sandra bullock jennifer aniston chelsea handlerJennifer Aniston, Sandra Bullock, and Mary McCormack all appeared on Chelsea Handler's final "Chelsea Lately" episode Tuesday night on E! to bid adieu to their late-night host friend.

But it wasn't just a goodbye after seven years on the air, it was also an intervention.

McCormack, an actress and Handler's BFF, started by joking about that the comedian's move to Netflix is code for rehab:

"I urge you to get help. So if you have to tell the world that you're 'going to Netflix' for a little while, I think everyone supports you and everyone will understand. Netflix is a wonderful facility where you will be able to get all the help you need. So, if you want, Jen, Sandy, and I have arranged a plane to take you to Netflix as soon as the show wraps tonight."

Jennifer Aniston followed up by exclaiming:

"Chelsea, you steal everything I do! I went to Cabo, you went to Cabo. I introduce you to my yoga teacher, you stole my yoga teacher! I got a knee injury, you got a knee injury. I cut my hair, you cut your hair."Jennifer Aniston chelsea lately

Then it was Sandra Bullock's turn for the friend intervention:

"After you made me clean out your office today, I came across some items that both horrified and made me concerned for your overall well being. I found these lesbian boots... just stop teasing the lesbian community and let them fly free. Another thing I found? Steroids! Chelsea, aren't you masculine enough?!"

'Jessica Jones' Is Next Marvel Netflix Series After 'Daredevil'

It's interesting that we've yet to hear any names in regards to the casting of Jessica Jones, a role that seems ripe for at least a few rumors or fan speculation. It may not be too long before we learn who is playing this superhero, as Netflix plans to make Jessica Jones it's next Marvel series after Daredevil.

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos revealed that Jessica Jones is starting to heat up as Daredevil continues shooting on location in New York.

While he reveals that casting is underway on the next Marvel Netflix Series, he doesn't say much else, as he is always under the watchful eye of Marvel Studios:

"Right now, the writers' rooms are open and they're looking at casting Jessica. If you sense some hesitation in my voice, that's classic Marvel fashion. They like to keep that veil of secrecy. But Daredevil is already shooting, since that's out first. Eventually the series will run very close together. You can then have a separate season where the characters will cross over."

The plan is for all four Marvel Netflix series, which includes DaredevilJessica JonesIron Fist and Luke Cage, to eventually culminate in The Defenders miniseries.

While Guardians of the Galaxy presented a more colorful, fun comic book adventure on the big screen, don't look for the Marvel Netflix series to follow suite. While they do take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity, they will be a darker affair. Daredevil is setting the tone in the Hell's Kitchen district, and promises to be grittier than the movie based on the comic book.

"The series will not be afraid to go darker than the film did. What we love about this particular set of heroes is that they're a little more down to Earth. Costume wise and also in that these are gritty crime stories, more in the streets than in the clouds."

jessica jones marvelJessica Jones is a fairly new character in the Marvel comic book universe, having debuted in 2001. She once had a crush on Peter Parker, and was present when he was bitten by the radioactive spider that gave him his powers. Soon after that infamous incident, the high school girl was involved in a car accident that killed the rest of her family. The collision involved a military convoy carrying radioactive chemicals, and after spending several months in a coma, she awoke, later discovering that her radiation exposure gave her super strength, limited invulnerability, and flight (which she never fully mastered during her superhero career).

While her origins are closely tied with Spider-Man, it's unlikely that Peter Parker will be mentioned by name in the series. It is not known what age she will be portrayed as in the TV show, with her look changing throughout the comic books. Jessica Jones is also married to Luke Cage in the comic books, but its not known if The Defenders will go down this road.

Who do you want to see as Jessica Jones on the small screen? Should she be played by a new comer?

Why 'Modern Family' Keeps Winning Emmys Over Better Shows

$
0

modern family emmys ABC's "Modern Family" won its fifth-consecutive Emmy for Best Comedy Series on Monday night, joining "Frasier" (1994-1998) as the only comedy to win so many in a row.

But does the show really deserve its status as a five-time Best Comedy Series champ?

"Modern Family" wasn't even on the radar for most critics guessing Emmy winners, as FX's "Louie" and controversial Netflix comedy entry "Orange is the New Black" (it's a drama, right?) were expected to take top honors.

