Jon Snow is 'absolutely dead,' second HBO exec says of 'Game of Thrones' casualty

Jon Snow Season 5

Just in case you didn't hear it the first time when HBO's programming president said it, a second executive from the pay channel has come out to settle a hot topic for "Game of Thrones" fans.

“[Jon Snow] is absolutely dead,” HBO's executive vice president of programming, Michael Ellenberg, told a packed convention center in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Thursday.

Various versions of the statement were recorded by those present at the talk via Twitter:

Did you notice that Ellenberg's statement was met with some disbelief?

Photos of Kit Harrington, who played Jon Snow, in the vicinity of the "GOT" set (and possibly other hints) have kept hope of his return alive. Most fans have moved on to accepting the death and on to theories of how he'll return as something undead or brought back to life.

There's even a wacky new theory that's heating up the fandom that extends Jon Snow's existence by giving him a twin— a very "Star Wars"-like wish fulfillment.

And despite that both the "GOT" showrunner and Harrington had said Jon Snow was dead after the season five finale aired, we'll have to wait if there's some other plan for the character when the show returns in spring 2016.

John Oliver's influence on American culture becomes clear after he finds his way into an appeals court opinion

John Oliver

A few weeks ago, John Oliver took his "Last Week Tonight" desk to criticize the lack of rights given to US citizens in the country's territories.

A judge on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals seems to be a fan, as Above the Law points out.

Judge Marsha Berzon just ruled on a case where Guam residents sued the government of Guam over a tax refund program.

Berzon didn't actually agree with Oliver, but she acknowledged his criticism in a footnote.

We do note, however, that the so-called “Insular Cases,” which established a less-than-complete application of the Constitution in some U.S. territories, has been the subject of extensive judicial, academic, and popular criticism. See, e.g., Juan Torruella, The Insular Cases: The Establishment of a Regime of Political Apartheid, 77 Rev. Jur. U.P.R. 1 (2008); Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: U.S. Territories, Youtube (Mar. 8, 2015), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CesHr99ezWE

Because of a Supreme Court ruling over a century ago, Downes v. Bidwell, US citizens in territories like Guam and Puerto Rico aren't guaranteed constitutional rights, and can't vote for president or elect a congressional representative.

"More than 4 million people live in the US territories; more than 98% of them are racial or ethnic minorities," Oliver said. "The more you look into the history of why their voting rights are restricted, the harder it is to justify."

Since he took over the "Daily Show" hosting gig for a summer two years ago and started hosting "Last Week Tonight" on HBO a year later, Oliver has been seen as Jon Stewart's heir apparent.

He's made waves for using his time for exhaustive, in-depth looks into underreported subjects — like US territory rights, civil forfeiture, and online harassment— and making them palatable for larger audiences.

America's biggest civil rights group has a huge problem with Hollywood right now

Hollywood Sign Hero

Abysmal new diversity statistics for the TV industry highlight a big problem that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has with the TV and movie industry.

The American Civil Liberties Union requested in May that federal and state governments investigate the Director's Guild of America — a union representing film and television directors — for “the systemic failure to hire women directors at all levels of the film and television industry."

A new survey from the Director's Guild, which looked at over 3,900 episodes produced in the 2014-2015 television season, found that Caucasian males direct 69% of television episodes, and that 10% of television series have no women or minority directors at all. Furthermore, only 16% of directors were women, and only 18% were of minority ethnicities.

Martha Coolidge, a former president of the DGA, supports the ACLU's call for an investigation of the underemployment of female directors, but told Deadline that the DGA isn't at fault.

“Despite the fact that its members are primarily men, they have put a remarkable amount of effort into representing and promoting women and minority directors," Coolidge told Deadline. "The DGA literally has nothing to do with hiring in this industry."

In their letters to state and federal employment agencies, the ACLU noted that half of students focusing on directing in major film schools are women, yet their employment numbers continue to trail significantly behind men. Based on interviews with 50 female directors, it alleged discriminatory hiring practices are rampant in the movie industry.

