screen will be available on Netflix.

"Orange is the New Black" (available 6/12)

The critically-acclaimed series that put Netflix original programming on the map returns for its third season. After a stellar second season, and an unforgettable cliffhanger, things are looking up for the new season.

Now you will finally get a chance to catch up on one of the best films of 2014, which features Jake Gyllenhaal as a wildly ambitious but morally twisted man trying to break into L.A. crime journalism. Unfortunately, Gyllenhaal was not nominated for an Oscar for what is, by far, the best performance of his career.

"Rosewater" (available 6/10)

Jon Stewart took off "Daily Show" hosting duty during the summer of 2013 to shoot this drama about a journalist (Gael Garcia Bernal) who is thrown into an Iranian prison after participating in a "Daily Show" bit. This is a great way to kick off Stewart's last few months as host; his last show will air on August 6.