But after Netflix made history last year by being the first non-TV network to win an award (three awards, to be exact), perhaps Emmy voters got scared that streaming sites would take their viewers and their accolades. Even Seth Meyers poked fun at Netflix's dominance in his opening monologue of the night.

Perhaps voters also preferred to stick with a network selection over cable competition, which also included HBO's "Silicon Valley" and "Veep."

Emmy voters are members of The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, who have applied and been approved by a "peer group." Those accepted include actors, casting directors, producers, directors, and tons of behind-the-scenes people who have been in the 'biz for a very long time and likely want to see network television prevail.

Emmy voters quickly recognized "Modern Family" as a safe choice.

When the show first premiered in 2009, it quickly had mass appeal. Combining three family units including a gay couple with an adopted daughter, an older man with a hot Colombian wife, and a traditional suburban family — it was like "8 Simple Rules" meets "Three's Company" mixed with some "George Lopez."

modern family promo poster season oneAfter two seasons, the show had a combination of 33 Emmy nods and 11 wins.

By 2012, it was so popular that NBC tried — and failed — to duplicate its success with look-alike show "The New Normal."

But already the "Modern" characters were starting to feel stale to some critics.

"As 'Modern Family' has gotten older, its characters, and their dynamics, have settled into grooves, some more discordant than others," Salon's Willa Paskin wrote in 2012.

Meanwhile, where storylines in older episodes would tie together brilliantly, some new episodes feature disappointingly unconnected plot lines. They also feel increasingly formulaic.

That's why the latest Emmy win generated tweets like this (from Buzzfeed's entertainment editor and a filmmaker):

The viewership for the series, while still high, isn't as large as it once was. The ratings for "Modern Family" by its season average nearly make a bell curve.

modern family ratings by season average

A look at fan reception of every episode to date shows a gradual decline in viewer interest. The series hits a low note near the end of season 4.

Via Graph TV:

modern family audience receptionmodern family reviews

Despite the recent slump, the series' most positively reviewed episode actually came this past season when the family took a trip to Las Vegas. Taking the family out of their normal setting invigorated the episode, and all the storylines come together for a more satisfying end that was reminiscent of the show's earlier seasons.

That's probably why the episode won an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. "Las Vegas" and the positive reception of one other stand-out episode from season 5 titled "Message Received" may have helped Emmy voters give it a win.

This is not the only time the Emmy's has awarded a show that's past its prime.

Just look at how long "Two and a Half Men" kept winning Emmys after its prime. While fan ratings and TV ratings plunged after Charlie Sheen left in season 9, that didn't stop the show from receiving 14 more Emmys nominations, with co-star Jon Cryer receiving four more nominations and securing two wins.

More often than not, when it comes to comedies, the Emmys play it safe giving the awards to a network TV show over cable. Since the Emmys' inception there has only been one time a cable channel has won the Outstanding Comedy series. That honor is held by HBO, as "Sex and the City" won Best Comedy in 2001.

Even if the Emmys are playing favorites with "Modern Family," the ABC show is not as popular as it once was with the Awards' show. The amount of Emmy nominations the series has received and won over the years has slowly been on the decline.

Amazon Is Taking A Page From Netflix’s Book

jeffrey tambor transparent

Amazon Prime is taking a page from competitor Netflix.

The video service will debut all 10 episodes of new drama series "Transparent" on September 26.

Netflix's model for debuting new shows like "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black" has always been to release all episodes of a new season at once to allow fans to binge-watch. While the idea seemed unorthodox at first, it's a model that has proved successful as both series have been nominated for — and subsequently won— Primetime Emmys.

"Transparent" follows Jeffrey Tambor ("Arrested Development") as he reintroduces himself as a woman to his family. The show is written and directed by Jill Soloway (producer and writer of "Six Feet Under") and also stars Judith Light ("Dallas") and Gaby Hoffmann ("Girls").

In the past, Amazon has introduced new series through a pilot season where the first episode of a new show debuts on Amazon Prime Instant Video. The show’s future is determined by viewer feedback.

Amazon hasn’t tossed away this format. Starting Thursday, the service introduced pilot episodes for five new comedies and dramas on its site including "The Cosmopolitans,""Really,""Red Oaks," and hour-long dramas "Hand of God" and "Hysteria."

