New 'Homeland' Trailer Hints At Series' Return To Glory Days

homeland season 4.JPGAfter a few teasers in July, the first trailer for “Homeland” season 4 is here, and it looks like we’ll finally see a return to the series we were first introduced to in 2011.

If you haven’t been happy with the Showtime drama the past few seasons (it began dabbling in the romantics and side stories), the new one should be a huge revitalization to the series as it focuses on Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) out in the field in charge of Istanbul’s CIA unit.

At this year’s TCAs (Television Critics Association), producer Alex Gansa confirmed season four will be a big change from the past, focusing on the "public and private costs of keeping America safe."

The changes come at a time when the show has lost its position as an award’s show darling.

While both Mandy Patinkin and Danes received Emmy nominations for season 3, it’s the first time since the series’ launch the show itself hasn’t received an a nod for its writing. It’s also the first time it will be left out of the best drama race.

To kick off the new season, “Homeland” will return with two episodes October 5 at 9 p.m. on Showtime.

It’s been about a year since the final eight episodes of “Breaking Bad” aired on AMC.

If you miss the duo of Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul on television, this should make your day.

The two reunited for a six-minute video produced by Audi to promote next week’s Primetime Emmy Awards. However, instead of reprising their beloved roles of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, they star in a parody of History’s “Pawn Stars” series.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus from “Veep” joins in, too.

It’s comedy genius.

Randy comes quick to her defense. After all, Paul has two supporting actor Emmys of his own for the AMC drama.

New 'The Walking Dead' Teaser Trailer Goes From Creepy To Terrifying In 10 Seconds

The Walking Dead's latest teaser may only be ten seconds long, but it's ten seconds of creepiness and terror to remind us that the zombie drama is poised to return for its anticipated fifth season in a matter of months.

Following up on the trailer that debuted at Comic-Con last month, the new 10-second spot reminds us of the danger that awaits Rick and his people outside that railroad car. The Walking Dead teaser aims for horror, with creepy people in gas masks boarding the train car...

gas masks

And the groggy view of a figure hunched over a table where someone's body (living or dead?) appears to be laying...

table

And then there's the creepy sight of the shadows coming from under the door...

shadows

That in itself is unsettling, but factor in the agonized screaming that we hear behind that sight and it's amped up to full-scale horror. Something bad is happening to someone.

While we're still months away from The Walking Dead Season 5's October 12 premiere date, we have heard some updates about the new season, including the promise of more violence, decayed zombies and moments from the comics. Most recently, Robert Kirkman went on record about Daryl's sexuality. But in that case, it sounds like we may not hear the back-story to explain that situation anytime soon.

We also know that the first six minutes of Season 5 will be brutal. So there's that to look forward to, I suppose. Check out the previously released Walking Dead Season 5 trailer below.

A Ridiculous Rule Is Allowing 'True Detective' To Go Up Against 'Breaking Bad' At The Emmys

true detective matthew mcconaughey woody harrelson

When the Emmys air Monday, HBO's hit series "True Detective" will go head-to-head with AMC's "Breaking Bad" in one of the closest races of the night.

The mystery crime thriller received a total of 12 nominations this year including nods for both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Drama Series.

While that sounds fair, both shows were incredibly talked about in the past year receiving high praise from critics and fans alike, some say it makes little sense for the HBO series to be sitting alongside "Breaking Bad" during its final season.

Back in March, HBO announced "True Detective" would compete as a drama series. The news was met with surprise since the show fits the Emmys' definition of a miniseries

A miniseries is based on a single theme or story line, which is resolved within the piece. In a single awards year all of the parts must be presented under the same title and have continuity of production supervision.

A miniseries consists of two or more episodes with a total running time of at least four
broadcast hours (at least 150 program minutes).

However, it also fits the definition of a drama series:

Comedy and drama series are defined as programs with multiple episodes (minimum of six), where the majority of the running time of at least six of the total eligible episodes are primarily comedic for comedy series entries, or primarily dramatic for dramatic series entries, in which the ongoing theme, storyline and main characters are presented under the same title and have continuity of production supervision.

Since day one, it's been known "True Detective" would have a different cast and storyline every season

It's an unusual television format that FX's "American Horror Story" adopted when it first aired in 2011. It's also one that the network's new show "Fargo," nominated for 18 Emmys, also shares.

american horror story

However, both of those shows are dueling it out in the TV movie/miniseries category.

What gives? Is HBO's drama getting special treatment?

Not exactly.

Vulture pointed out a closer read of the Emmy's rules shows exactly why "True Detective" never would have been put into the miniseries category unless producers went out of their way to receive permission to run in either category.

