Wet Hot American Summer TV

July is fast approaching, so that means there will be a slew of new movies and TV shows heading to Netflix.

This coming month brings the return of Netflix's original show "Bojack Horseman," as well as a slew of other shows, movies, documentaries, and comedy specials.

Check out everything coming to Netflix in July.

Here's what you should check out on Netflix in July:

BoJack Horseman

Bojack Horseman (available 7/17)

Netflix's first animated series had a hilarious, surprisingly moving first season. It stars Will Arnett as a horse who was once Hollywood's biggest sitcom star and is now attempting to make a comeback. The all star voiceover cast also includes Aaron Paul, Alison Brie, Patton Oswalt, Amy Sedaris.

Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp (7/31)

Netflix's latest original series is an adaptation of the 2001 cult classic. With most of the original cast returning, this new "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp" promises to have just as much hilarity and absurdity as the original film.

Let's take a minute to talk about how crazy it is that 'Power Rangers' even exists

power rangers

Twenty years ago this week, "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" premiered in theaters across America. For boys and girls of a certain age, this was a very big deal. "Power Rangers" was huge, premiering in 1993 and immediately making headlines like "The Mighty Nielson Power Rangers" thanks to it's overnight success.

Of course, those news stories would also berate the series for "silly, non-menacing, obviously fake monsters, cheesy production, low-tech special effects and sometimes hokey stories." But it was a hit, because it was all about teens who beat up monsters and pilot giant dinosaur-shaped robots, two things every kid wants to do the second they get out of school (which was, by design, when the series aired).

Power Ranger Zords

But when you consider how it was made, it's absolutely crazy that the "Power Rangers" TV series succeeded to spawn a franchise that's still going strong to this very day, with roughly 20 iterations on the classic formula so far. Or that enough people in charge of various companies saw it and said "Yes, this is a great idea, let's do it! Teenagers with attitude!"

In case you aren't someone who compulsively googles the history of children's television shows, what makes "Power Rangers" an unlikely success story isn't that its premise is absurd (it totally is) but that its production was.

Essentially, what we call "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" was in fact two separate productions. The meat of "Power Rangers" comes from Japanese Super Sentai series — shows about color-coordinated superhero teams using martial arts to take on rubber monsters. What "Power Rangers" did was take footage from these Super Sentai shows, film completely new footage with an American cast and crew, and splice them together to make a half-hour action series for children.

The costumed fight scenes and giant robot confrontations were almost always dubbed Japanese footage, while the "Saved By the Bell" style high school cheesiness was used to weld a crude story arc to each episode and season.

It was the kid's TV equivalent of Frankenstein's Monster, given life by a mad TV executive to become something big enough to spawn a Hollywood movie.

And what a movie.

"Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" is, objectively, terrible. It has terrible acting, terrible special effects, terrible writing and terrible music on its soundtrack.

But "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" is also kind of amazing. Just look at this making-of featurette!

Look at those goofy bird monsters!

Power Rangers goofy bird monstersThose goofy ooze monsters!

Power Rangers goofy ooze monstersThe awful CGI that looks like "Beast Wars" in a miniature city! How excited Jason David Frank (the White Ranger) is to talk about anything! And They Might Be Giants was on the soundtrack!

On its twentieth anniversary, I probably will not watch "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie." But I will definitely think about it a lot. Take a moment to think about it with me.

Lol.

The BBC is cutting 1,000 jobs

tony hall bbc

The BBC announced Thursday it is axing 1,000  jobs in a bid to cut costs.

The number of jobs cut represents 6% of its 16,672-strong licence fee-funded workforce.

In a speech to staff, BBC director general Tony Hall said the corporation hopes to save £50 million a year as a result of the restructure.

The BBC is under growing pressure from the UK's Conservative government to become a "leaner and simpler" operation. The corporation forecasts that it could be facing a £150 million ($234 million) shortfall in income for 2016-17.