When we asked a spokesperson why Amazon is taking a different approach with the release of "Transparent," we were told Amazon is "experimenting with different release models for their shows."

The first episode is available now to watch on Prime.

Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, And Lisa Kudrow Reunite To Read A New 'Friends' Script On Jimmy Kimmel

Friends

The hit sitcom "Friends" has been off the air for over 10 years now, but lives on thanks to its many syndication deals with various network channels.

Jennifer Aniston, while on Jimmy Kimmel's late night show Wednesday night, showed up only to be told by Kimmel that he had prepared some "Friends fan fiction" for the two of them to read out loud.

Aniston told him she had no idea what he meant.

"Well like, say if it was "Star Wars" you'd write a script and then maybe work yourself into it, like in this case, I'm Ross," Kimmel explains.

He then leads her over to an exact replica of the set from the show:

Friends Jimmy Kimmel

They begin reading the lines and Aniston is fed up (though it all seems to be part of the shtick of course.)

She also refuses to wear "The Rachel" wig Kimmel offers her, a throwback to the iconic 90's hairstyle.

Jennifer Aniston

Then, surprise! Cox and Kudrow show up to read their lines.

Kimmel says in his script, "Joey and Chandler are dead." Aniston truly looks like she doesn't want to be there, but it's hilarious — and always fun — to experience a "Friends" throwback.

Then, the women sang-talked the lyrics to the "Friends" theme.

'Sopranos' Creator David Chase Backtracks, Tony Soprano May Be Dead After All

the sopranos hbo

Widely circulated reports that Tony Soprano may be alive after all, are not exactly true.

On Wednesday, Vox published a feature on the topic of whether or not the "Sopranos" protagonist is still alive after the HBO series' vague ending in 2007.

david chase sopranos

In Vox's article, writer Martha P. Nochimson recalled a conversation with series creator David Chase, in which she allegedly asked him, “Is Tony Soprano dead?”

“He shook his head ‘no.’ And he simply said, ‘No, he isn't,'” Nochimson wrote.

But now Chase's representative is denying the report, saying that her client's comments have been “misconstrued.”

“A journalist for Vox misconstrued what David Chase said in their interview. To simply quote David as saying, ‘Tony Soprano is not dead,’ is inaccurate. There is a much larger context for that statement and as such, it is not true. As David Chase has said numerous times on the record, ‘Whether Tony Soprano is alive or dead is not the point.’ To continue to search for this answer is fruitless. The final scene of ‘The Sopranos’ raises a spiritual question that has no right or wrong answer.”

In the Vox interview, Chase does reveal that the series' finale was inspired by the Edgar Allan Poe poem "A Dream Within a Dream," about struggling to say goodbye to a loved one as grains of sand pass through his fingers.

"What more can I say?" Chase asked.

This isn't the first time Chase has addressed the mysterious finale, which ends abruptly with Tony Soprano sitting in a café, looking up at the entrance to the sound of an ominous jingling bell.

During a Q&A at a "Sopranos" screening in April, Chase said the ending "was meant to make you feel, not to make you think."

Actor James Gandolfini, who played Tony Soprano, died last June.

Netflix Will Air NBC's ‘The Blacklist’ For $2 Million An Episode

james spader the blacklistEXCLUSIVE: In what is believed to be the biggest subscription video-on-demand deal for a TV series, I’ve learned that Netflix has acquired the rights to hit NBC drama The Blacklist from Sony Pictures TV in a deal that will net $2 million per episode. I hear Season 1 of the series starring James Spader will debut on the streaming service next weekend. As for future seasons, Netflix usually makes them available shortly after the season finales.

Sony TV first tested the off-network market waters for The Blacklist in March. While other streaming services, like Amazon and Hulu, do joint syndication deals with cable networks, Netflix, which largely pioneered the series SVOD business, insists on getting first dibs. Twentieth Television just recently sold New Girl to TBS and MTV, more than an year after prior seasons of the Fox series landed at Netflix in a rich deal, said to be worth $900,000 an episode. Like was the case with New Girl, I hear Sony TV has the right to also sell The Blacklist in cable and broadcast syndication, with Netflix getting an exclusive first window. The $2 million per-episode fee is said to be the biggest for an off-network series paid by Netflix (or any others streaming company), eclipsing previous record holder, AMC’s The Walking Dead, whose sale price to Netflix is believed to be $1.35 million per episode.