A limited-run series with a "created by" credit CANNOT enter as a miniseries
unless the producer for the limited run series applies for and receives entitlement to dual
qualification, i.e. qualification in more than one category, because of an affirmative
determination by the Awards Committee that the limited run series has elements of both
drama series and miniseries categories.

The jarring line there is the fact that any miniseries that conveniently has a "created by" credit can't be labeled a miniseries unless a petition is submitted.

It's a rule that has allowed "American Horror Story" to be nominated first as a drama and later as a miniseries after it lost to "Homeland" at the 2012 Golden Globes in the drama category

The move was met with a lot of backlash from critics who claimed the show thought it had a better chance of winning in the Outstanding TV movie or miniseries category. But honestly it seems kind of weird for a show with a revolving cast and storyline to receive the same treatment as longer dramas.

Vulture reports the only reason "Fargo" didn't have the same issue this year is because the FX series cleverly made the decision to phrase its credit as "created for television by" instead of "created by."bob odenkirk fargo

It's a very unclear and murky way for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences to deal with the nomination categories for shows.

It's not just "True Detective" that was placed into a category that may not correctly define it. "Orange is the New Black" is being labeled as a comedy so it doesn't go up against fellow Netflix series "House of Cards." Showtime's "Shameless" is also in the category after being considered a drama for three years now that award-winning "30 Rock" is over.

What's worse is that we could very likely see "True Detective" in the miniseries category next year if there isn't as much buzz about season 2 and it doesn't want to go toe to toe with AMC's "Mad Men."

The "created by" loophole, if you will call it this, allows HBO to take advantage of a brilliant opportunity to try and take down TV favorite "Breaking Bad" during its final Emmy run.

Think of the headlines if "True Detective" shut out "Breaking Bad" from the biggest awards of the night.

Yes, "True Detective" certainly has the legs to possibly upset the AMC show, but the bigger win for HBO may be knowing it beat out a show it passed on so many years ago all because an exec thought the series' premise was too boring during a pitch meeting.

Aaron Paul Is Hosting An Awesome 'Breaking Bad' Scavenger Hunt

aaron paul emmy promoThis will be Breaking Bad's final year to win an Emmy Award, and to mark the occasion, Emmy nominee Aaron Paul is conducting a Breaking Bad scavenger hunt for those fans in the Hollywood area.

Check out the post he shared on Instagram announcing the Los Angeles-set hunt:

Yeah, bitch.

aaron paul breaking bad

Aaron Paul says he'll be conducting the scavenger hunt "around LA on Monday" before the 66th Emmy Awards take place. Among the prizes are signed Breaking Bad scripts, posters, dolls, action figures and Breaking Bad art. As for where fans can find these items, they'll be hidden around the Hollywood area. That's presumably in public places, but he doesn't get specific in terms of location beyond the general area. Still, it sounds like a fun event for Hollywood locals looking to celebrate the AMC drama ahead of its last Emmy awards.

Breaking Bad topped previous years by earning itself a whopping 16 Emmy nominations this year. Via Emmys.com, here's the breakdown of nominations and wins for the AMC series since the first year it was eligible (2008):

2014 – 16 nominations
2013 – 13 nominations, 3 wins
2012 – 13 nominations, 1 win
2011 – 0 nominations, 0 wins
2010 – 7 nominations, 2 wins
2009 – 5 nominations, 2 wins
2008 – 4 nominations, 2 wins
Total: 58 nominations, 10 wins

Breaking Bad won for Outstanding Drama Series in 2013, and it would be great to see it win that one again for the second half of its final season, but it has some steep competition this year, particularly against newcomer True Detective. The HBO drama not only has a lot of buzz going for it, being one of the better new dramas to air in the last year, but it's also likely fresher in people's minds, as Breaking Bad's final season wrapped up last summer, close to a year ago. Not only is Breaking Bad up againstTrue Detective, but it also has Game of ThronesHouse of CardsMad Men andDownton Abbey up against it.

In the Actor categories, Bryan Cranston faces off against Kevin Spacey (House of Cards), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom) and True Detective stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. As a "Supporting" actor, Aaron Paul doesn't have any True Detective Competition, but he's up against Jim Carter (Downton Abbey), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Josh Charles (The Good Wife), Mandy Patinkin (Homeland) and Jon Voight (Ray Donovan). That's a lot of talent for two categories!

Regardless of how many statues Breaking Bad manages to take home for the second half of its final season, the series had an outstanding run, and one that fans won't soon forget. It helps that we have Aaron Paul running scavenger hunts and participating in hilarious viral videos with Bryan Cranston to remind us of how much we miss the series.