The drop in income is largely related to a decrease in people paying the £145.50 ($227) annual licence fee, which the BBC heavily relies on to keep running. People in the UK are required to pay the fee to watch live TV, whether on their TV sets, or via their computers and mobiles. However, as more and more people opt to watch content on-demand and via services such as Netflix, fewer are paying the annual sum. The BBC is currently preparing to renegotiate the licence fee with the government.

In an e-mail to staff, seen by Business Insider (which you can read in full below,) Hall says the BBC is making four big changes.

Firstly, it is merging divisions. As a first step, the BBC's technology, engineering, and digital teams will be merged together. This will affect staff in its public service arm, but also its Worldwide commercial division.

Hall is also seeking to cut out management layers — to a "maximum of seven"— having previously noted that some divisions had up to ten layers between the top and bottom of the organization.

The BBC will also reduce management roles and will be seeking to simplify procedures across its professional and support areas such as marketing, finance, legal, HR, and communications.

Separately on Thursday media regulator Ofcom published its public service broadcasting review. The study — which looked into the BBC, ITV, STV, Channel 4, Channel 5, and S4C — found public service broadcasters "continue to make a significant contribution to UK broadcasting" but noted that a growth in watching content online is "creating challenges" for broadcasters.

ofcom

BBC director general Tony Hall's e-mail to staff:

Dear All,

I care deeply about this organisation – and the people in it. That’s why I wanted to share with you, openly and honestly, some big changes we’re making to make the BBC simpler and leaner.

There are two things going on, which make today’s announcements very necessary.

The first goes back to something I said when I came back here. I said I wanted a simpler organisation. It’s what many of you have told me too – and it requires a different approach.

Secondly, we’re facing a very difficult financial situation. Many of you have worked hard to achieve the savings we’ve made already. I know it’s been hard. But there’s more to do. And, before we do anything else that affects our programmes and services, we have to make sure we’re running the BBC as efficiently as possible.

I’m announcing four things – aiming to do just that.

Merging divisions

We’re looking at the number of divisions we need. As a first step, I’ve asked Ralph Rivera, Matthew Postgate and David Gibbons to bring together our teams in Technology, Engineering and Digital. And, that’s not just in the public service, but across Worldwide too. It’s just a start – and, over the next few months, I’ll be working with our Directors to see what more we can do.

Cutting out layers

We’ve taken a good look at the structures across the BBC. In some places there are ten layers between the top and the bottom of the organisation. I think that’s too many – and, in future, we’ll work to a maximum of seven.

Reducing management roles

I’m a huge believer in strong management – management that’s enabling and supports creativity. But the reality is, a simpler organisation, with fewer divisions and layers, will inevitably require fewer senior decision-makers in all parts of the BBC. I know this is hard – but it’s the right thing to do.

 Simplifying procedures

Finally, we’re looking at how we run our professional and support areas – by which I mean all the teams, doing things as varied as marketing, finance, legal, HR and communications. They do a vital job for us. We’ll be asking how each area should be structured, how we can simplify, and standardise, the ways we work – looking right across the public service and Worldwide.

These changes will save £50million a year. And, you know as well as I do, that many of those savings will be roles that we close. We estimate over a thousand jobs will go.

I recognise this is a very tough message. And, I want to make it clear that even though we’ll inevitably be closing posts, it’s not a reflection of the commitment or hard work of the people doing those jobs.

This is about structural change. It’s about doing the right thing – to deliver maximum value to audiences, in a very challenging financial situation.

I want you to know we’ll handle this decently – and fairly. There’ll be more opportunities to discuss all this today and over the coming weeks. And we’ll keep staff informed throughout, before any final decisions are taken.

Best wishes,

Director-General

The tax is currently applied to the purchase of tickets to sporting events and concerts.

Netflix has confirmed that the tax will added to their subscription cost by September 1.

