George R.R. Martin: No One Ever Gets The Most Iconic Part Of 'Game Of Thrones' Right

game of thrones iron throne

If there's one thing "Game of Thrones" is known for other than dragons — it's the Iron Throne.

In the books, the chair is forged from 1,000 swords. The person who sits in it is considered the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.

It has become so iconic that magazines have parodied it and fans have commissioned their own versions. Several promotional thrones travel the world for fans to sit on and take photos with at "Game of Thrones" events. HBO was even selling a version of the chair for $32,000.

While the HBO version is the one fans and audiences may be most familiar with, "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin explained during a panel how no one ever gets the iconic throne correct.

At the event, held Sunday evening at the 92Y in New York City for Martin's new book "The World of Ice & Fire," he said that while numerous replicas existed throughout the world, none depicted the throne he had in mind while writing the series.

"Nobody ever got it right," Martin said. "There were comic book versions, and there were versions in the card game and the board game, and there were versions on the cover [of books], and there were versions that were done for conventions. The very first ... there was a wooden one that I sat on in 1996 ... but none of them were ever really right."

He says one person did come close, though. French artist Marc Simonetti impressed Martin so much that he collaborated with him until he produced a portrait depicting his actual vision.

"Even his first one wasn't right, but since he was the closest, I worked with him," Martin said. "We got the book and he and I went back and forth a half dozen times to get something I could say, 'Yeah, this is absolutely right.'"

iron throneMartin described at the panel how the throne was supposed to look:

I said repeatedly the Iron Throne is huge. It towers over the room like a great beast. And it's ugly. It's asymmetric. It's put together by blacksmiths not by craftsmen and experts in furniture manufacturing. You have to walk the iron steps, and when a king sits on it he's like 10 feet above everybody else ... He's in this raised position looking down on everyone.

Back in 2013, Martin shared his thoughts on HBO’s adaptation of the iconic throne in a blog post saying that while it’s great, it’s not technically correct.

The HBO throne has become iconic. And well it might. It's a terrific design, and it has served the show very well. There are replicas and paperweights of it in three different sizes. Everyone knows it. I love it. I have all those replicas right here, sitting on my shelves. And yet, and yet ... it's still not right. It's not the Iron Throne I see when I'm working on 'The Winds of Winter.' It's not the Iron Throne I want my readers to see.

game of thrones

Martin told fans at the panel that was not the show’s fault. It could never replicate on screen the image he had in his mind.

"Now, you can’t do this in the TV show," Martin said. "It’s not something I criticize HBO for. The thrones they have are enormously large and cumbersome to move and expensive to build. To build this monstrosity, would blow the budget of an entire episode, and it wouldn’t fit in the set.

"Our program is in the Paint Hall in Belfast in Northern Ireland," he added. "The Paint Hall is the largest sound stage in Europe. It [was] originally part of the old Portland Wolff shipyard where they built the Titanic. … We’ve divided it into a number of pods, and our throne room is in one of them. It’s a very large set, but it’s not large enough.”

titanic studios northern ireland studios

There is one place he could see a real-life throne existing.

"If they would give us St. Paul’s cathedral … after a year, build a giant throne like that and dominate the entire thing, go halfway to the ceiling, then you could get the Iron Throne the way it’s described in the book," Martin said. "This is the difference between books and television."

Tuesday was release day for "The World of Ice & Fire."

Netflix Reveals The Trailer For Its $90 Million Show ‘Marco Polo’

marco polo

Netflix released the first teaser trailer for another new series, "Marco Polo."

The high-profile series chronicles the life of the famed explorer in 13th century China where he crosses paths with the likes of Kublai Khan.

The series is created by John Fusco ("Hidalgo") and will star newcomer Lorenzo Richelmy as the lead while Harvey Weinstein serves as executive producer.

The Weinstein Company is also working with Netflix to release a "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" sequel on the streaming site next summer

The New York Times reports "Marco Polo" costs about $90 million to produce. To give you an idea of the enormity of that production scale, the first "Mission Impossible" movie cost an estimated $80 million.

Deadline reported last year an average Netflix TV series costs between $3.8 million to $4.5 million an episode. That would bring the cost of a 13-episode series to just under $60 million.

The series looks like it's trying to capture some of the thrill of HBO's "Game of Thrones," interspersing sex scenes with heavy action. Maybe that shouldn't be a surprise since "Marco Polo" executive producer Dan Minahan actually did work on "GoT" and "True Blood."

The trailer actually reminds me of what Fox was trying to do with an Ancient Egypt series called "Hieroglyph" which was cancelled before it even had the chance to premiere on TV.

The 10-episode series will debut December 12 on Netflix.

'South Park' Just Pointed Out Everything I Hate About Mobile Games

stan south park gaming

As someone who plays video game consoles somewhat regularly, I'll occasionally get asked what I think of mobile games.