Women directors are subjected to discriminatory practices, including recruiting practices that exclude them, failure to hire qualified women directors based on overt sex stereotyping and implicit bias, and the use of screening mechanisms that have the effect of shutting women out ... It is widely known that some employers do not hire women directors. Women have publicly reported being told “we don’t hire women,” or “we tried [hiring a woman] once.”30 More than one award-winning film director reported to us she was told in a meeting that a particular showrunner “doesn’t hire women.” Another director said that producers and studio executives repeatedly told her agent “not to send women” for consideration for particular jobs. A third director was told by a network executive to avoid a show that was not “woman friendly.”

The DGA, for its part, counts only 12% of its members as women, and said it's been advocating for fair hiring practices for years.

"The lack of network and studio action to hire more women and minority directors is deplorable," the DGA said in a statement. "The DGA has been a long-standing advocate pressuring the industry to do the right thing, which is to change their hiring practices and hire more women and minority directors."

'Mythbusters' built a real rotating machine gun to test out the epic final scene in 'Breaking Bad' — here's how it fared

mythbusters breaking bad 3 final

In the final episode of “Breaking Bad,” Walt (Bryan Cranston) gets Jesse (Aaron Paul) out of the clutches of the bad guys by creating an automatic swaying machine gun in the trunk of his car that blows them all away while he and Jesse lay protected on the floor.

In case you don’t remember, this is how it looked

breaking bad gunWell, Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage of "Mythbusters" decided to put Walt’s final showdown to the test.

The duo built the M60 machine gun featured in the scene with the same equipment used on the show. They also used the same material for the wall used in the show to shoot at (with some wooden cutouts behind it representing Walt and the bad guys) to see if the bullets from the gun would actually go through the car, the wall, and hit the cutouts.

"Breaking Bad" creator Vince Gilligan was there to keep the setting authentic.

With the M60 loaded with 200 live rounds of ammunition, the experiment began.

Donald Trump's forgotten but incredible TV and movie cameos from the '90s

Donald Trump The Apprentice

Sure, Donald Trump is known for his colorful run for president, hosting NBC's "The Apprentice" from 2004 to 2015, frequently appearing as a talking head on news shows, or playing himself on "WrestleMania."

But what many have forgotten is that Trump made cameos in a string of '90s TV shows and movies, including "Sex and the City" and "Home Alone 2."

Since Trump's acting seemed to cool off after 2001's "Zoolander" appearance, let's take a walk down memory lane ...

1. "Ghosts Can't Do It" (1989)

In this crime fantasy starring Bo Derek, Trump played himself in a boardroom scene in which he exchanges a few lines with the model turned actress. The role won him a Razzie Award for "worst supporting actor."

Donald Trump Bo Derek GIF
In one incredible line, Trump says: "Be assured, Mrs. Scott, that in this room there are knives sharp enough to cut you to the bone and hearts cold enough to eat yours as hors d'oeuvres."

Bo Derek's character responds by flirtatiously saying to Trump: "You're too pretty to be bad."

"You noticed," Trump says with a smile and this pout that will forever haunt your dreams.

Here's a description of the movie from IMDB: "Elderly Scott kills himself after a heart attack wrecks his body, but then comes back as a ghost and convinces his loving young hot wife Kate to pick and kill a young man in order for Scott to possess his body and be with her again."

Watch Trump's full scene here.

2. "Home Alone 2: Lost In New York" (1992)

As The Huffington Post so perfectly summed up: "Kevin McCallister encounters the future leader of the American top ninja apprentice warriors while wandering through the Plaza Hotel, which Trump had bought a few years prior. McCallister asks for directions to the lobby, to which the tycoon responds, not with 'hell toupee,' but with a rather nice, 'Down the hall and to the left.'"

Roger Ebert facetiously described the scene as "heartwarming" in his 2000 book, "I Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie."

3. "The Little Rascals" (1994)

Trump played "Waldo's Dad" in this classic hit.

4. "The Nanny" (1996)

Trump played himself in one episode of "The Nanny" titled "The Rosie Show." In the episode, Fran suddenly gets famous after giving parenting advice on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show," and Trump becomes one of her fancy new celebrity friends.

Fran begins to introduce Trump to her wealthy boss, Mr. Sheffield, but then suddenly realizes: "All you handsome zillionaires know each other."

