Mad Men s7 13 3Warning: BIG spoiler ahead

With only two episode left of AMC’s “Mad Men,” many were expecting something substantial to happen on Sunday night’s episode to get us ready for the show’s finale next week, and fans weren’t disappointed.

One of the storylines on the show last night was that Betty Draper has been diagnosed with lung cancer. We hear the news while the doctor talks to Betty’s husband, Henry Francis (Christopher Stanley), that it is terminal and that she has less than a year to live, unless she begins treatment which may extend her life for another year.

Back to school taking psychology classes, Betty was walking up the stairs in one of the buildings on campus, looking a little tired, when she lost her footing and embarrassingly slipped and fell on the stairs. At the doctor’s office, she learned she has a broken rib, but they also found a tumor spreading rapidly.

Mad Men s7 13 5Not letting the moment get to her, Betty puts on a brave face as she divulges to Henry that she will not be undergoing the treatment needed to extend her life that the doctor recommends.

Mad Men s7 13 7Henry goes to Sally (Kiernan Shipka) at her school to tell her the news — though Betty asked him not to tell the kids — and bring her home in hopes she will convince Betty to reconsider her decision.

Mad Men s7 13 6But Betty doesn’t concede. Telling Sally that she saw her mother die in a similar way and won’t allow Sally and the other kids see her go through that. Also stating that, “she is not a quitter.”

She gives Sally an envelope that holds all the necessary arrangements following her death.

Mad Men s7 13 10While Sally reads it we hear its contents told in a voiceover of Betty. The letter entails where she wants to be laid to rest, for Sally to remind the funeral home how she likes to wear her hair, the dress she wants to be buried in.

Mad Men s7 13 12The news about Betty sent shockwaves through the Internet.

Fans of actress January Jones were especially moved Sunday night, and they began sending their condolences to her Instagram account in which Jones posted a picture of Betty in last night’s episode.

Needless to say, some folks who didn’t watch yet were not happy receiving the spoiler.

David Duchovney X Files

Fox has revealed its plans for its limited series revival of "The X-Files."

It will premiere with a two-night event starting Sunday, Jan. 24 at 10 p.m. following the NFC Championship Game and then continue on Monday, Jan. 24 at 10 p.m. After that, it will air on Mondays through the sixth and final episode.

Starting production in June, "The X-Files" revival reunites creator Chris Carter and stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson in the roles of FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, respectively.

"We're very excited about this," Fox's co-CEO and co-chairman Dana Walden said on a press call Monday. "It's going to be a huge reward for fans of this legendary show. It's taken us a very long time to get these three back together."

Walden laid out the format for the upcoming episodes and promised that longtime fans of the series won't be disappointed, although she admitted that she has been somewhat kept in the dark by the show's creator, as well.

"Have you ever met Chris Carter? Because he doesn't tell us a lot," Walden joked. "I think you will see a combination of episodes that if you were a loyal fan and became familiar with the process of mixing standalone and deeper mythology episodes. Everyone will be happy with what he's got planned."

x filesOne reporter asked why Fox decided to use the slot after the football game on "The X-Files" and airing it on two days rather than using that Sunday slot on a show that didn't come with its own fanbase.

"We thought a lot about how to event-ize bringing this show back from a scheduling perspective," she said. "We've got a lot going on midseason on our schedule and it felt like the best way to capitalize on all the opportunities with something like 'The X-Files,' which is so timely and anticipated that fans have been literally clamoring for a decade."

The decision came down to a desire to maximize opportunities to watch "The X-Files," as well as use it on Mondays to launch its upcoming DC Comics-inspired drama "Lucifer," which stars Tom Ellis as the original fallen angel who grows bored and unhappy in Hell and takes refuge in Los Angeles, where he uses his gift of persuasion to punish bad guys.

"It felt like a win any way you looked at it," Walden said.

“The X-Files” originally aired from 1993-2002 on Fox, spanning nine seasons and 202 episodes. It also lived on in two feature films in 1998 and 2008.

‘SNL’ got tons of praise for a sketch this weekend — but it’s almost identical to a Canadian comedy bit from January

draw muhammad snl

"Saturday Night Live" aired a sketch this weekend that initially received tons of praise.

Titled "Draw Muhammad," the bit was a riff on "Pictionary" or "Win, Lose or Draw," in which contestants must sketch a word or phrase.