According to the Tribune story, the city will bring in an estimated $12 million each year and is a recent example of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel attempting to help the city’s budget woes through existing taxes.

hannibal petitions

Sorry, Fannibals. Neither Amazon nor Netflix will be bringing "Hannibal" back from cancelation.

Executive producer Bryan Fuller broke the news on Twitter on Monday night.

"I'M SORRY TO REPORT @amazon AND @netflix HAVE PASSED ON #HANNIBAL S4 BUT WE'RE STILL INVESTIGATING POSSIBILITIES,"Fuller wrote.

Fans have been piling the pressure on the streaming companies since NBC announced the "Silence of the Lambs" prequel series would not move forward beyond the current third season in late-June.

Amazon was considered the best possibility for the drama's resurrection, since it already holds streaming rights to the show. Netflix was a less likely candidate, because the agreement with Amazon "precludes a Netflix component,"Fuller had said.

hannibal grahamThere are other avenues the series can go, such as cable networks and other video companies like Yahoo and Hulu.

While "Hannibal" has never been a ratings barn burner for NBC, it has been a critical favorite. Its airings during the late-spring/summer when ratings needs are lower also allowed the network to give it a break.

The series returned on June 4 for Season 3 and is currently averaging a low .50 in the advertiser-coveted 18-49-year-old demographic and 1.74 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

"Hannibal" was based on characters from the Thomas Harris novel, "Red Dragon."

It starred Hugh Dancy as FBI special agent Will Graham, a crime scene investigator with a special understanding of murderers and psychopaths, and Mad Mikkelsen as Lecter, a forensic psychiatrist with a hunger for human flesh who will become Graham's biggest challenge.

6 reasons comedies are failing on network TV

$

big bang theory

The struggle for successful network TV comedies is real.

TV has been a black hole for successful comedies for at least two seasons now. In the fall 2014-2015 season, "Black-Ish" was the only freshman comedy to survive. Earlier this year, NBC canceled all of its comedies but one (keeping "Undateable" if it shot only live shows). And this fall, the Peacock Network will air only one hour of comedies — something it hasn't done since 1978.

CBS and Fox have had similarly hard times with cancellations for low-rated freshman comedies, such as "Mulaney" and "The McCarthys," as well as three-season vet "The Mindy Project."

"There's a lot of buzz about the [hardships for scripted comedies], and I think it's pretty undeniably an accurate assessment," The Paley Center for Media's television curator, David Bushman, told Business Insider.

So, what's going on? The experts we spoke with say there are several reasons network comedies are suffering. Here are six of them:

The Cosby Show1. It just isn't their time.
"Certainly one argument is that there's a cyclical nature to television and that this is not the first time that sitcoms have been in this position," Bushman said. "Everybody talks about how 'The Cosby Show' rescued sitcoms back in the ‘80s ... 'The Cosby Show''s first year at No. 1 was '85, and if you look at the top 10 in '84, there's one sitcom in the top 10, which was 'Family Ties.' Everything else is a drama. So the year before that, the same thing."

seinfeld22. Networks aren't giving comedies enough time to find their creative sea legs.
"Some of the most successful sitcoms in history, shows like 'Seinfeld' and 'Cheers' and many others, took a while to evolve both creatively and commercially to the point where they became successes," Bushman said. "And, I think certainly we are in a much less patient age now than we were then, and I think there is something to the argument that comedy may take a longer time to find its flow."

Veep mike 23. Targeting broad audiences is getting harder and harder for today's viewers.
"I think it's generational in a lot of ways," Bushman said. "I think when you look at cable you see a lot of comedies that are generally edgier and successful enough to be renewed year after year. Now again, they're not 'Modern Family' and they're not 'Big Bang,' but they must be doing well enough for their networks because they're going on like their fifth, sixth seasons.