It is fitting that Sony TV is charting new territory in the broadcast space with the rich Blacklist deal. The studio was an early Netflix adopter, making one of the early series deals with the streaming service for its AMC drama Breaking Bad, which became one of the first Netflix mega hits and helped usher in the era of binge viewing. The Breaking Bad prequel comedy Better Call Saul also will stream on Netflix, and Sony TV also became one of the first major studios to produce an original series for the streaming service with KZK.

the blacklist

The Blacklist, in which NBC has minority ownership, is a successful, syndicatable broadcast procedural drama, which has been a rare breed during the past five years as the networks have gravitated toward more serialized fare. But it also features a serialized main storyline, making it attractive for streaming services like Netflix.(Blacklist also set a string of DVR records, and time shifted viewing is at the core of online streaming.)

The Blacklist is NBC’s flagship scripted series, which airs behind The Voice on Mondays and is poised to become the network’s new Thursday 9 PM anchor in midseason. In its freshman season, it averaged a 4.4 rating in adults 18-49 and 15.4 million total viewers in Live+7, only a fraction behind ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy in the broadcast drama rankings among 18-49 and network TV’s third-most-watched drama behind CBS’ NCIS and NCIS: LA.  Both Hawaii Five-0 and NCIS: LA fetched cable syndication license fees just north of $2 million. The Blacklist accomplished that with the Netflix deal. With cable and broadcast syndication pacts in the offing, it is expected to eclipse the $3 million per-episode total netted by CBS’ Elementary from SVOD (Hulu Plus), cable (WGN America) and broadcast syndication.

Network television may be bringing in younger talent from Jimmy Fallon to Seth Meyers to boost ratings; however, TV's highest-paid late-night host is Jon Stewart over on cable.

According to TV Guide's annual salary report, "The Daily Show" host makes anywhere from $25-$30 million per year for the Comedy Central show. In 2012, TV Guide reported his salary at $16 million.

That number blows network hosts out of the water. The average salary for the late-night hosts hovers around $10 million. The only one who comes close to Stewart's reported pay check is David Letterman at $20 million per year.

Netflix Knows What We Really Want, And It's An Alcoholic Talking Horse

$

BoJack Horseman

Given Netflix's incomparably vast data on viewer preferences, we assume the company knows what it's doing when it green-lights a cartoon featuring an alcoholic talking horse and multiple instances of bestiality.

"BoJack Horseman," debuted on Netflix streaming last week to some very positive and some very negative reviewsAlthough the company shares almost no data about viewership, it was apparently confident enough to renew the show for a second season.

The show, which takes place in a world in which animals are interchangeable with humans, tells the story of a talking horse, BoJack, who used to have a sitcom and now lives a pathetic life in Los Angeles.

Created by comedian Raphael Bob-Waksberg, "BoJack" brings together elements of various shows thought to be popular on Netflix. It stars Will Arnett, a favorite actor from "Arrested Development," which was so popular on streaming that Netflix produced an exclusive fourth season. It guest-stars Aaron Paul, whose "Breaking Bad" is notoriously popular among binge-watchers. As a wry cartoon for adults, the show is a successor to "Archer" and "Bob's Burgers."

It's not like the show was created in a secret Netflix laboratory — it was actually developed over a few years by Bob-Waksberg and animator Lisa Hanawalt — but Reed Hasting's company knew what it was doing when it bought the show in 2013.

Netflix, which is still primarily a subscription service for non-original video, tracks a wealth of data about its over 50 million users, including not only show popularity and ratings but also every click, pause, skip or closing of the windowSenior data scientist Mohammad Sabah has speculated that the company may begin to “consider things such as volume, colors, and scenery" in the future, reports Gigaom's Derrik Harris.

Netflix's recommendation algorithm, which tells users what to watch, is the most obvious use of this data, but the company has also acknowledged using it to inform its original content — and why wouldn't the company use this powerful tool?

House of CardsDavid Carr at the New York Times reported last year that Netflix drew from user data when considering "House of Cards," directed by David Fincher and starring Kevin Spacey, which would go on to be a major commercial and critical hit. Netflix "already knew that a healthy share had streamed the work of Mr. Fincher, the director of 'The Social Network,' from beginning to end. And films featuring Mr. Spacey had always done well, as had the British version of 'House of Cards,'" he wrote.