'The Simpsons' Marathon's Top 5 Can't Miss Episodes: Day One

$

The SimpsonsFor diehard Simpsons fans, the next 12 days are going to be some of the best that time on Earth has to offer, as FXX begins its massive marathon, during which every episode of the classic series will air. No one is stopping you from watching everything from end to end, but we wouldn’t advise it, as things might start to get pretty off the wall by Day 3 and you start eating dry coffee on toast.

To help you figure out the best times of the day to escape your own city and head to Springfield – or at least when to set your DVRs – we’re picking five can’t-miss episodes from each day of the marathon. Why only five, you ask? Because I’m liable to put all 550 episodes on this list otherwise, thus drawing endless waves of ridicule and ire for still getting value out of episodes like “Wedding for Disaster” and “The Principal and the Pauper.” (Call me Armin Tamzarian.)

Thankfully, The Simpsons’ early days were absolutely stuffed with amazing episodes, thus making this a list of diamonds in the slightly less perfect diamonds. Later seasons are far less carat-filled, but we’ll cross that haggard bridge when we come to it. Kick your feet back, grab your favorite beer with Duff scrawled on it in black marker, and enjoy.

simpsons homer roasting open fire
5. Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire – 10:00 a.m. ET

There’s no better way to first experience TV’s longest-lasting family than with their very first full-length episode. (I guess nobody at FXX wanted to pony up that Tracey Ullman Show money.) Season 1 is quite unlike any Simpsons season to follow, telling fewer jokes and landing bigger emotional punches, but you get it all and more in their network debut. Not only is it a Christmas episode that works all year round, but the family is shown doing things that they would still be doing today. Homer screws up and backends his way into family appreciation, Bart disobeys common sense in an effort to make someone like him, and Marge gets just mad enough for it to count before allowing everyone back into her good graces. I guess Lisa is the least developed at this point, but she matures the fastest of anyone in the years to come.

Highlight: Santa’s Little Helper joins the family!

simpsons treehouse horrors

4. Treehouse of Horror I – 5: 30 p.m. ET

It’s a shame to skip the rest of Season 1 to get here, but when “here” is a Treehouse of Horror episode, it’s all worth it. This inaugural Halloween special not only began one of the most enjoyable trends in all of TV, but it still stands tall among the rest of its kind. After a quick warning from Marge – because The Simpsons was still quite controversial at this time – the episode jumps into an Amityville-style segment that sees everyone in the family besides Marge actively trying to murder one another. (And the house has the worst fate of all, go figure.) Then we get a classic Twilight Zone parody, with the first appearances from the big-headed aliens Kang and Kodos, plus Serak the Preparer. And with stark, shadowy animation, “The Raven” might still be one of the most lush sequences The Simpsons has ever put out there, eschewing jokes for atmospheric disquiet and James Earl Jones’ narration. There is nothing about this episode that isn’t wonderful.

Highlight: How to Cook for Forty Humans, because the more punchlines the better.

bart simpson

3. Bart the Daredevil – 7:00 p.m. ET

If you want another good emotional story that showed off some Simpson sibling rivalry, check the episode before this one, Bart vs. Thanksgiving. But if you want a laugh bonanza that starts to tease the quick-witted utopia of this series' golden age, you can’t go wrong with “Bart the Daredevil.” It’s probably best known for introducing Homer’s lengthy gorge pratfall into television’s visual lexicon, but it was also a sly response to parents and media who like to think children will do every stupid thing they see on TV. In showcasing the idiocy of Bart amateurishly mimicking the daredevilry of his idol Lance Murdock, the writers proved that sometimes things are best left to the professionals, no matter how much you want to impress someone. Especially when the professionals themselves have broken every bone in their bodies several times over.

Highlight: Lance Murdock’s speech and subsequent fall into the pool.

simpsons young marge and homer

2. The Way We Was – 9:00 p.m. ET

Throughout the many years that The Simpsons has been on the air, some of the more effective story arcs have been those where Homer and Marge are at odds with one another. (In as realistic a way as possible, preferably.) This episode sees the loving couple sharing the story of how they met with Bart, Lisa and Maggie. It was the first time audiences were taken back into Homer and Marge’s past, and what a treat it was, especially in hearing Dan Castellaneta and Julie Kavner skew their voices younger. Though Homer’s oafish and dishonest ways almost lost him the future love of his life, it all came down to the busy hands of Artie Ziff, an appalling dweeb voiced with smarmy perfection by Jon Lovitz, who would reprise the character in later episodes. Homer and Marge’s relationship problems here are nowhere near as convoluted as they get in future seasons, and it’s nice to just relive the good old days of prom dancing.