"I'm talking about shows like 'Louie' or 'Veep'; 'Broad City' now has become very popular. These shows are successful for their networks, for their platforms. 'Kimmy Schmidt' was just renewed for a second season at Netflix, and NBC wouldn't even put it on the air because they saw that they had nothing to surround it with."

friends nbc4. Hollywood's need to copy successful shows makes for bad copies.
"There was this whole time where the whole urban sitcom that NBC was pioneering back in the day when they had 'Mad About You' and 'Seinfeld' and 'Friends' ... so every network was trying to do it. But the problem is it wasn't working, and it wasn't working because a lot of it is not about formula. It doesn't matter whether the show is about a family or a workplace or whatever. If it's not well written and well cast, then it's not going to succeed no matter what formula you're tapping into."

Sean Hayes The Millers CBS5. Stars don't automatically make a hit sitcom.
"It helps to have somebody who has a following, because that's a built-in audience that at least is going to give it a try, but it's not enough," Bushman said. "If the show is not funny, if the characters are not endearing, if you're not compelled to come back because of the content of a show, then it's not going to work, and we've seen that.

"I'm not making judgment on the shows, but the viewers did," he continued, pointing at failed shows with big stars such as Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Geller's "The Crazy Ones" and Sean Hayes' "The Millers" for CBS, NBC's "The Michael J. Fox Show," and "Mulaney" at Fox.

This fall, we'll find sitcoms with well-known leads including Rob Lowe, John Stamos, Jane Lynch, and Ken Jeong.

chrisley knows best usa6. The definition of comedy has become blurred.
Once again, the networks are just catching up with what cable already knew: Comedy can be found in a lot of different forms. For example, USA calls its family show, "Chrisley Knows Best," a comedy. Others have found comedy in game shows and in one-hour dramedies such as Lifetime's "Devious Maids." NBC may be on to something with its coming Neil Patrick Harris variety show, "Best Time Ever."

"You're seeing kids who have grown up on YouTube content and pranks and laughing at things that are maybe in a different form for them," Tony DiSanto, former MTV programming president and founder of the production studio DiGa, told Business Insider.

"I guess when you think about it, things like 'Jackass' is a comedy. You think about 'Impractical Jokers.' These are probably the things that a lot of people are defining as the comedy that they're watching, and I think that stuff is actually growing and growing an audience and working for people, so I think for me when I look at comedy across all the networks I don't necessarily think comedy is down."

With all these factors working against them, Bushman said, innovation may be the genre's saving grace.

"There's not a lot that's new in terms of sitcoms on," he said. "The really interesting one to me is that NBC is going live with 'Undateable.' You must readjust or adapt to a changing landscape, one thing that you need to do is be innovative, and try new things, and somehow stand out from the crowd, and I think that no matter what happens to 'Undateable' that NBC deserves a tremendous amount of credit for trying."

"Like anything, it's cyclical," DiSanto said. "Somebody will break through with something that's going to be loud and cut through and sort of reinvent the model."

Aziz Ansari recently wrapped six years on NBC's "Parks and Recreation," but the actor-comedian says when it came to pitching his own new show, he "refused" to go to a traditional network.

Aziz AnsariIn April, Netflix picked up Ansari's untitled sitcomordering 10 episodes of the half-hour comedy. Netflix also picked up the 32-year-old's stand-up specials "Aziz Ansari: Live at Madison Square Garden" and "Buried Alive."

Ansari is a big fan of working with the streaming service because, as he recently told Deadline, it's "creative and friendly."

When asked about working in the Netflix model  as opposed to network TV  Ansari explained to Deadline:

It’s great. We didn’t even pitch this to any traditional networks. I kind of refused to do it. I don’t want to work in that environment. So many friends of mine have done that stuff and it just seems like a process that’s not fun. And I think people are able to do it and some people make good shows. But I’m so used to working from a mode of stand-up where it’s like, I write something. I work on it. Audiences think it’s funny. I film it. And then I give it to Netflix, and they put it on. That’s why I was excited to partner with Netflix because they seemed like they were creative and friendly.

Ansari says there are more perks to working with Netflix, too.