Netflix has an impressive hit rate when it comes to original content. Its 11 original shows and continuations received 45 Emmy nominations in the past two years, with massive critical acclaim for "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black," as well as success for "Lilyhammer,""Arrested Development,""Hemlock Grove," Derek," and others.

TV networks, working from relatively tiny market samples and old fashioned human intuition, are at a huge disadvantage. No wonder around 65% of new TV shows are canceled within a season.

Another advantage for Netflix is the ability to target niche audiences. Things as bizarre as "BoJack" or melancholy as "Derek" would never sustain a broad enough audience for network TV, but they work online where all interested viewers can find the content on their own time. The company has already proven that it can take shows that were considered failures via traditional TV models and breathe new life into them. The company revived Fox's critical darling "Arrested Development" and more recently AMC's fallen kidnapping drama "The Killing."

Other online media providers have adopted the same approach, such as when Yahoo picked up NBC's "Community."

netflix arrested developementIf that weren't enough, Netflix has also shown it's willing and able to spend lots of money to get good content.

"The cheapest show is $3.8 million an episode," CAA TV literary agent Peter Micelli said at a panel last year, as reported by Variety's Andrew Wallenstein. "House of Cards’ started at $4.5 million and Fincher took it way above that. The next series is ‘Hemlock Grove’ and they’re doing that for about $4 million an episode. 'Orange is the New Black’ is just under $4 million as well. They’re huge budgets shows, they’re doing things in a huge way."

Kevin Spacey reportedly makes over $500,000 per episode on "House of Cards," while talk show host Chelsea Handler will make a whopping $1o million for her upcoming Netflix show.

Although Netflix did not win any major Emmys this year, the network has been brazenly touting itself as the entertainment of today— and that claim is getting stronger every year.

Netflix stock is up around 790% in the past two years, with profits jumping to $71 million in the second quarter of 2014 compared to $30 million the year before.

Piers Morgan

After over two years as host of "Piers Morgan Live" on CNN, Piers Morgan has officially left the building.

“I was offered a new 2-year deal by CNN boss Jeff Zucker to host 40 big interview ‘specials,'” Morgan revealed to his 4.3 million Twitter followers on Tuesday. “But after considerable thought, I decided not to accept it – and to try pastures new.”

Jeff Zucker

Morgan began anchoring the network’s 9 p.m. slot in January of 2011, replacing “Larry King Live."

In February, rumors began swirling that Morgan's time at the news network was coming to a close after the show's plummeting ratings and Chelsea Handler called him a "terrible interviewer."

CNN anchors were subsequently fighting "Hunger Games"-style for his time slot.

Today, the 49-year-old announced what has been months in the making:

Morgan was formerly editor of Britain’s “News of the World” and “Daily Mirror” and also a judge on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.”

He has not yet announced his next move.

New 'Walking Dead' Poster Hints At A Very Grim Season 5 Story Line

the walking dead season 5 art

Warning: There are spoilers ahead if you do not read "The Walking Dead" comic.

AMC released the first poster for "The Walking Dead" season 5 Tuesday and it looks like we finally have confirmation on where the new season will be heading.

First, let's take a look at the poster.

It shows Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) out of the railroad car he was left in at the end of season 4 (we knew that couldn't keep him locked up for long) and ready to go on the attack.

the walking dead season 5

If you don't read the comics, you probably don't want to read anymore.

What's telling here are the words, "Hunt or be Hunted," offering up a HUGE hint at what's in store in the new season.

One of the most popular story lines from the comics which occurs pretty early on is called, "Fear the Hunters."the walking dead fear the hunters

The five-part comic follows a group of survivors, aptly named "the hunters," who have turned to cannibalism. (With resources running low in the aftermath of the apocalypse you have to imagine someone has resorted to hunting the undead.)

Ever since the introduction of Terminus, a supposed safe haven for survivors, popped up in season 4 of the series, fans have been quick to speculate that this place is merely a trap for Rick and his crew and that the Terminus clan are actually a version of the comic's hunters.

terminus the walking dead season 4

This wouldn't be a surprise since cannibalism has touched upon in every realm of "The Walking Dead" except for the TV series. A version of the hunter family also appears in season one of "The Walking Dead"video game by Telltale Games.