In the "SNL" sketch, Bobby Moynihan's character receives the "Trend Setters" category and is given the phrase, "The Prophet Muhammad."

After two gunmen opened fire on an anti-Muslim "Draw Muhammad" cartoon contest art show in Texas last week, Moynihan's character is especially reluctant to draw the controversial figure.

Draw Muhammad GIF
After Moynihan's character says "I can't draw it," Reese Witherspoon, who hosted this weekend's show and played Moynihan's wife, guesses the correct answer  "The Prophet Muhammad." The couple walk away with a $1 million prize.

The bit was praised on social media.

Salon wrote that the show "brilliantly tackled the fear of drawing Muhammad." Comedian and former "SNL" staffer Dean Obeidallah called the bit "a great comedy sketch that raises an important issue about freedom for expression and the fear some Americans have about drawing the Prophet Mohammed."

But by Monday, the Internet was quick to call out SNL's "Draw Muhammad" sketch  a bit that originated on Canadian comedy show, "This Hour Has 22 Minutes."

The Canadian sketch, which first aired in January, has an identical premise to the "SNL" bit.

Both contestants have $1 million at stake, both refuse to draw Muhammad, and then both wives guess the correct answer after their husbands refuse to draw Muhammad.

Draw Muhammad GIF
"22 Minutes" comedian Shaun Majumder, who is featured in the original sketch, tweeted about the copy cat bit.

"Wow if only we could steal some of their budget," tweeted the 43-year-old comedian, with the hashtag "GreatMindsThinkAlike."

"I think both pieces are important satirical comedy with two different audiences," he continued.

This isn't the first time "Saturday Night Live" has been accused of plagiarism.

There's more '24' in the works at Fox

jack bauer 24 kiefer sutherland

You may not have seen the last of Jack Bauer.

Fox is apparently working on a new adventure for the indestructible spy played by Kiefer Sutherland.

"We have been developing another version of '24' but it's still fairly early in the development process," Fox's co-CEO and co-chairman Gary Newman told reporters on a call Monday. "There's really nothing we can tell you at this time other than we are working on something."

It's unclear whether the network is planning another run of episodes or a TV movie, such as the one that aired between the sixth and seventh seasons of the show in 2008.

The last installment of "24" aired over 12 episodes during Spring 2014 on Fox. Considered the show's ninth season, "Live Another Day" took place four years after Season 8. We met Jack Bauer as he was tracking the activities of Counter Terrorist Unit analyst Chloe O'Brian's (Mary Lynn Rajskub) group while living in exile. Jack resurfaces when he hears of an imminent attempt on now President James Heller's (William Devane) life.

"Live Another Day" did moderately well for Fox, earning an average 1.8 rating with Adults aged 18-49, the demographic most sought after by advertisers, and 6.3 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

New chapter or not, "24" was already acknowledged as the longest-running espionage-themed TV series ever after its eighth season, surpassing "Mission Impossible,""The Avengers" and "Alias."

Rob Lowe is starring in two series on different networks — here's how he's able to do both

Rob Lowe

It's raining Rob Lowe.

Both Fox and NBC have greenlit series starring the popular actor, which led some to wonder how he could carry off both shows.

First on Sunday, NBC announced that it had greenlit "You, Me, and the End of the World." The one-hour comedic drama is a co-production with UK's Working Title Television. It features Lowe as a rebellious priest who crosses paths with an eclectic group of people on their way to an underground bunker as a comet is about to collide with Earth.

nbc YouMeEnd the world new shows 2015And then on Monday, Fox revealed that it had greenlit "The Grinder," on which Lowe plays an actor whose legal series was just canceled, but then tries to parlay the skills he learned on the show into actually practicing law in his hometown.

rob lowe grinder pilot fox new shows 2015
"The Grinder" is set to air Tuesdays this fall, while NBC has yet to name a premiere date for its Lowe show, which will also air in Europe, though no premiere date is set there as well.

A reporter asked about the possible conflict during an executive press call with Fox on Monday. The answer is actually very simple.

"[NBC's] show has wrapped production," Fox's co-CEO and co-chairman Dana Walden cleared up. "I believe it's a limited series event and he's done his obligation. He's in first position to 'The Grinder.'"

In this case, both networks get off scot-free. But it isn't always such a clean exchange when an actor stars on two or more projects during pilot season. In those cases, the actor indicates one project in first position and then another in second. In the case that both projects move forward, the actor is contractually obligated to stick with the project in first position.