There are little things you don’t even think about—there’s no commercials. You don’t have to get an episode to exactly 30 minutes. In editing it’s so much help. When you’re editing a Parks episode, it will be like, “Well, we have a commercial break here so we’ve got to find 40 seconds to cut.” Weird, little tasks like that are just kind of gone. And so this feels like 10 little movies that have different lengths, there’s a through line, there is a serialization, and there’s a payoff.

Jon Snow and Tormund go to Hardhome game of thrones

Every season, "Game of Thrones" manages to top itself with an increasingly breathtaking battle sequence. Season five included a stunning showdown with the White Walkers in "Hardhome." The sequence did not dissapoint.

The Hardhome battle was a visual effects marvel, and one of the highlights of the season.

Along with a video released by HBO last month, El Ranchito Imagen Digital, one of the companies responsible for the show's visual effects, released a very thorough breakdown of the battle, showing how much green screen came in handy.

Here is a shot that lays out the scope of the soldiers:

In reality, there was a lot less people there, and a lot less snow:

A lot of the details were created with the computer. At first, the landscape was a bit more bare bones:

One of the most impressive parts of the scene is watching Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) literally shatter a much-feared White Walker with one blow:

"Simpsons" fans can let out a collective sigh of relief.

Talented voice actor Harry Shearer has changed his mind and will be returning to the long-running animated series after all, Fox announced on Tuesday in a press release.

Shearer has signed a deal to return for two more seasons, the 27th and 28th, with an option for two more seasons after that. Shearer will be paid $300,000 per episode, according to THR.

This is the same renewal deal signed by his colleagues Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, and Hank Azaria.

Back in May, Shearer announced on Twitter that he would be leaving the series. At the time, he cited a desire to "do other work." Shearer is the voice behind numerous characters on "The Simpsons," including Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner, and Mr. Burns.

The two-year extension on the series will bring the show to 625 episodes.

Still the backbone of Fox's animation block on Sundays, the Emmy-winning animated series averaged 4.8 million viewers in live plus same day ratings and increased to 7.6 million viewers across all platforms last season.

MTV makes students uncomfortable with questions about race in new 'White People' trailer

mtv white people trailer 2

MTV explores the position Caucasians find themselves in when discussing race and privilege on its upcoming documentary special, "White People."

How do white people feel when confronted with questions of race and privilege? After watching the first trailer, the short answer would be: They feel pretty uncomfortable.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Jose Antonio Vargas, traveled the United States to discuss the topics facing white millennials from a variety of backgrounds. The topics he discussed with them spanned from white privilege, affirmative action, to racial identity.

During the course of the trailer, we see individuals who feel a great amount of discomfort speaking openly about race. It's as if they're damned if they do speak and damned if they don't. The subjects say things like “I’m trying to be careful," and “I don’t want to offend people,” as well as “I don’t want to say the wrong thing.”

The 'Doctor Who' and 'Sherlock' showrunner totally wants to do a crossover of the two shows

Fans aren't the only ones who would love to see the Doctor and Sherlock on screen together.

"Doctor Who" and "Sherlock" showrunner, writer, and producer Steven Moffat would love to see a crossover between the two beloved characters happen, too.

During a press preview for the upcoming "LEGO Dimensions" video game, where Moffat and "Doctor Who" series stars Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman were present, the first bit of "Doctor Who" footage from the upcoming September release was shown.

The game allows players to interact with multiple characters from different franchise all in their respective worlds.

If that sounds confusing, it's not. In theory, Batman and Doctor Who, Gandalf ("Lord of the Rings"), and Scooby Doo could all team up in an adventure.

At the event, Moffat was asked if he'd like to see the Doctor team up with any other detectives, alluding to the BBC's "Sherlock."

"Seeing the 'Doctor Who' characters and Batman together, do you get any ideas about any other detectives you want the Doctor to meet maybe soon?" Moffatt was asked.

Instead of shying away, Moffat responded positively.