Highlight: MCBAIN!

homer herb powell

1. Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou? – 10:30 p.m. ET

Homer’s family has a lot of skeletons in the closet, and one of the most handsome ones is Homer’s half-brother Herb Powell (Danny DeVito), revealed by a fatalistic Grampa. Herb is everything that Homer wishes he could be: successful, employed by a good company, and non-bald. As the family takes a trip to Detroit to see what the good life is like, Homer attempts to assert himself in the car designing world while Herb assimilates himself into the Simpsons family. As you can imagine, Homer screws everything up by creating the dumbest and least sensible vehicle imaginable, and Herb cuts off all ties (until a future episode). I always enjoy when the Simpsons head into unfamiliar territories, and it was nice to see the kids all actually content with life for a change. Leave it to Marge to figure out that money doesn't equal happiness.

Highlight: The Homer, which was actually turned into a real car last summer.

Why You Should Be Watching 'Banshee' — The Craziest Show On TV

$
0
0

banshee lucas hood"Banshee" may be smashing network records at Cinemax, but it still hasn't hit mainstream audiences. This may have something to do with its dreaded Friday night timeslot or the fact that Cinemax is a premium cable channel in significantly less households than HBO.

The testosterone-fueled series from Alan Ball, creator of HBO's "Six Feet Under" and "True Blood," seems to have been relegated to "guilty pleasure" status. "Banshee" enters its third season next year, and while many acknowledge the show is totally ludicrous, that's exactly what makes the series so fun.

"Banshee" opens with our protagonist (Anthony Starr) walking out of prison after a 15-year stint for what we later learn was a botched robbery. He immediately tracks down his ex-lover/partner-in-crime and discovers that she has since become a completely new person with a new identity and family to boot.

The unnamed criminal treks all the way to Amish country in Banshee, PA to find her, but once he does, she tells him to stay out of her life. This leads our hero to a local bar to drown his sorrows, and the only other patron at this bar just so happens to be the new Banshee sheriff, who starts the job the following day. Some thugs with horrible luck decide to rob this bar, and after a spectularly violent sequence, the new sheriff as well as both thieves are dead.

In a moment of fleeting stupidity/total genius, our mysterious drifter takes the dead sheriff's credentials and assumes his identity, effectively becoming Lucas Hood, sheriff of Banshee, PA. As of the end of season two, his real name still remains a mystery.

banshee lucas hood fightIf that mini-synopsis makes "Banshee" sound like the pulpiest, kitschiest show on television, that's because it is. What starts as a flimsy plan to win back his woman winds up cutting way deeper as Hood learns that Banshee is a town full of dirty little secrets and takes it upon himself to legitimately patrol the town. What may read as convoluted on paper works on screen due to the show's frenetic energy and total disregard for political-correctness.

Alan Ball and showrunners Jonathan Tropper and David Schickler seem to believe that crafting impressive action sequences and graphic sex scenes are more important than all else, and in this case, I'd argue they're right. Fortunately, the characters that inhabit Banshee are all fascinating and given just enough backstory to allow the audience to really connect.

There's Carrie Hopewell, Hood's old fling and the entire reason he came to Banshee in the first place, Kai Proctor, the evil mastermind (of Amish descent) on the top of the Banshee food-chain, his niece Rebecca, Alex Longshadow, a Native Kinaho, and Job, Hood's flamboyant right-hand-man who is to "Banshee" what Lafayette is to "True Blood." Ulrich Thomsen's performance as villain Kai Proctor is easily the most compelling part of the show — you'd be hard pressed to find anybody as crazy as he is anywhere else on television. He steals every scene he's in and truly earns his horrifying reputation time and time again.

Once connections between the Amish community, the Kinaho tribe, and all the relevant players are made explicity clear, the show really takes off running and moves from one terrific setpiece to the next as Hood tries his best to both protect the town from the evil mastermind who essentially runs the town and deal with his own demons. Eventually, Hood's past comes back to haunt him when his two worlds collide.

"Banshee" is an exercise in excess — the sheer amount of violence, sex, and evil in each episode is astounding. The show is so ridiculously over-the-top that it borders on absurd brlliance. Before you know where one completely crazy subplot is going, another one even more off-the-wall pops up.

banshee14_36

The action on "Banshee" is more well-choreographed and satisfying than the majority of major motion pictures. There's one particularly bloody fight scene from episode three in which Lucas Hood scraps with a MMA fighter for what feels like 15 minutes. This sequence is so memorably brutal and encompasses the philosophy of the show that it can act as a litmus test for whether or not someone will enjoy the series.