We saw this conflict go down with Damon Wayans Jr. when he appeared on Fox's "New Girl" pilot and then ABC renewed "Happy Endings." He had to leave "New Girl," because it was in second position.

NBC and Fox were able to escape losing Rob Lowe, but it's currently in another casting conflict. Apparently, "Being Human" star Meaghan Rath appears on NBC's newly ordered comedy pilot "People Are Talking," but she also appears on Fox's new comedy "The Guide to Surviving Life.""Guide" is in first position for the actress, which means that NBC will most likely have to recast Ruth's role.

new shows 2015 main

It's out with the old and in with the new for network television.

The broadcast networks are unveiling their new series for the 2015-2016 seasons this week in an annual event called Upfronts.

At Upfronts, the networks present their fall schedules and upcoming new shows to advertisers in order to entice them to spend their commercial dollars.

This year's fleet of new shows have several name actors attached, including Rob Lowe, John Stamos, Neil Patrick Harris, and even Muppets.

There are also a few shows inspired by big screen flicks, such as Fox's "Minority Report" and ABC's "Uncle Buck" (this time with a black cast). And, of course, comics-inspired shows are still going strong with CBS's "Supergirl," The CW's "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" and Fox's "Lucifer" among this year's batch of new shows.

On Monday, Fox announced that the coming 15th season of "American Idol" would be its last.

The show's host, Ryan Seacrest, said after the news that "American Idol" had "been a big part of my life for so long, it's frankly hard to imagine it without it."

But while Seacrest has been a part of the show for its entire run, his season one cohost, Brian Dunkleman, wasn't as lucky.

Dunkleman left the show after its initial season in 2002 to pursue stand-up comedy and acting. Meanwhile, "Idol" went on to become one of the most successful TV shows of all time and made Seacrest a millionaire many times over.

Ryan Seacrest Brian DunkelmanAfter news of the show's cancelation on Monday, Dunkleman sarcastically tweeted to his nearly 3,000 followers:

The internet was thrilled with Dunkleman's sense of humor about the situation, and he received quite the response:

In his Twitter bio, Dunkleman refers to himself as a "Television history footnote."

Brian Dunkelman american idolDunkleman, now 43, acknowledged during a 2011 interview on the "Joy Behar Show" that leaving "Idol" may not have been his smartest move. "Listen, I'd like to say I was just young and stupid, but the truth is, I really wasn't that young," he said. "I mean listen, I was a comedian and an actor … What I wanted to do with my life is be an actor and that's going great," he joked while giving the thumbs-up.

brian dunkelmanSince "Idol," Dunkleman has appeared in bit roles on TV and in movies, participated in "Celebrity Fit Club," and performs stand-up comedy in Los Angeles, where he lives with his family.

In Fox's press call announcing the cancelation on Monday, network execs promised the show's final season would be full of "surprises we can have for the fans to make it feel special."

What kinds of surprises? Fox is still in discussions, but co-chairman and co-CEO Dana Walden said former show judges had already expressed interest in making appearances during the final season. When Dunkleman was suggested by a reporter on the call, Walden responded: "Yes! Where's Brian nowadays? If you give me his number, I will call and invite him."

Dunkleman regularly jokes on Twitter about his time on "Idol":

csi cbs

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" has been canceled after 15 seasons, CBS said in a press release on Wednesday.

That's the bad news for fans of the long-running police drama.

The good news is that CBS is giving the show a two-hour television movie to wrap up its storylines. It will air on Sunday, Sept. 27 with all the original cast members set to return, including William Petersen and Marg Helgenberger.

In further good news, "CSI" star Ted Danson will continue his role as D.B. Russell on the sophomore season of "CSI: Cyber," the franchise's only remaining series.

"CSI" had been on the cancelation watch, including Business Insider's list of shows heading to cancelation, after the series saw its ratings decline over the past season. It went from an average 11.9 million viewers for Season 14 to just 8.3 million for Season 15, according to Nielsen ratings.

Additionally, CBS cut Season 15's episode count from 22 episodes to 18 to make room for new series, the first time "CSI" had ever aired a shortened season.

Produced by CBS Television Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Television, “CSI” starred Danson, Elisabeth Shue, George Eads, Jorja Fox, Eric Szmanda, Robert David Hall, David Berman, Wallace Langham, Elisabeth Harnois and Jon Wellner.

The first trailer for CBS' anticipated "Supergirl" is here.