"Talk to all the rest, I'm fine with it," Moffat said. "My wife, [Mark] Gatiss, [Benedict] Cumberbatch, [Martin] Freeman — I'm fine with it ... I say yes. Yes to them!"

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman of course star on the equally popular Sherlock Holmes series "Sherlock" on BBC.

Unfortunately no collaboration between the two series is currently in the works.

The ninth season of "Doctor Who" returns to BBC this fall.

"Sherlock" will return to TV in 2016.

Maybe one day the two worlds will collide on screen.

San Diego Comic-Con kicks off Thursday, with the casts of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2,""Doctor Who," and more making appearances.

We stopped by the convention center on preview day and discovered devoted fans camped out overnight in order to snag seats in the famed Hall Hthe biggest venue at Comic-Con where the biggest television and movie panels take place.

san diego comic con downtown interactive experiences 0174

Entrance to Hall H is no small feat. The Daily Dot reported that in previous years, the line stretched a mile long. Tents are set up to protect attendees from weather conditions and the blazing sun.

Once you're in Hall H, you're in. The room doesn't empty in between panels (though it does empty at the end of each day).

So if you want to guarantee a seat at the "Lucasfilm" panel (aka the "Star Wars" panel) at 5:30 p.m. Friday evening, you have to get in early and sit through the five previous panels that day.

Still, queuing up outside overnight has become a rite of passage for fans.

One such fan is Yvonne, 20, a San Francisco State University student. She and her boyfriend were first in line for Hall H.

The couple arrived Tuesday at noon in order to secure spots for the "Doctor Who" panel on Thursday at 2:15 p.m. They brought blankets, sunscreen, books, their cosplay (or role-playing) outfits, cards, and a memory foam pillow.

By the time we chatted with Yvonne on Wednesday afternoon, the battery in her Kindle died and ants invaded her pretzel jar.

Pedestrian after pedestrian approached to ask what she was in line for. Eventually, a member of the queue hung this sign.

But for Yvonne and other diehard fans, the chance to see the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and or Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), in person is an opportunity not to be missed.

May the seating odds be ever in their favor.

Over 130,000 of these huge oversized bags are being giving out to fans at Comic-Con

When you head to San Diego Comic-Con you're most likely to see fans dressed up in cosplay, people waiting in lines to get into some of the most anticipated panels of the weekend, and giant oversized bags sporting the faces and logos of some big TV shows.

You literally cannot turn your head without seeing a person wearing them.

sdcc 2015 guests

The bags are given out to everyone to store their Comic-Con swag as they pick up badges to gain access to the convention floor.

This year Warner Bros. TV is giving out over 130,000 bags to Comic-Con attendees throughout the weekend.

Each bag has one of over a dozen designs from different WB TV series ranging from "Arrow" and "The Flash," to the new "Supergirl" series.

Here's the thing though.

You don't get to pick the bag you get.

You're given one at random. And when you get it, it's folded up into a small rectangle so that you have to unfold it a few times to see what design awaits you.

Obviously, some designs are cooler than others. (Come on, you know you rather have an Arrow or Gotham bag over a Supernatural one —especially if you're a guy.)

The entire experience is like waiting to see what toy is at the bottom of your Cracker Jack box. It could be awesome ... or it could be a temporary tattoo sticker.

It's more than likely you're not going to get the bag your heart desires.

We were pleasantly surprised when we saw that our bag design wasn't among the ones previously announced by Warner Bros.' TV.

It's a "Batman v Superman" one that we quickly heard people were wanting to trade others for. (We were fast to book out of there.)

It's definitely going to be the most sought-after one at the Con, especially with news expected on the film Saturday during Warner Bros. big Hall H panel.

The saddest show on TV is a comedy about a talking horse

$

BoJack Horseman

The saddest show on television is not a drama but rather a half-hour animated comedy.

"BoJack Horseman," which is ramping up for its second season on Netflix, has gained a loyal following, but it still remains television's best kept secret.