5. "Spin City" (1998)

Trump once again played himself in an episode of "Spin City" titled "The Paul Lassiter Story." He exchanged a few lines of dialogue with Michael J. Fox about how quickly the real-estate tycoon finished his latest book.

"I wrote nine chapters in the first day," Trump boasts to Fox.

6. Also in 1998, Trump played himself in Woody Allen's "Celebrity" and a "VIP patron" in the star-studded "Studio 54" movie.

7. "Sex and the City" (1999)

In an episode titled "The Man, the Myth, the Viagra," Trump plays himself having lunch with one of Samantha's potential new love interests.

And just like that, Trump leaves Samantha's suitor to pursue her.

The man even uses Trump's name in his pickup line to Samantha: "Excuse me, I was so distracted by your beauty that I think I just agreed to finance Mr. Trump's next project. You owe me $150 million."

In a voiceover, Sarah Jessica Parker's character Carrie explains: "Samantha, a cosmopolitan, and Donald Trump — you just don't get more New York than that."

Watch the full episode here.

8. "Zoolander" (2001)

"Without Derek Zoolander, male modeling wouldn't be what it is today."

Donald Trump Zoolander
After 2001, Trump's appearances as himself began to dwindle.

But in 2004, he returned to the screen with his own NBC reality show, "The Apprentice," which he only left this summer so that he could focus on campaigning.

Trump reportedly earned $213 million from "The Apprentice" franchise over the years, and the show also earned him two Emmy nods.

NBC and Trump's relationship has soured since he announced his presidential run in mid-June. As a result of controversial statements Trump made regarding Mexican immigration, NBC severed professional ties with him in late June and refused to air his Miss USA Pageant.

Additionally, NBC said it will be moving forward with "Apprentice" without Trump. The network is searching for his replacement.

Everything we know so far about the new Apple TV

Apple TV

Apple just sent out press invitations for its annual fall iPhone event, which will take place on September 9.

Though the limelight is often reserved for new iPhones, it might be shared this time with a new Apple TV.

The last time we saw a new Apple TV was way back in 2012, so we're expecting a lot of rather monumental changes.

Here are some of the most plausible rumors about the next Apple TV upgrade.

It'll have a new sleeker, thinner design.

John Paczkowski of BuzzFeed reports that the new Apple TV design will be "more polished." That could mean that it'll have a sleeker look, with a potentially thinner profile.

This is entirely likely, especially when we consider the size difference between the first Apple TV and the current model, which is a lot smaller and sleeker.

It might come with a new remote with a touchpad.

Back in May of this year, Brian X. Chen of The New York Times reported that the new Apple TV might come with a new remote with a touchpad that would give you a similar way to navigate around the Apple TV as the touchpad on a laptop.

The report suggested that the new remote will still have the two main buttons for the play/pause and menu functions, but that it would be slightly thicker than the current remote.

It might have Siri for voice commands.

Apple's iPhone event invite looks like it could be dropping hints about the new Apple TV.

This helps fortify the BuzzFeed report and several rumors before it suggested that Siri could also be included.

Siri on the new Apple TV may allow you to navigate around the user interface using your voice. For example, you could command the Apple TV to go to the Netflix app without touching the remote.

These are the most popular original shows on Netflix (NFLX)

orange is the new black

The most popular original shows on Netflix are "Orange is the New Black,""House of Cards,""Arrested Development,""Marvel's Daredevil," and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt."

At least, that's according to a recent survey from from RBC Capital Markets.

Analysts and investors have to rely on third-party data like this, do a lot of guesswork, and decrypt the occasional statement from Netflix executives, to figure out roughly how many people actually watch the shows and movies available on the streaming service.

Netflix has long said that because it doesn't rely on advertising, it really has no reason to share any sort of viewership metrics.

But Mark Mahaney, an analyst at RBC, sends out a survey each quarter to more than 1,000 US internet users, and one of the questions it asks is which of the service's original shows have respondents watched.

Here's the results of that survey. The pink bars reflect the percentage of respondents to the most recent survey who reported watching a particular series. The other bars show how respondents replied in previous surveys:

RBC netflix originals survey

57% of respondents to the most recent survey said they've watched "Orange," while 45% said they've watched the political thriller "House of Cards." 29% reported they've watched "Arrested Development," 23% said they viewed Marvel's "Daredevil," while 22% responded that they've watched "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt."