I usually try to avoid answering, because if I'm perfectly honest, I'm not that fond of them. While I enjoy a limited few, I find most to be time-sucking procrastination machines that are hastily engineered ripoffs of games I played long ago on consoles and PC.

The purpose of the majority of them appears to be to try to get me addicted and to shell out money for silly upgrades to keep me coming back for more. No thanks.

I've never known how to articulate my feelings about mobile games out loud, though. Just about everyone I know seems to be hooked on some version of "Flappy Bird,""Dots,""Candy Crush," or whatever new game is hot at the moment.

So I was exhilarated when the latest episode of "South Park" Wednesday evening centered around the addictiveness of free mobile games and the thought process that goes into developing one.

It basically summed up everything I feel about mobile gaming: the games are overly simple and repetitive, the gameplay itself isn't long, players are pressured into making trivial purchases, and the games aren't even that fun.

It all starts out when Kyle and a few of his friends are introduced to a new game based on their favorite Canadian cartoon characters Terrence and Phillip.

kyle south park terrance phillip game

They all hear about the mobile game from their school friend Jimmy who pressures them into downloading the free game because "If it's free, why wouldn't you?" Sounds promising.

Here's a look at the game aptly titled: "Terrance & Phillip: Give Us Your Money."

It looks like a generic clone of your run-of-the-mill free mobile game app.

terrance phillip south park game

The goal of the game is ridiculously simple. All players need to do is collect coins on a screen simply by tapping them. This shouldn't be a toughy.

south park game terrance phillip

Kyle starts collecting coins. As he plays, he's encouraged by the game to keep playing with prompts like, "That's one coin. Can you collect all?"

south park terrance phillip game

After he collects 10 coins, he's given a small reward on screen telling him how well he did and encouraging him to keep playing.

south park mobile game

But before he can continue, Kyle's given an offer to purchase "Canadough Coins" to buy stuff in the game. A screen pops up prompting Kyle to buy something similar to any regular mobile-based free game app.

south park mobile game

Kyle immediately thinks it's "stupid"; however, his friend Butters points out it only costs $0.49 to purchase the smallest amount of Canadough coins. What could it hurt?

south park kyle butters phone

His small purchase lets him click on a piece of land to buy and place a hospital.

south park mobile game

I'm glad Terrance and Phillip look happy, but, that's it?!

Kyle soon realizes the game isn't all it's cracked up to be and wonders what kind of people are behind the game.

We're then introduced to the Canadian Department of Mobile Gaming. The company is bombarded by Terrance and Phillip who are frustrated their likenesses are being used in a free, popular app they consider "the dumbest game ever" because if people are paying for upgrades then the game isn't actually "free."

The company's response? They tell Terrance and Phillip they know the game isn't great and lay out "the science" behind "freemium gaming."

compliments south park freemium app

According to "South Park," a successful freemium game is based on five principles:

1. Simplicity: A player must be enticed with a simple game loop.
2. Compliments: Make sure you're making the gamer feel special and good about themselves.
3. Fake Currency: Train the players to spend your fake currency.
4. Switcheroo: Offer the customers a way to spend their real money for fake, virtual dollars, so they'll forget they're spending money.
5. Waiting Game: "Make the game about waiting, but make the player pay not to wait."

In addition, the game needs to be "just barely fun" because if it is too fun then there would be "no reason to micropay in order to make it more fun."

south park five principles freemium success

"South Park" added a few other funny tips for the success of freemium games in the background.

south park micro pay

However, the majority of "freemium" users won't pay for anything on the app. Instead, "South Park" lays out one more simple two-step strategy in which "freemium" games make money:

1. Find the heaviest users (addicts).
2. Extract the most amount of cash from them.

This is exactly what I've found in my personal experience. Friends, family, and colleagues will become so engrossed in their mobile games that they're addicted to them. In some instances they'll shell out hundreds of dollars to play something like "Candy Crush."

I don't understand it.

This is what happens in "South Park" when one of the kids, Stan, can't stop playing the "Terrence & Phillip" mobile game. He skips school to play the game for hours on end and winds up spending upwards of $26,000 (a rather exorbitant amount), justifiably freaking out his parents.

south park mobile app freemium

"South Park" likens this new mobile gaming addiction to other diseases like gambling and drinking.

And this is why I will not play mobile games. I think I've paid small fees twice in "freemium" games. The first time was in a "Despicable Me" temple run game (I will admit, that was totally worth it). The other time was while testing out the Kim Kardashian app (had to get that A-list celeb status). That was two times too much.

How A Billionaire Heiress Ended Up Joining 'Rich Kids Of Beverly Hills'

$

Rich Kids of Beverly Hills"The #RichKids of Beverly Hills" became the E! network's breakout reality show of 2014 and recently wrapped its second season on the air.