"BoJack Horseman" was the best show of 2014. I stand by that claim, and believe that "BoJack" could even take that spot again in a very crowded field of contenders.

BoJack HorsemanThe animated series takes place in a version of Hollywood inhabited by both humans and anthropomorphic animals. BoJack Horseman (Will Arnett) is a horse who was also the star of 1990s sitcom "Horsin' Around." Now, BoJack is a burned-out, boozing has-been who lives in a big empty mansion with no one but Todd (Aaron Paul) who calls BoJack's couch home.

Season one saw BoJack hit some incredible lows.

BoJack Horseman Season 2After his memoir, ghost-written by Diane (Alison Brie) becomes a hit, BoJack is once again in the public spotlight and now up for his dream role as Secretariat. Thus, season two starts on a more optimistic note.

Animation and serialization often don't go hand-in-hand. Some of the greatest animated shows of all time, from "The Simpsons" to "South Park," typically start over every episode. Therefore, Homer can accidently destroy Springfield and Kenny can die in every episode and come back just fine. However, if BoJack says something heartless and terrible to Diane (which happened a lot during season one), she will still be mad at him in the next episode.

"BoJack" will take you by surprise. For anybody who has ever gotten a kick out of the idea of animals acting like humans, then "BoJack" is paradise. There is no science involved, but this show is very detailed about what it would be like if animals acted like humans.

BoJack HorsemanAnd the human characters are equally ridiculous. In season one, BoJack's agent Princess Carolyn (Amy Sedaris) dates Vincent Adultman, who is clearly three small children stacked on top of each other in a trench coat. However, Princess Carolyn is so used to taking care of the immature BoJack that she has no idea what an actual adult male behaves like. Creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg has also stated that this character represents his worldview that nobody really knows what they are doing, and all adults might as well be tall children.

The show's goofiness hides its dark, emotional heart. BoJack is one of the most honest portrayals of depression and loneliness that I can think of. In a season one episode, BoJack sincerely asks a crowd of people whether or not he is a bad person and it is chilling. Like any confident comedy, "BoJack Horseman" knows that you don't need constant jokes in order to be great.

BoJack HorsemanSeason two continues to take some bold storytelling risks and because it doesn't have to introduce an entire world, it gets off to an even stronger start than season one. BoJack has finally landed his dream role and he might have even found love, but given that this is "BoJack Horseman," that doesn't mean he is happy.

BoJack HorsemanJust a few episodes into season two and the show has decided to slow down its main storyline in favor of character development. So far, this has been a fantastic success.

One standalone episode, which is a series of vignettes centered around the show's three main romances, is unlike anything I've seen in an animated show. In another great example of how the show uses silly to bring out serious, Todd spends an entire episode trying to save a chicken from the slaughterhouse. What seems like another divergent Todd caper turns into a character study of Todd trying to find his purpose in life.

Like many sitcoms, "BoJack Horseman" isn't immune to having one character who doesn't quite fit in to the rest of the story. However, "BoJack" is also smart enough to comment on this.

BoJack HorsemanBoJack HorsemanOh yes, "BoJack Horseman" is still a comedy, and one that is perfectly tailored for Netflix. Like "Arrested Development" (also starring Will Arnett), it is layered with jokes.

It is the kind of show that is meant to be paused, rewound, and rewatched over and over again. It is fun enough trying to figure out which celebrity voiced who when the names pop up in the opening credits (there is a brief one this season that has to be seen to be believed). Let's just say that "BoJack Horseman" is the only show I've ever watched with a talking horse that I have built a serious emotional bond with.

All 12 episodes of season two of "BoJack Horseman" will be on Netflix on July 17.

Stephen Colbert wanted to leave 'The Colbert Report' even before getting the Letterman gig

On Wednesday's episode of "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee," Stephen Colbert revealed that he had plans to end "The Colbert Report" before he even knew if he'd have a chance at David Letterman's "Late Show" hosting gig.