The series, starring Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, will premiere on the network Mondays this fall at 8 p.m. EST.

Here’s the synopsis via CBS:

Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents’ help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later at 24, Kara lives in National City assisting media mogul and fierce taskmaster Cat Grant (Golden Globe Award winner Calista Flockhart), who just hired the Daily Planet’s former photographer, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), as her new art director. However, Kara’s days of keeping her talents a secret are over when Hank Henshaw (David Harewood), head of a super-secret agency where her sister also works, enlists her to help them protect the citizens of National City from sinister threats. Though Kara will need to find a way to manage her newfound empowerment with her very human relationships, her heart soars as she takes to the skies as Supergirl to fight crime.

The trailer makes a lot of references to Supergirl's famous cousin, the Man of Steel, but it's not clear whether the series will attempt to connect with Warner Bros.' DC cinematic universe at all.

A perfect snapshot of how just 12 actors play 126 characters on 'The Simpsons'

It's pretty safe to say that "The Simpsons," after hundreds of episodes and nearly three decades on the air, is the most successful cartoon show ever to hit television. It's also the longest-running.

Matt Groening, the show's creator, is at the center of it all. He has been executive producer for the show's entire run, along with James L. Brooks.

But even more visible are the actors who play these beloved characters. And it's not all about Homer, Bart, and Lisa. The Simpsons universe is incredibly vast.

And we just learned that one of the biggest actors of "The Simpsons," Harry Shearer, is leaving the show.

The folks at Dadaviz recently put together this awesome infographic that breaks down which voice actors play which characters on the show — and it may blow your mind a little bit.

Why the director of 'Thought Crimes' thinks we should all be more careful about what we say online

$

Erin Carr Thought CrimesHBO's newest documentary "Thought Crimes" tells the story about how an addiction to dark fetish sites led Gilberto Valle to eventually be labeled by the media as the "Cannibal Cop."

His cannibalistic conversations with others were interpreted by some as fantasies and by others as an actual diabolical plot he was planning to carry out.

As a result, Valle lost his job with the NYPD and spent a year in prison

The documentary brings to light the important issue of monitoring what we say in the 21st century both in online forums and across social media platforms.

"Over the last couple years we've just seen people ... their whole reputations taken down because of something really silly or ignorant or terrible that they had posted," Erin Lee Carr, the director "Thought Crimes" told Business Insider.

Justine Sacco lost her job at IAC after a tasteless joke she made became a trending topic on Twitter. The aftermath of this ordeal was chronicled in a lengthy New York Times profile. More recently, Chad Shanks, the digital communications manager of the Houston Rockets, lost his job over a tweet that seemed to imply violence.

thought crimes cannibal cop hbo

Carr herself explains she hasn't run into these kinds of troubles.

"I grew up kind of in an internet family," Carr said, "we were on the internet a lot and so I feel like I was coached from an early age about what's okay and what's not okay."

Still, she feels the need to be cautious whenever she goes online. Carr has over 10,000 tweets, and before any of them go public, she asks herself, "Could this come back at me in a certain way?"

"I think you really have to be careful about the line of self-censorship and being cautious and I think that is a line that I remain hesitantly cognizant of but need to keep thinking about." Carr said.

This reflects on the central debate of the Cannibal Cop case, in which it was nearly impossible to determine whether this was somebody letting out his inner-demons, or somebody who seriously wanted to commit a crime. The case has even been reopened, as a federal prosecutor has requested to reinstate the kidnapping conspiracy conviction against Valle.

Thought Crimes Gilberto Valle

Working on "Thought Crimes" has made Carr a bit more careful about what she shares, but that she won't stop tweeting anytime soon.

"I would say I'm more cautious now and I was very careful about the way I talked." Carr said. "I've spent the last year and a half looking at this really dark subject matter and that definitely affected me. But I don't know, I don't know if it changed me."

Valle's story isn't the last time Carr will examine how the internet affects us. She has a development deal with HBO and is currently "working on similar stories in the internet true crime space."

Netflix is not completely ruling out broadcasting live sports (NFLX)

“Never say never.”

That was the response Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s content boss, gave to the question about whether the world’s largest subscription streaming service will ever stream live sports.

It’s a question that Netflix executives have had to answer many times before, and they’ve repeatedly said that sports, which are, of course, best viewed live, don’t fit with Netflix’s watch-anytime model.

Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, emphasized that point again on Wednesday at a conference hosted by MoffettNathanson, a media and telecommunications research firm.

But he also didn’t completely rule out the proposition.

“I will never say never, but I would say that where we sit today I don’t think the on-demandness to sports is enough of an addition to the value proposition to change,” Sarandos said, according to a webcast of the event. “I think the leagues have tremendous leverage in those deals, so it’s not like we’re going to get in and de-leverage the leagues.”

Sarandos said the prospect of paying huge sums for rights to live sports programming, which can be very, very expensive, “doesn’t get [him] that excited.”

“Not to say that it wouldn’t someday down the road someday make sense,” Sarandos continued. “Today I think that there’s lots of growth in what we’re doing.”

ted sarandos orange is new black castTV ratings are down, Americans are watching less TV, and some cable and satellite subscribers are “cutting the cord," choosing instead to get their video entertainment from streaming services like Netflix, Dish’s Sling TV, HBO Now, and Hulu, among others.

But live sports are one of the few things people still can't miss on so-called “linear” TV -- the Super Bowl and NCAA football championship game broke viewership records, while March Madness had its highest TV viewership in 22 years

People can also pay sports leagues directly to stream games. Major League Baseball has for years streamed baseball games through MLB.TV, and NBA fans can also sign up for a streaming service from the NBA.

The NFL is also planning to stream a Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars game on YouTube this fall.

cw dcs legends of tomorrow

Heroes, villains, epic battles and time travel — That's what fans can expect from The CW's "Arrow"-"Flash" spinoff "DC's Legends of Tomorrow."

The network released the first trailer from the spinoff on Thursday and it does a pretty thorough job of explaining the show's premise  even if you're not caught up on the happenings of "Arrow" and "Flash."

A motley crew of super heroes are brought together by Arrow (Stephen Amell) and Flash (Grant Gustin) to face the greatest threat the world has ever experienced. They'll be led by a man from the future, Rip Hunter ("Doctor Who's" Arthur Darvill). Although it doesn't look like it at first, the crew will actually become a team and as the show's title suggests "legends."

It also stars Victor Garber (“Alias”); Brandon Routh (“Superman Returns”); Caity Lotz (“Arrow”); Ciarra Renee (“Pippin”); Franz Drameh (“Edge of Tomorrow”), and "Prison Break" alums Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller.

"DC's Legends of Tomorrow" will premiere in the midseason on The CW.

6 things you need to know before Sunday's final episode of 'Mad Men'

mad men donWarning: Spoilers ahead (if you’re not caught up on season 7)

After seven seasons on the air, this Sunday marks the final episode of AMC's hit show "Mad Men."

If you haven't been keeping up with the current season, here's the key points you need to know before watching the finale.

1. Sterling Cooper & Partners is no more.

mad men officeThe advertising agency that housed the talented and very sought-after creative director Don Draper was finally absorbed by its parent company, McCann Erickson, a few episodes ago. When the partners revealed the news to the SC&P staff, Draper announced “this is just the beginning.”

But everyone could see that things would never be the same, and soon Don would too.

2. Joan has left McCann Erickson after being sexually harassed.

Mad Men Joan Episode Lost HorizonOut of all the SC&P partners, Joan Holloway had the hardest transition moving to McCann Erickson. In fact, she quickly learned that her status at SC&P didn’t mean squat. First, she was talked down to by a male junior member on her team. Then she was hit on by one of the executives at the company.

But Joan finally realized where she stood in the company when her chat with McCann Erickson’s head honcho, Jim Hobart, ended with her threatening to get the ACLU involved for sexism in the work place. When it was all said and done, she never reported the company and agreed to leave with only half the money it owed her.

3. Peggy has turned over a new leaf.

At first the company thought she was a secretary. But Peggy stood her ground and stayed in the SC&P offices until she finally was told that McCann Erickson had an office for her. But in those final hours at SC&P she had a heart-to-heart with Roger Sterling. And through that she realized that going to McCann Erickson can be a new chapter in her career. A place where no one knows her past and she can create an edgy, no-nonsense persona.

4. Peter and Trudy are staring over.

a7ba03c5 c998 94db f967 9396aa8ee7ef_MM_713_JM_0602_1017On last week’s episode, Pete Campbell stumbles into a job opportunity at Learjet. This makes him think about the future, which would mean leaving New York. When he gets a serious offer, he decides to profess to his ex-wife Trudy that he still has feelings for her and wants her and their daughter to come with him to Wichita if he accepts the job. Following an emotional pre-dawn heart-to-heart, the two decide to give it another shot.