Made up of six wealthy best friends from the 90210 zip code, "Rich Kids" was inspired by the popular and outrageous Tumblr "Rich Kids of Instagram," in which offspring of the super rich flaunt their yachts, diamonds, magnums of champagne, and more.

Dorothy Wang Forbes

It was through this Tumblr that E! producers and casting directors found Dorothy Wang, the 26-year-old "funemployed" heiress to her father's $4 billion retail real estate fortune. Dorothy's dad, Roger Wang, founded the Golden Eagle International Group in Nanjing and turned it into one of the country's largest mall chains, with stores in 15 cities, according to Forbes.

"When Rich Kids Of Instagram launched, I was one of the main people they featured on the site," Wang told Business Insider over the phone as she was sitting in L.A. traffic. "I was one of the first people they put on the Tumblr and then they kept putting me on it. So I was approached after producers at the network saw me on the Tumblr page and from there they asked me, 'Would you ever want to do a reality show?' and I responded, 'Honestly, I thought I was living a reality show the last seven years of my life. Thank God cameras are going to be there so I’m not just posing into thin air for myself.'"

Dorothy Wang private jet

Casting Dorothy — who says she had no idea of her family's wealth "until it was printed in Forbes" despite her collection of $10,000 Hermés Birkin bags so large she "lost count"— was easy, but E! needed a whole cast of people just as outgoing and unabashedly outrageous as the self-described "fabuluxe" University of Southern California graduate.

rich kids of beverly hills"We went through the process of like, 'Who’s in your life? Do you have any friends who are really outgoing?'" Dorothy explains of the reality show casting process. "I immediately thought of my friend Morgan Stewart. Morgan and I literally used to have pow-wows together after spin class being like, 'We’re meant to be on TV! We know it’s going to happen.' And then one day it did. I went in, we brought in other relevant people in our lives... It was called 'The Morgan and Dorothy Project' for the longest time."

In order to round out the cast, Dorothy says, "There wasn’t an open call or a casting for the show at all. They wanted Morgan and I to do a show so we brought in our friends and they picked the ones who are on the show now. So, all of these people who are coming out of the woodwork saying they auditioned for the show, I’m like, 'I was there, that’s not what happened.'"

Rich Kids of Beverly HillsThe cast is currently made up of six Beverly Hills natives, including Magic Johnson's flamboyant son, a self-described "Persian Princess" interior designer, a successful young real estate agent, and a songwriter.

As with any reality show, the cast has conflicts with each other, but it's clear these friendships are real and have history that goes back further than when the cameras started rolling last year. The on-air conflicts haven't been enough to tear the group apart just yet.

"I think we’ve all gotten a lot closer because it’s such a unique experience that has really taken over our lives and is our lives at the same time," explains Dorothy. "I have a lot of friends outside of the show, but sometimes I don’t want to put them through an hour of me talking about the show so I just hang out with Morgan and Roxy so we can talk about what’s going on."

While Dorothy was on board to showcase her life for the public, adjusting to people's hateful comments online has taken some getting used to.

"I spent the first two weeks before and after the first episode aired basically crying and having anxiety attacks because it was so new to me," Dorothy admits. "But once the show progressed, we really saw a shift. People were like, 'Wait, we actually don’t hate you, we like you. You’re not annoying anymore.'"

Before the show aired, Dorothy had 26,000 followers on Instagram. Today she has 561,000 followers and counting, as well as a new outlook on her haters.

"Now when I do read the comments, I laugh at them," she says. "It’s crazy stuff like a person wanting to stab me in a back alley with a turkey leg. Sometimes they say the funniest things, we literally just read them out loud to each other. It’s funny to us now. I think we’ve all developed a much thicker skin."

So what does Dorothy's influential dad think about his daughter's newfound reality show fame?

"I literally waited until we had to sign our contracts to tell my family ... but when I told my dad he was the most supportive. He said, ‘I would never do it, but for someone like you, I think it’s something you will enjoy and be good at, and it’s something you can do a lot of things with. You have an interesting story to tell. Yes, you’re a rich kid, but you are also so much more and this would allow you to show that to the world.'"

Here's When The Next Big Villain Is Coming To 'The Walking Dead'

rick the walking dead season 5 ep 3Warning: There are some spoilers ahead for season 5 and from the comic book.

"The Walking Dead" fans may have been surprised this season when the new big villains this season, a group of cannibals, were quickly and brutally killed off in episode three.

It seemed like we were in for the long haul (or at least a little while) with this storyline. The leader of the cannibals, Andrew J. West's Gareth, seemed like the successor to the show's previous popular villain, The Governor (David Morrissey).