Empirically, "Banshee" shouldn't work as well as it does. The dialogue can get a bit hokey, and some of the big action sequences go too far even for the standards set by the series. From my brief description, it may sound like a violent misogynist's wet dream with little artistic merit, but there's more to it than that.

The beauty of the show is all in the execution. Ball knows his way around crafting entertaining television, and as the show progresses it's hard to not get wrapped up in all its eccentric, visceral glory.

"Banshee" is expected to return to Cinemax in January 2015. The first two seasons are currently available to Cinemax subscribers.

Kevin Spacey Is Making $500,000 Per Episode For 'House Of Cards'

There's a big reason Kevin Spacey made the jump to Netflix.

According to a new salary report from TV Guide, Spacey is making $500,000 an episode for his lead role on the Emmy-winning political thriller "House of Cards."

TV Guide reports that number includes producer fees and profit participation.

Season 2 of the series, which launched in February, had 13 episodes. That puts the actor's salary at $6.5 million.

The figure places Spacey into an elite club of network stars who make over $500,000 per episode. According to TV Guide, it includes Mark Harmon for "NCIS" ($525,000), "Two and a Half Men" actors Jon Cryer ($650,000) and Ashton Kutcher ($750,000), and "The Big Bang Theory" stars Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, and Johnny Galecki, who netted $1 million per-episode salaries.

Spacey plays a ruthless democratic house whip, Frank Underwood, who strategizes his way to the top of the White House.

"House of Cards" received 13 Emmy nods for Season 2, including Outstanding Lead Actor (Spacey), Outstanding Lead Actress (Robin Wright), and Outstanding Drama Series.

TV Guide predicts the streaming service could eventually pay Spacey a $1 million salary for his role.

"House of Cards" has been renewed for Season 3, which is expected to air on Netflix in 2015.

Steven Spielberg is Turning 'Minority Report' Into A TV Show

Minority Report computer screen

Science fiction classics are making a comeback. A sequel to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner is currently in the works at Alcon Entertainment, and cult favorites Battlestar Galactica and Babylon 5 are both being adapted for the big screen.

Now a more recent science fiction property is making a comeback – as a TV show.

According to The Wrap, Steven Spielberg is developing a TV series based on his 2002 sci-fi hit Minority Report, which will be penned by Godzilla writer Max Borenstein.

Now, the deal hasn’t closed quite yet, but should the series go forward at Amblin Television, Spielberg is expected to choose an actor as the lead, just as he did with Halle Berry on CBS’ newest sci-fi drama Extant.

For those who may have missed it, Minority Report starred Tom Cruise as PreCrime Captain John Anderton, a policeman in 2054 who used humans with precognitive abilities to stop murders before they happened. As always, there were a few flaws in the system, and Anderton ended up on the run in an action-packed thrill ride.

This isn’t the first “pre-crime” science fiction series to debut on CBS. Back in 2011,Person of Interest – which has a a similar premise – premiered to high ratings and great reviews. The crime-drama, quickly dubbed Minority Report-lite by the media, followed “an ex-CIA hitman and a scientist who team up to prevent crimes before they happen.”

Person of Interest is now entering its fourth season, and its success very well could’ve paved the way for Minority Report to be adapted for TV.

However, as many know, Minority Report is actually based on a short story by author Philip K. Dick. So it’s just as possible that, following the success of last year’s Under the Dome and the moderate success of this summer’s Extant, Spielberg could simply be looking to adapt his original movie rather than follow in the other series’ footsteps.

What do you think about Spielberg bringing Minority Report to TV? Is there room for both Person of Interest and Minority Report on CBS? Let us know in the comments.

Stay tuned to Screen Rant for more Minority Report TV series news as it becomes available.

Season 2 Of 'True Detective' Will Premiere Next Summer

$

true detective woody harrelsonWhile fans only have a few short days to find out if HBO's True Detective can take home the Best Drama Series award at the Emmys this Monday, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo confirmed at the Edinburgh TV Festival that Season 2 will start production in September for a Summer 2015 premiere, with casting to be announced shortly.

"We're going to start shooting in September for it to air next summer. [It has] different characters, a different setting. It's set in California, all of California. There are three cops. One of the characters is female. I think that's probably all I'm allowed to say. We'll probably be announcing casting soon."

There have been a number of actors rumored to be in contention for various roles this season, including Colin FarrellTaylor KitschGarrett Hedlund and Vince VaughnElisabeth Moss was also reportedly approached for a role, but she denied any involvement with the show earlier this month.