5. Betty has cancer.

ae65bf2c 1ca8 ada8 d7b2 76ac1663f649_MM713 17One of the most shocking developments from these final episodes is the reveal that Betty has lung cancer. She learned about it after injuring herself falling on stairs at the school where she’s taking psychology classes. The diagnosis is not good. The cancer is terminal and the doctor believes she has a year left to live, at the most. But Betty is staying strong about the news. She refuses to undergo treatment, and plans to continue taking classes and living her final months to the fullest.

6. Don is on the road.

9374868a 94fa 1644 73ad 78e7f271c095_MM_713_JM_0616_0201What will more than likely be the main focus of the final episode is the journey Don is currently on. He quickly realized McCann Erickson wasn’t for him after sitting in on a pitch meeting for Miller Beer with a table full of the McCann Erickson creative team. Seeing he was just a fish in a large pond, he walked out of the meeting and has been driving across the country ever since. He first tried to track down the waitress he’d been sleeping with for the last half of the season. When he couldn’t track her down, he began driving west. He’s even told people that he “used to be in advertising.” Last we saw him, he gave up his car to a kid he recently met and sat alone at the side of the road.

HBO just dropped another minute-long trailer for "True Detective" season 2, and for anyone who was skeptical about Vince Vaughn in a serious role, that's about to change.

The dialogue heavy trailer gives us a good look at our four leads — Vaughn, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Taylor Kitsch — and the first look at Vaughn looks pretty menacing.

The new season will follow three cops (McAdams, Farrell, and Kitsch) along with Vaughn as a career criminal who "navigate a web of conspiracy" after a murder.

"True Detective" season 2 premieres on HBO June 21.

Hulu picks up Fox's canceled 'Mindy Project'

mindy project goes to hulu

"The Mindy Project" has officially been saved from cancelation.

Hulu announced on Friday that it has picked up a fourth season of the romantic comedy from Mindy Kaling. The streaming company didn't specify a premiere date for what will amount to a 26-episode season.

It has also said that it has the option for more seasons beyond that as part of its agreement with "Mindy Project" producers Universal Television.

“I am thrilled 'The Mindy Project' has found a new home on Hulu, where so many of our fans are already watching the show. It's such an exciting place to be,” said star and executive producer, Mindy Kaling, in a statement.

Hulu already streams episodes of the comedy from previous seasons, which gives the streaming company additional knowledge going into the deal of how future seasons of "The Mindy Project" will perform for them.

the mindy project renew“Mindy has been a beloved member of the Hulu family, so this deal is a natural extension of our relationship,” said Hulu's senior vice president and head of content, Craig Erwich.

He continued, "With so many of her fans already catching up and tuning in to the series on Hulu, we know her millions of fans will be eager to find out what Mindy has in store for the next chapter.”

Fox canceled "The Mindy Project" last week after its recently wrapped third season averaged a low 1.05 in the advertiser-coveted demographic of Adults aged 18-49 and only 2.31 million viewers.

It's no secret that "The Mindy Project" has never been a ratings barn-burner, but it has done pretty well in DVR viewing and online viewing — which again makes sense for the Hulu pickup.

Business Insider confirmed at the time that talks between Universal TV and Hulu were underway.

One individual with knowledge of the situation told BI, "The show is creatively vibrant and has a passionate, upscale, loyal audience, and it is a top performer on Hulu. So, this makes a lot of sense."

Hulu has been beefing up its original series slate since 2011. Those offerings include supernatural comedy "Deadbeat," teen drama "East Los High" and the upcoming James Franco-Stephen King JFK assassination drama "11/22/63."

“The Mindy Project” joins a growing group of shows that found second lives on subscription TV services, including NBC’s “Community” on Yahoo, AMC’s “The Killing” on Netflix, and FX's “Damages” and NBC's “Friday Night Lights” on DirecTV.

How a Mormon-made Cold War drama got the attention of Netflix

On Friday, Netflix premiered“Granite Flats,” a TV series set in 1960s Colorado during the Cold War where not everyone in town is who they seem. The news here isn’t that the streaming service acquired an existing show to make available for its subscribers, it’s where it came from.