As Mahaney writes in the note accompanying this chart, the viewership of "Kimmy Schmidt" and "Daredevil" are particularly strong considering those series (which are both worth watching) were released in March and April, respectively.

13% of people reported they had watched "Marco Polo," a series that has been panned by critics but which Netflix reportedly spent $90 million on for one season. 11% of respondents said they watched "Lilyhammer," the drama that was canceled last month.

Only 9% reported they watched "Bojack Horseman," the cartoon that stars the voice of pretty much everyone.

BoJack HorsemanAs Re/code's Peter Kafka writes, this data is far from perfect, as it doesn't give us the completion rate for the shows. Just because 57% of people watched at least an episode of "Orange," for example, doesn't mean that anywhere near that number watched the entire season.

I was particularly surprised by the relatively high proportion of people who reported watching "Arrested Development," though it's unclear which season of the show the respondents actually watched. Only the fourth season is a Netflix original, while the first three (which many people argue are better) first aired on Fox.

Netflix is spending hundreds of millions of dollars this year on original programming, investing in it to differentiate itself from increased competition, as well as make the service attractive to people outside of the US. Netflix, which is currently available in more than 50 countries, has said that its goal is to operate in every country in the world by the end of next year.

There are more options than ever to watch TV without actually paying for a cable or satellite subscription and renting expensive hardware each month, and more Americans are choosing to ditch their traditional TV subscriptions in favor of streaming.

HBO and Showtime have both recently launched standalone streaming services, and Amazon and Hulu continue to beef up their services to compete.

A character who died last season on 'Game of Thrones' is still alive in George R.R. Martin's next book

stannis is alive hbo game of thrones

George R.R. Martin has "Game of Thrones" fans buzzing about a character that may not actually be dead. And, sorry, it's not Jon Snow.

During an online Q&A on Martin's Live Journal, a fan asked if Stannis Baratheon (played by Stephen Dillane, whose son, Frank Dillane, currently stars on AMC's "Fear the Walking Dead") is alive.

Stannis, as fans will recall, is the younger brother of Robert Barathenon (Mark Addy) the late king. He decides that he should be the heir to the Iron Throne when he discovers that Joffrey is the result of an incestuous relationship between his mother and her brother and launches the War of the Five Kings.

Brienne kills Stannis Official HBO 2On the season finale, Stannis found himself on the wrong side of Brienne of Tarth's (Gwendoline Christie) sword. Of course, we only saw her swing her sword down on him... no dead body.

OK, so, Martin was asked if Stannis is still alive. His answer: "In my books? Alive, beyond a doubt."

So, it remains to be seen if the show's producers will follow Martin in the decision to bring Stannis back or continue on their own way. It would probably have ramifications for the war over the Iron Throne.

And as E!Online pointed out, it shines a new light on Snow's (Kit Harrington) death, because his decision to take the Night Watch to Winterfell was made after he found out about Stannis' death. It was that decision that incited his men to rebel and kill him.

Perhaps, we'll find out if Stannis' fate follows the books when the show returns in Spring 2016.

It will follow the crew and passengers as they fight for their lives as zombies take over the plane. While AMC has supplemented "The Walking Dead" with online offerings before, this will be the first time a new character will emerge and join a series.

The network has every reason to milk its zombie franchise right now. The first episode of "Fear the Walking Dead," which premiered last Sunday to record numbers, ballooned to 13.3 million viewers and 8.5 million in the 18 to 49-year-old demographic advertisers love most when counting the Live plus three day (L +3) audience.

"Fear the Walking Dead" continues to air Sundays at 9 p.m. It will then be replaced in the timeslot by sixth season of "The Walking Dead" starting Sunday, October 11.

A theory about Phoebe from 'Friends' is ruining the show for the internet

lisa kudrow pheobe friends shocked surprised

For anyone who was a "Friends" devotee, it seemed apparent there was something lovably wrong with Lisa Kudrow's character, Phoebe Buffay.

The beautiful blonde never quite seemed all there in the hit NBC sitcom. She referenced having a strange past multiple times on the show, too.