The story reportedly centers on the death of Ben Caspar, the corrupt city manager of a fictional California city. Colin Farrell is reportedly up for the role of Ray Velcro, a detective with issues in both his personal and professional lives. Taylor Kitsch's rumored role is 28-year-old detective Paul Woodrugh, who has seen plenty of destruction and violence. Vince Vaughn is in contention to play Frank Semyon, a businessman who is pushing for a high-speed light-rail system that will link Northern and Southern California. The role Elisabeth Moss was rumored for is Ani Bezzerides, the sheriff of Monterey who has issues with gambling and alcohol.

Of course, none of this has been confirmed yet, but if production is starting in September, hopefully we'll hear more concrete details soon.

Nic Pizzolatto Matthew McConaughey True Detective HBOMichael Lombardo also revealed he has read scripts for the first two Season 2 episodes, written by series creator Nic Pizzolatto, plus outlines for subsequent episodes. Here's what he had to say, revealing that the writing is even better than the first season.

"When you have a success like True Detective it's challenging, less for us and more for someone like Nic, how to face the page again and start afresh and not be haunted by the success of the show you've just done. But the writing is better than last season. It's exceptional."

The HBO executive also added that the show plans on employing "three or four directors" for Season 2, as opposed to Season 1 where Cary Fukunaga directed all eight episodes.

Michael Lombardo also talked about his history with creator Nic Pizzolatto, revealing it was one of the few shows he wanted to make right after reading the pilot.

"We'd worked with Nic before. We hired him to do a pilot script, which we decided not to go forward with. But the writing was unbelievable. So we get a call to say Nic had written two episodes [of True Detective] and was it in with possibility for attached stars. And they gave us the first two scripts. I knew in the room that we had to do this. It was clear that they had packaged it and it was competitive. I just said 'I want to do this.'

The Insane Business Ideas On 'Nathan For You' Have Had Mixed Results

Dumb Starbucks/ Nathan Fielder

Comedy Central's "Nathan for You" just wrapped its second season this week, and we are already eagerly awaiting season three.

Nathan Fielder's comedy show involves convincing guests that he is there to help their small businesses flourish and then offering ridiculous suggestions. Although guests are frequently perplexed by his suggestions, they think they are on a business turnaround reality show, not a comedy show, and they always wind up going through with it. The fact that so many small business owneres are willing to appear on "reality" television to help their company says a lot about America's $40 billion management consulting industry.

Some of Nathan's ideas are so ludicrous that they actually work, while many fail for that same reason. The comedy often stems from the business owners and unsuspecting customers' recations to his tactics, as Nathan himself remains as straight-faced as humanly possible.

Below are five examples of "Nathan for You" business plans that received mixed results:

5. Selling poo-flavored frozen yogurt. The very first episode of "Nathan For You" opens with Nathan pitching to a Los Angeles-based frozen yogurt shop owner about how he could get more customers in the door if he implemented a "crazy" new flavor that would be so outrageous that people would flock to the establishment just to see the madness for themselves. While it's not an effective long-term plan, Nathan's stunt did bring in customers.

4. Rebranding a caricature artists as an insult comic. In an effort to help veteran caricature artist Greg Dohlen make a name for himself, Nathan comes up with a plan to turn him into "the king of sting", as he believes people want to laugh at themselves. This is one instance where Nathan's silly scheme actually works, as all of Greg's customers seem delighted by his offensive drawings.

3. Allowing attractive people to shoplift. In an attempt to put a positive spin on a clothing store owner's shoplifting problem, Nathan comes up with the brilliant idea of allowing attractive, "trend-setting" people to steal one item. In order to determine who or who is not attractive, Nathan has the store owner and her employees compile a list of attractive traits and hires a security guard to enforce them. Hilarity ensues as the lovably awkward security guard does his best to pick and choose who qualifies as attractive. The idea here, that allowing attractive people to steal will inspire more "less attractive" customers to shop there, is pretty flimsy, so it's no surprise that it doesn't really work.

2. "Selling" alcohol to underagers. When a liqour store owner reveals that he turns down a lot of teenagers attempting to buy alcohol, Nathan comes up with a plan that allows the store to legally "sell" alcohol to minors without actually giving it to them. By accepting the sale and putting their purchased booze in a storage room for them to pick up when they turn 21, Nathan has found a loophole that technically allows the store owner to "sell" to teens. Despite Nathan's best efforts to accomodate the angry customers, this plan angered more patrons than it amused.