"The Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman recently told Entertainment Weekly that season 5 will follow a story line from the comics very closely.

"There's a very popular, familiar story line in the comic books that happened immediately following the exodus of the prison, and it is entirely possible that we will be touching in some way on that very popular story line," said Kirkman.

That Hunter storyline is the only big glaring omission from the comics so far the series has skipped over.

If you've been watching the show closely, there have been a few hints that the group who has taken Rick and his gang hostage are feasting on more than woodland critters.

At the end of season 4, we see Rick, Michonne, and the gang running through Terminus.  In that time, they pass through that creepy candlelight vigil to the deceased. Could it be to those who have given their lives at Terminus?

daryl terminus the walking dead

In one of the newest teasers for the show's return, we see what looks like a person strapped to a table while another man hovers above him doing ... something. It doesn't look pretty.

the walking dead season 5 torture

The most telling hint though may come from an image AMC released at the end of season four and since is nowhere to be found on the network's press site. Here we see Rick and Michonne going up against chained zombies while walking through what look like piles of human remains at Terminus. We first mentioned this image when showing off some behind-the-scenes images to close out the season.

the walking dead bones

Kirkman has reiterated to EW that the majority of viewers' questions will be answered by minute two or three of the season premiere. Of course, it will also open up a series of further questions to ponder.

Ceelo Green's Reality Show Canceled After No Contest Plea, Rape Tweets

TBS has canceled Ceelo Green‘s reality series “The Good Life” after a disastrous weekend that began with him pleading no contest to a felony charge of giving a woman the drug ecstasy and continued with a series of tweets about rape.

A network source said the show was done in by low ratings. But Green's activities since Friday couldn't have helped. After entering the plea, Green apparently went on a Twitter tirade in which he opined that “People who have really been raped REMEMBER!!!”

He was immediately blasted by many who pointed out that date-rape victims who have been drugged by their assailants often cannot remember, and that it is often the intent of rapists who drug their victims to prevent them from remembering.

A series of eventually deleted tweets on Green's feed argued that he did not rape the woman to whom he had furnished ecstasy, and offered a confusing argument about whether an unconscious person could give consent.

TheWrap has made numerous attempts to determine for certain whether Green sent the tweets from his account. His publicist has not responded to repeated requests for comment.

Green pled no contest Friday to a count accusing him of furnishing the drug during a 2012 dinner in Los Angeles. He also entered a special plea in which he maintained his innocence in the case and that prevents his no contest plea from being used against him in civil court, the Associated Press reported.

Green, whose real name is Thomas DeCarlo Callaway, was sentenced to three years of formal probation and 45 days of community service.

'Arrested Development' Wants You To Design Their Season 4 DVD Cover

arrested development season 4It wouldn’t be a story about Arrested Development if it didn’t have a problem involved. Fans of the cult series and physical media have been waiting well over a year for a DVD version of the Netflix-produced Season 4, which was originally supposed to have come out in June. There’s still no guaranteed release date set, but now 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and show creator Mitch Hurwitz are asking for everyone’s help in designing the Season 4 DVD set. It’s Art Tested for Relevance. Cue the ukulele.

The contest is being hosted at the Arrested Fan Art Tumblr page, and they're accepting submissions for what fans think the signature look of Season 4 should be, with all entries needing to be turned in by September 16. The winner will receive $1,000 and bragging rights that Mitch Hurwitz thinks his or her art is worth stealing. (He talks about it in the wryly amusing letter on the contest site; I’m not just calling him an art thief.)

Personally, I think Season 4 is summed up with the FaceBlock app, but I have no problem looking at what the rest of the world creates. And there are already some gems. This is probably my favorite, as it’s a perfectly unsettling way of depicting this family (and Tobias) that is instantly recognizable and Hitchcockian.

And while these next two equally don’t have much to do with Season 4, they’re still awesome and deserving of posters in their own right. Note: if you win this contest, you totally lose control of that picture, as mentioned in this lengthy rule list

arrested development carl weather8-bit can’t come close to topping the awesomeness of a Carl Weathers reference, but the poster below is interesting, and makes me wish Arrested Development existed as a Nintendo RPG adventure.

arrested development fan artThere aren’t that many submissions posted yet, but I’m betting it gets as wild as Lucille 2 in there over the next few days. You can head over to Amazon to pre-order Season 4, and who knows, maybe it’ll come out by the time Season 5 starts to happen. I’m going to cross my hooks and hope.