“Granite Flats” is the first scripted drama series from the thriving cable network BYUtv, operated and funded by Brigham Young University. The channel has been in existence since 2000 and is available on Dish Network, DirecTV, and 900 cable providers. But now being tapped by the most prominent streaming service, the network suddenly has many more eyes looking at it.

“I would love to say this was in our master plan, but we just got lucky,” Derek Marquis, BYUtv’s managing director told Business Insider.

The first season of “Granite Flats” aired on BYUtv in 2013 and quickly found an audience with its family-friendly values mixed with edgy subjects like the town’s chief of police on the trail of a KGB spy and the local VA hospital experimenting with mind control as a way to defeat the Soviets. They then upped the ante by bringing on veteran characters actors like Christopher Lloyd (“Back to the Future” films) and Parker Posey (“You’ve Got Mail”) the following seasons.

hargraves_01“We found ‘Granite Flats’ spreads across demographics,” said Marquis. “We don’t refer to it as family-friendly television because for some reason people think that’s sappy. It’s really co-viewing.”

Showrunner Scott Swofford, who is also BYUtv’s director of content, described the show’s draw as: “We wanted to create something where parents and children could share an experience. They are going to watch and then sit down and talk about it.”

When BYUtv was putting the final touches on the third season, talks with Netflix began to pick up.

In April, the deal was announced that Netflix would not just exclusively premiere season three of "Granite Flats" but also carry the first two seasons  making "Granite Flats" the first show that’s currently on the air on another network to debut a new season on Netflix.

Season three of “Granite Flats” will air on BYUtv in October.

Marquis wouldn’t go into specifics on who courted who, but he will say the deal was a no brainer for BYUtv. Reports out of Salt Lake City suggest Netflix were the ones who came calling.

“People want to watch shows when they want to watch it, where they want to watch it,” said Marquis. “And if you make them wait you’ll lose some percentage of them. This seemed like the natural next step for us.”

Brigham Young University — a private university based out of Provo, Utah, owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — has been in the media business since the 1940s when it started its own radio station (which is still on the air). To date, it operates six television stations, a station on Sirius radio, as well as TV stations in Latin America.

But in 2000, BYUtv was created with the mission of exporting the BYU experience to their alumni. Soon, according to Marquis, the network started to gain attention from people who didn’t have BYU ties.

“We were not out their knocking on cable system doors,” he said. “Dish Network launched us first and literally within weeks we were getting calls from cable operators outside of Utah [wanting to carry us].”

The network has their own “Saturday Night Live”-like sketch comedy show, “Studio C,” and reality TV shows like “American Ride,” which follows the travels of a motorcycle-riding history teacher around the US. It also airs BYU Division I sporting events, which includes a deal to air exclusively with ESPN.

DCOME_Large
BYUtv is currently manned by 120 full-time staff, and many contract workers from Hollywood who come on as crew on the shows. It also works with the university to help students gain real-world experience.

And in doing so, led to the network’s most successful show to date.

In 2010, senior James Shores was accepted to the university’s class “Writer’s Block,” in which students write and produce a 30-minute short film that then airs on BYU’s public access channel. Shores came up with “Heaven Under A Table,” which follows a young boy who paints art under his school desk.

“LDS (Latter-day Saints) people, like any religious group, can be a tad easy to get offended sometimes, but there are fringes everywhere,” said Shores. “So I pictured the story in the '60s. You have cool costumes, we’re trying to get to the moon, and the way people talked was a little more conservative back then.”

After Shores graduated, Swofford came across “Heaven Under A Table.” Along with some other ideas Shores had pitched BYUtv, the networked asked him to create a pitch for a show that combined them all.

And “Granite Flats” was born.

Shores has creator credit on the show and wrote episodes for the first season. He’s no longer actively on the show and is currently working on getting another project off the ground.

hargraves_02“Granite Flats” is made for about a quarter of what Hollywood does per episode, according to Marquis, because it’s done entirely out of Utah — including an abandoned 1960s-preserved town just outside of Salt Lake City that’s used for many exteriors. They also have a 100,000 square-foot production studio and distribution facility on campus.

production1411 12 1683The number of subscribers BYUtv has and how large the “Granite Flats” viewership is are kept under wraps. And though Marquis said a fourth season of the show hasn’t been confirmed yet, he feels if there is one it would likely also premiere on Netflix.

"We are not driven by advertisers or ratings,” said Marquis, “so we have flexibility to experiment and be pretty aggressive with the stuff we do.”

Watch all episodes of "Granite Flats" now on Netflix.