Phoebe told other cast members at various points during the 10 seasons that her mother was a drug dealer, that she hung out with a group of friends behind a dumpster, and that she had been homeless.

One "Friends" fan took Phoebe's checkered past and turned it into a dark theory about how the series should have ended, and it has gone viral.

The fan, @strnks on Twitter, posted the theory a few days ago and it has gotten attention on publications like Time and Daily Mail. In @strnks' eyes, the show shouldn't have ended with Ross, Rachel, Monica, and the gang walking out of their apartment, leaving the keys on the counter.

It should have ended just with Phoebe sitting in the friends' favorite haunt, Central Perk, staring out the window. In this alternate ending, Phoebe would have been a meth head, creepily staring out the window at five people who are actually friends — Ross, Rachel, Joey, Chandler, and Monica — and daydreaming up the whole 10 seasons, mentally inserting herself into what she assumes their lives are like.

"All 10 seasons were merely her fevered imagination," @strnks writes, "projecting herself into the lives of the others. All she ever wanted was... Friends."

Here it is:

Friends."

Believing that he should "go big or don't go at all," Greenwell, 31, may not give the opposition a chance to get one over on him. Earlier on Season 1 of "Million Dollar Listing: San Francisco," he met his cast mates for the first time and told them that he had bought their internet domain names!

Here's why reality show 'Intervention' has a higher success rate than most rehab programs

A&E's "Intervention," recently aired its 200th episode, isn't just an extremely successful show format — but it's also earned itself a stellar record for having its subjects remain clean after the cameras stop rolling.

"It's just brutally honest in its portrayal of addiction," showrunner Jeff Weaver of GRB Entertainment said of the show's appeal. "I think our viewers can really sense that and respond to it favorably. And as hard as it is to watch, it's also very hard to turn away from."

Have you ever wondered what happened beyond that moment the subjects step into the rehabilitation program? How successful is the show really?

Business Insider worked with the producers of A&E's "Intervention," which has an Emmy win in its pocket and is currently nominated again, to get the statistics on the show's subjects. What they reported back was impressive.

  • Out of a total 276 interventions, 27o subjects (or 98.7%) agreed to go into treatment.
  • Over the life of the show, only six subjects have turned down further treatment.
  • Of the 270 subjects that went on to treatment, 151 (or 55%) remain clean and sober.

intervention chartWeaver and his team are proud of their record for success.

Success rates for treatment centers are hard to ascertain as there's very little legal requirement for centers to report that data. But NPR reports that there's a substantial amount of information regarding AA programs that place their success rate between just 5% to 10%.

"I think we get to send a lot of them off to treatment with a little bit of a head start on evaluating themselves and their lives and what's led them to this low point," the producer said.

The process of the making a TV show definitely adds another layer of self-examination, with frequent interviews with the subject, his family and friends, and omnipresent cameras.

ae intervention 200th episode

"When our subjects say yes to treatment, they've just undergone an intense documentary process where they're asked hard hitting, deeply personal questions about every aspect of their lives," Weaver said.

The success rate of "Intervention" would make it the golden ticket for addicts looking to really beat their illness. That's a double-sided sword for the "Intervention" team.

At any given time, the show will have between 300 to 900 requests to be on the show. Picking subjects is a team effort between GRB Entertainment and A&E staff and executives.

"It's painful, because we know out of the thousands of submissions we get, only a handful will get selected," Weaver said. "It's very tough for us to be the ones that have to make that decision."

For those who do get one of those spots, Weaver revealed what probably got them chosen.

"We strive to pick subjects that will be as brutally honest with us as we are direct about our questions," he offered.

"Intervention" airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on A&E.

miley cyrus VMAs 2015 host

Miley Cyrus started the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards in typical Miley fashion.

After entering the stage on a rainbow colored slide, Miley jumped into her entertaining monologue.

"This is a show that hasn't had a host in the last two years, a tradition they will probably return to after tonight's show," she remarked.

Watch the full monologue below:

She then went into giving the audience a behind-the-scenes look into why her Instagram account is so outrageous as a video came on showing the talents behind her pics, played by comics Andy Samberg ("Brooklyn Nine-Nine") and Ike Barinholtz ("Neighbors").