Fox's New Reality Show 'Utopia' Already Seems Like A Disaster

utopia foxFox’s latest reality series, Utopia, hasn’t even premiered yet, but it’s already proven to have a slew of problems. On Tuesday, a 25 year-old contestant going by the name Hex had to be taken to the hospital due to a severe case of dehydration. It’s not the first time one of the show’s contestants has had to leave the program and it won’t be the last, but it is surprising that Fox has had so many problems with the series before it even airs an episode.

TMZ first broke the news about Hex and her health problems, noting that Hex was unlikely to be in any real danger and had just been taken to the hospital for “precautionary measures.” She was hospitalized for 5 hours at Henry Mayo Hospital in Valencia. The news comes just days after fellow contestant Andrea Cox was kicked off the show due to sneaking in a smartphone and researching the other contestants. In Hex’s case, there is a happy ending, however. After being treated at the hospital, she was allowed to return to the Utopia set.

The show follows 15 individuals who have been dropped off in an isolated, 3-acre area where cameras are trained on them all of the time. The goal is to live in the wilderness, sort-of how Survivor worked in its earliest amalgamations; however, the Utopia cast members will also be facing challenges revolving around creating a brand new society and culture. It sounds like a reality competition, but it’s not. There is no prize. Thus, it’s been praised by those involved as the realest of real reality, although obviously, sending a person off of the compound and allowing them to be treated medically doesn’t really fit into Utopia’s isolated community premise. I guess allowing medical treatment is better than getting sued.

Screen Shot 2014 09 03 at 8.50.08 AMInterestingly, Big Brother-style livestream cameras are also a big part of the brand new experiment show, but the live feeds did not choose to show the subsequent hospitalization of Hex, probably because it destroys any semblance of actual reality. Honestly, Fox has invested a lot in Utopia. Stars have been signed on to the show for 52 weeks of hard living in the wilderness, and casting is ongoing just in case there are cell phone or health issues (also, cast members can totally be kicked off the series). It’s only Day 5 of the drama and it’s looking like Fox might have more problems to navigate than the network may have expected. If you are interested in seeing Utopia turn into a disaster, you can tune in when the show premieres during primetime on Fox. The first episode will air Sunday, September 7 at 8 p.m. ET. If you are interested in other fall premieres, you can take a look at our Fall Premiere Schedule

The Visual Effects In 'Game Of Thrones' Season 4 Are Mind-Blowing

Tyrion dancing, game of thrones

An incredible amount of work goes into making "Game of Thrones" look as stunning as it does.

The Emmy Award-winning visual effects studio Rodeo FX released a new video compilation of their work on season 4 of the HBO series.

The mystery behind some of the glorious sweeping establishing shots have been revealed, and we get a good look at the full scope of how everything from landscapes to large armies is assembled on screen.

For example, this scene featuring Arya and the Hound shows the desolate wasteland lying in front of them is actually quite serene.

Another sequence shows a city pop up right before Daenerys' eyes.

Daenerys' "unsullied" army was actually much smaller than it appeared. Most of the soldiers were added digitally.

It turns out Daenerys' view wasn't as spectacular in this shot overlooking a vast kingdom.

This is how most of the scenes occur. Here, a post-production background made this white walker and his horse look much smaller.

The battle sequences are particularly fun to watch come together, as these men on horseback look rather silly without the epic scenery added to the background.

Two Major Characters Will Not Appear In 'Game Of Thrones' Season 5

game of thrones bran

Changes are afoot for Game of Thrones Season 5.  Though longtime fans of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Firebook series were surely happy to see the stories find widespread appreciation thanks to HBO’s massive hit series adaptation, that elation quickly turned to nervousness as showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss began to steamroll through the books while Martin takes his sweet time in writing the final two books of the series.  Martin has been adamant that his books would take years to adapt into television form, but Benioff and Weiss started covering a fair amount of material from the most recent book, A Dance with Dragons, in Season 4 and recently revealed plans to complete the show after seven seasons whether Martin is finished or not.

As a result of the fact that Benioff and Weiss are heading towards the conclusion of their TV series adaptation, a major storyline from the books will be sidelined for the entire fifth season: that of Bran Stark, Hodor, and their mysterious friends.