1. Staging a fake movie shoot to get people to buy souvernirs. In what may be his masterpiece, Nathan attempts to bring more customers into a struggling LA souvernir shop by setting up a fake movie shoot inside the store. The plan is to offer consumers a role in the film as paying customers and thus trick them into spending their actual money during the shoot. The genius behind this bit is just how far Nathan takes it — to make it appear legitimate, he hires a Johnny Depp impersonator and actually decides to make the movie to avoid potential legal troubles. Nathan's riotous plan actually works, as tons of excited Depp fans jump at the opportunity to be an extra in the film and shell out real dollars to do so. It truly has to be seen to be believed.

New ‘Better Call Saul’ Trailer Teases How Saul Became A Sleazy Lawyer

$

AMC’s Breaking Bad has perhaps eclipsed similar prestige TV shows like Mad Men to become the standard bearer of just how good a television show can be. The series finale concluded the morality play of science-teacher-turned-meth-kingpin Walter White, but the upcoming spinoff, Better Call Saul, will bring that universe back to life.

The last we saw of morally-challenged attorney Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), he was about to ditch his entire identity and start over to evade prosecution. When Better Call Saul was announced, many fans wondered if this would be the starting point for the spinoff, until it was revealed that the show is actually (primarily) a prequel, taking place before the events of Breaking Bad, and even featuring the return of Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut.

Expectations are very high, but so far all audiences have seen was a very short teaser video which still managed to convey the new show’s tone and highlight Saul’s smarmy charisma. Now, on the heels of that sneak peek, AMC has a released another teaser, this one more substantial and featuring Better Call Saul‘s creators Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan. Check out the video above.

Gould and Gilligan finally give us a concrete time frame for the prequel (about five years before Saul meets Walter White on Breaking Bad) and remind us that when we first meet Saul, his name is actually Jimmy McGill. They also spend almost thirty seconds asking each other the questions that fans will presumably have to watch the show to learn the answers to.

Here’s their exchange from the video:

Gould: He didn’t start this [as Saul Goodman].

Gilligan: He’s Jimmy McGill.

Gould: How do you become Saul Goodman?

Gilligan: Yeah, and why?

Gould: Why? What kind of problem do you have that becoming Saul Goodman solves it?

better call saul goodmanIndeed. The video ends with Saul/Jimmy explaining to someone how he “doesn’t go looking for guilty people to represent. Who needs that kind of aggravation, right?” The joke, of course, is that by the time we meet Saul in Breaking Bad, guilty clients are the only kind he has.

AMC appears to be carefully building up their marketing for Better Call Saul, and while this teaser offers some new footage and an ironically funny line from the always-welcome Odenkirk, it’s actually an impressive little package for all it accomplishes. Gould and Gilligan seem to be presenting us with the show’s overall theme of transformation, one which echoes that of Breaking Bad even as they get audiences excited all over again with another glimpse of Saul.

While everyone involved is determined to make something “fresh and new” with Better Call Saul, it still seems to reflect the original show in that this is the story of the evolution of a criminal. Even though we’ve seen what happens to Saul, the spinoff is said to take place “before, during and after” Breaking Bad, and the potential of the show having a decidedly nonlinear storytelling style has been confirmed more than once. Does this mean we’ll meet up with a post-Walter White at some point?

Even if that doesn’t happen, Saul’s origin story could still make for a fascinating counterpoint to Walter White’s saga, and shed new light on different aspects of this universe. Odenkirk will be joined by Michael McKean (This Is Spinal Tap), Jonathan Banks, Rhea Seehorn (Franklin & Bash), Patrick Fabian (Grey’s Anatomy) and Michael Mando (Orphan Black).

Better Call Saul premieres on AMC in February of 2015.

'Mythbusters' Just Fired More Than Half Its Cast

mythbusters"Mythbusters" may be famous for its wacky, one-of-a-kind experiments, but on a structural level, the show has been following the same format for about a decade. Not anymore. “Build Team” members Kari Byron, Tory Belleci, and Grant Imahara were just given their walking papers, leaving originals Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage as a two-man team again.
Mythbusters
The announcement was made at the end of Sunday night’s "Mythbusters" episode, but it was clearly known to everyone involved with the show for a long time prior. In fact, as soon as word officially got out, Kari took to her Twitter to open up and say goodbye in a lengthy correspondence …

I guess you guys are finding out the news right about now. After a decade of the MythBusters, we are no longer with the show. Thank you to all the fans who have supported us. The show is taking a new direction. It was an amazing run. I learned so much about myself and the world. I love you all @MythBusters. I am sad for an ending but there will be exciting new adventures for us."

kari mythbustersThere are two reasons why "Mythbusters" may have decided to go in a different direction. First, this may be an issue completely related to money. Fielding a second team and paying three more on-air personalities is not cheap. Because the show is not at the peak of its popularity, Discovery Channel may have asked producers to trim the fat a little bit and reduce the overall budget to avoid cancellation. That would be a disappointing development, but it is one faced by a fair number of shows that are able to make it more than 10 seasons.