Talking to Jerry Seinfeld, Colbert explained how his interest in playing a faux-conservative pundit on "The Colbert Report" had waned well before the show's final month of production in December 2014.

colbert comedians in cars"I was ready to stop," Colbert said. "I was going to stop whether or not [I got the CBS gig] — the Letterman thing fell in my lap."

Over the course of the 17-minute episode, Colbert and Seinfeld joked about a variety of topics (mainly Colbert's beard) and discussed the upcoming late-night landscape for the fall season.

colbert comedians in cars seinfeldSeinfeld, who notoriously hates late-night talk shows, jokingly noted that his show ("Comedians in Cars") makes for a much easier experience for his guests, relative to the difficult process a comedian must go through to appear on something like Colbert's "Late Show."

"To do a guest appearance on your show, it's no f---ing fun," Seinfeld said. "When I come on your show, I'm going to do a stand-up set. You know how long it's going to take me to put that together? So you cannot compare the pain in the ass of doing your show to the joy and pleasure of doing mine."

Alluding to the infamous history of heated conflicts in late-night television — between Jay Leno, Letterman and, later, Conan O'Brien — Colbert was quick to assuage any possibility of conflict with "Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon.

"I think nothing would be more boring than a late-night war," Colbert said, explaining that he and Fallon are actually close friends and recently went out drinking together to discuss the upcoming late-night season.

Conflict or not, Colbert and his "Late Show" team have been making a highly visible effort to match the viral sensation of Fallon's "Tonight Show"— a social media force that played a large role in Letterman's decision to leave his CBS post. Colbert's most recent video found the new "Late Show" host parodying the panic surrounding Wednesday's NYSE shutdown.

"The Walking Dead" has a reputation for scaring the pants off fans at its San Diego Comic-Con booth each year.

This year, AMC did not disappoint.

After circling the interactive booth once, I decided, "Nope, no way am I going inside that thing."

Two words should stir haunting memories for fans of the show: Revolving door.

Warning: Season 5 spoilers ahead.

Yes, AMC re-created the infamous season 5, episode 14, scene in which Noah (Tyler James Williams) meets his demise.

In the episode, Noah and Glen (Steven Yeun) get trapped in a wedge of a revolving door, opposite Nicholas (Michael Traynor) and a herd of bloodthirsty zombies.

When a fearful Nicholas forces his way out, the door turns, exposing his companions to the walkers. They devour Noah instantly, marking yet another shocking, painful death in the series.

'House of Cards' creator thinks Hillary Clinton is closest to a real life Claire Underwood

hillary clinton claire underwood

It doesn't seem likely that Hillary Clinton would have gotten UK's "House of Cards" creator Lord Michael Dobbs' vote if her were able to cast a ballot in US elections.

Dobbs believes Clinton most resembles a real life Claire Underwood (Robyn Wright), the conniving and politically ambitious wife of president Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) on Netflix's adaptation of Dobbs' "House of Cards."

“[Hillary Clinton] is a political figure in her own right – behind the scenes, but now increasingly in front of the scenes." Dobbs told Buzzfeed of the similarities to Claire. "That is much more of a Claire character than, for instance, Cherie [Blair], who as far as I’m aware didn’t become actively aware in politics as such.”

lord dobbsDobbs, who wrote the novel "House of Cards" after serving as an advisor to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, has a healthy obsession of Clinton.

“I’m fascinated by Hillary, of course, because she comes with so much baggage,” he told the online site. “That baggage is her strength but also her vulnerability. We just have to wait and see where the balance lies on that. Though it is bizarre that the system that was bred out of [rejection of a King] has produced the Bushes, the Kennedys, the Clintons, the Roosevelts….”

Dobbs' TV version of "House of Cards" ended after just four one-hour episodes aired on BBC in 1990. Netflix's adaptation will return with its fourth season next year.