Speaking with the Australian Broadcasting Commission (via Vulture), actor Kristian Nairn—who plays Hodor on the show—revealed that he and Isaac Hempstead-Wright—who plays Bran Stark—have this season off entirely:

“We have a season off and we have a year’s hiatus, solely because I imagine our storyline is up to the end of the books.”

Indeed, once book fans saw where Bran and Hodor’s storyline ended up at the end of Season 4, many began wondering just how the series was going to move forward.  An easy fix on the end of Weiss and Benioff is to simply put that story on “pause” for a season.  Though it’s a bit frustrating given that Bran’s story left on a pretty major cliffhanger at the end of Season 4, it’s an understandable work-around.

Game of Thrones has a tendency to feel crowded at times as Weiss and Benioff try their hardest to service all of the many storylines and characters, so I could actually see the absence of the Bran storyline working in the show’s favor in the upcoming season.

Whether George R.R. Martin finishes his book series or not, the end is nigh for Game of Thrones on HBO, so here’s hoping Weiss and Benioff have carved out a satisfying conclusion to this epic fantasy saga.  Game of Thrones Season 5 will premiere on HBO next spring.

NBC Is Paying For Matt Lauer's Helicopter Rides To Work From The Hamptons

After a turbulent past few years at the "Today" show, NBC is doing everything they can to keep host Matt Lauer happy.

According to PageSix, that includes flying him to and from the Hamptons during the week.

“NBC News chiefs want to do everything to keep Matt happy. They believe ‘Today’ has turned a corner and he is the key to its continuing success," a source told the Post. "They agreed to pay for his helicopter flights to the Hamptons and back, so he can spend more time with his family.”

Lauer owns a 40-acre horse farm in Water Mill and a nearby $15 million mansion, in which he lives year-round with his wife, Annette Roque, and their children.

The "Today" anchor previously told co-anchor Hoda Kotb that his life in the Hamptons is more normal than it sounds:

“I think the image that people have is that it’s all polo fields and cocktail parties. And the fact of the matter — my experience and Annette’s experience . . . is about parent-teacher conferences and Little League and music lessons.” He continued, “We have a painfully normal existence . . . We go to the local drugstore, and we walk the dog on the beach . . . and take pony-riding lessons . . . very much small-town America — it just happens to have a reputation and a name like the Hamptons.”

While NBC sources told The Post that chopper rides have been up to three times a week, an NBC rep insists: "On rare occasions, Matt will fly home, but most of the time you’ll find him stuck in traffic on the Long Island Expressway with everyone else.”

In June, Lauer extended his $20 million-a-year contract with NBC News to remain a “Today” co-host through 2016, following rumors that he would leave the show after how he was portrayed in the media following Ann Curry's 2012 departure.

'The Simpsons' Marathon Shattered FXX's Ratings Records

The Simpsons

Beloved cartoon sitcom "The Simpsons" premiered on FXX last month with a 552-episode marathon that broke all of the fledgling channel's ratings records.

The 12-day marathon dedicated entirely to the animated family helped catapult FXX near the top of the Nielsen cable ratings. In fact, on three nights of the 12-day marathon, FXX captured the biggest audience in the much-desired 18-to-49 demographic, the New York Times reports.

bart simpsonFurther mind-blowing stats that cement "The Simpsons'" legacy and lasting appeal: Before the marathon began, the year-old FXX ranked 49th among all cable channels in the 18-to-45 demo; "The Simpsons" helped temporarily push FXX to 3rd on that list as fans binge-watched episodes they've probably seen dozens of times before. Even FXX execs were surprised, since the marathon helped boost the channel's ratings three times more than they anticipated.

Last year, Fox transformed their Fox Soccer Channel into FXX, which also boasts cult comedies like "The League" and "Archer" in its lineup. However, they should have just renamed their upstart network "The Simpsons' Channel," since the animated avalanche isn't ending any time soon.

Uproxx writes that FXX will show 24 hours of the series every week this fall, including six-hour blocks on Mondays and Fridays. So if you, like us, missed the "Mr. Sparkle" episode during the 12-day marathon — #69 on our list of the 150 best "Simpsons" episodes!— there will be plenty of chances to catch it again.