The second reason could be related to stagnancy. We all expect to see a certain kind of program when we turn on "Mythbusters." Moving forward, we need to see those same basic elements, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t be repackaged and presented in more exciting ways. Even something as simple as alterations during transitions can freshen things up.

When "Mythbusters" returns for new episodes, we’ll have to see how much of the overall program is changed. It would be a shame if producers thought moving on from Kari, Tory, and Grant would represent enough difference. Instead, their departures need to be accompanied by cosmetic improvements, as well.

Regardless, thanks for all the memories, guys. The show has been great for a lot of years, and Kari, Tory, and Grant were all big parts of that. They'll be missed.

Aaron Paul Is Leading Fans On An Awesome 'Breaking Bad' Scavenger Hunt Before The Emmys

yeah science breaking bad jesse pinkman aaron paul

Most actors probably spend the hours ahead of the Emmys prepping for the awards show.

"Breaking Bad" star Aaron Paul, who's nominated for a supporting Emmy for the AMC series, is spending his day sending fans of the show on a scavenger hunt to win prizes and meet cast members.

This is how you send a show off right.

So far, Paul has sent fans in search of four actors.

They've all been responded to pretty quickly.

The first challenge was to find R.J. Mitte in an IHOP.

Mitte, who played cereal-loving Walt Jr., had an autographed box of Raisin Bran waiting for a group of fans.

If you've ever wanted plush versions of Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Paul), actor Luis Moncada who played one half of the axe-wielding twins was holding them hostage at a taco joint.

The only thing better than binge-watching "Breaking Bad" is receiving a signed copy of the pilot script from the entire cast. Paul asked fans to meet up with Badger (Matt Jones) at the Guitar Center in Hollywood for a chance to receive it.

Things became crazy real fast.

Next door to the Guitar Center you can meet Krazy 8 (Max Arciniega) at Rock n Roll Ralph's. No word on what he's giving out.

Now, Paul is asking fans to find the license plate to his car on the show. For those who don't remember, it's "The CAPN."

the capn breaking bad

Now, he just challenged everyone to a game of tag in West Hollywood Park. This could get dangerous.

This isn't the first time Paul has launched a "Breaking Bad" scavenger hunt for fans.

In September, Paul scattered tickets for a screening of the series' final episodes in Boise, Idaho.

Want in on the fun? If you're in Los Angeles bring up Paul's Twitter feed and play along!

'House Of Cards' Just Delivered The Perfect Response To Its Emmy Loss

If you were watching the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards tonight, you already know that Netflix's House of Cards didn't win. Not long after the broadcast wrapped up, Netflix posted this video, which has House of Cards character Doug Stamper making a phone call...

"Jim, it's Doug Stamper. I thought we had a deal."

While some channels might like to follow up a string of award wins with a fun celebratory video that acknowledges their series' victories, Netflix has always been all about doing things their own way, and that includes having a funny video on deck to point out their non-win for Outstanding Drama Series this year. While House of Cards certainly deserved the spot it earned among the nominees, the excellent political drama had some tough competition and it didn't win the big prize. As you can see, Stamper is not happy about it.

Played by Michael Kelly, House of Cards' Doug Stamper is a character who gets stuff done. And in Netflix's video, it's implied that he had House of Cards' Emmy situation locked down. Apparently not, as House of Cards didn't manage to beat out Breaking Bad for Outstanding Drama Series.

Doug Stamper House of CardsHouse of Cards was nominated a total of 13 times this year, beating out the 9 nominations it earned in 2013. But it came up short in the wins. Last year, the Netflix drama won three Emmys. This year, it secured just one, for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Among the nominations it earned in 2014 but didn't win: Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor (Kevin Spacey), Lead Actress (Robin Wright), Guest Actor (Reg E. Cathey) and Guest Actress (Kate Mara). It was also up for Writing, Directing and Casting, among other categories. You can view the list of Primetime Emmy winners here

While House of Cards may not have come out on top this year, Netflix has more than proven to be a worthy contender at the awards shows. Not only did House of Cards make the list of nominees numerous times, Orange is the New Black scored nearly as many nominations in the comedy categories. The prison-set dramedy missed the Outstanding Comedy Series award -- losing out to Modern Family -- but it did win for Outstanding Casting, as well as Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy (Uzo Aduba) and Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy series. Those three awards were handed out at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. View that list of winners here

House of Cards was renewed for a third season earlier this year, and we expect to see Season 3 on Netflix next year.