The Governor was on the series for two seasons. The cannibal crew lasted about a total of five episodes after heavily being teased over the course of season 4.

the governor the walking dead

Now that they're gone, the group doesn't have any main antagonist. Sure, Beth (Emily Kinney) was taken by a group of mysterious survivors, but they don't seem like any real threat Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and his group of survivors can't handle by the close of season 5.

beth the walking dead

What's next?

Any one who reads the comic knows there's a huge fan favorite villain coming eventually to the series named Negan.

Who's Negan?

negan the walking dead

If you thought the one-eyed, prison slaughtering Governor was awful, Negan's at least 10 times worse. The character is the leader of a large group of survivors coined "The Saviors" made up of mostly violent men. Negan delivers his own brand of justice with the swing of a bat wrapped in barbed wire he calls Lucille.

"The Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman confirmed to MTV News in April he's coming eventually.

There's just one problem.

The character isn't the easiest to bring to life on screen. Negan is known for throwing around the "f-bomb" in nearly every panel of the comic.

While at New York Comic Con last month, we caught up with "The Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman and asked him when we could expect to see Negan on the series and how the character would be adapted to screen.

It doesn't sound like we should be gearing up to see Negan in the rest of season 5.

"Negan says a word that you can't say on television. I understand that. I think that there are ways around that," Kirkman tells Business Insider. "Luckily, we're not going to have to work that out for some time. I'm not going to say when Negan will possibly show up on the show, but it's not any time soon."

How do you adapt a character who appears virtually unadaptable?

It's not even clear Kirkman's sure yet.

"We'll figure that out along the way," Kirkman added. "Maybe AMC can change the rules on TV."

Cuse will write the pilot episode and serve as one of three executive producers along with Randall Wallace ("Braveheart") and Barry Jossen ("Sex and the City").

Here's the full description of the series via Amazon:

10 Foreign TV Shows You Should Be Watching

$

Doctor WhoFall TV season is well underway.

While a few new series are coming to air, a few have already received the ax.

If you're bored with the current crop of TV shows, we've picked ten of the best series from around the world that you really shouldn't miss.

Most are available to stream on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon.

"Misfits" (UK)

What it's about: The dramedy follows a group of lower-class teenage felons who have been sentenced to community service. On their first day, they develop super powers after getting struck during an electrical storm.

Why you should watch: The strange, dark, risqué and hilarious world of "Misfits" has been a secret among Europeans and Australians for years airing for five seasons through 2013 making for some of the best supernatural TV since "Heroes."

The series won Best Drama Series at the BAFTA Television Awards in 2010.

Where to watch: Hulu

Watch the trailer.

"Please Like Me" (Australia)

What it's about: The dramedy follows twenty-something Josh Thomas as he comes to the realization he's gay.

Why you should watch: Gently navigating between touching and hilarious, the Australian series is quirky and refreshingly genuine. While it only reached small audiences in Australia, the series has been critically acclaimed in America with reviews referring to it as the "best new TV comedy you've never heard of" and "one of the year's best shows." Millennial network “Pivot" picked it up for at least another two seasons.

Where to watch: Pivot TV

Watch the trailer.

"Luther" (UK)

What it's about: Gritty, dark, and hauntingly cinematic, Luther follows the investigations of Detective Chief Inspector John Luther (Idris Elba).

Why you should watch: The performance by Elba is enough reason to tune into the series. Luther is a blunt instrument consumed by his cases. His best friend for much of the series is a charmingly insane serial killer, Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson), who he meets in the series' premiere.

The series' pacing and cinematography knows when to let periods of horror breathe without interruption.

Where to watch:  Netflix

Sunday night’s episode of “The Walking Dead” revolved around two fan favorites, Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride).

The two headed out on a rescue mission to save a kidnapped group member, Beth (Emily Kinney), from another unidentified group of strangers.

Along the way, the two come across a van hanging off a bridge which leads to one of the episode’s huge practical effects.

Last chance to head back before spoilers.

To avoid an oncoming group of zombies, the two jump inside the unstable van, strap on seat belts, and decide to dive headfirst off the bridge while hoping for the best.

Here’s how the scene plays out in the episode.

You can clearly see the van starts to flip in this first GIF.

However, the scene cuts and in the next shot, viewers see the van crash right side up on all four wheels.

What happened? The van was clearly ready to flip over, right?

Yes, it was.

According to “The Walking Dead” after show “The Talking Dead,” the series used a total of four identical vans to complete the scene, two of which made the 50 foot drop.

In a behind-the-scenes featurette on the episode, “The Walking Dead” crew shows how they faked the van crash to make it look like the duo landed pretty safely.

The first time they dropped the van from the bridge, the team attempted to just roll it off after loading the vehicle with a lot of extra weight on the rear end.

That didn’t go as planned.

The van flipped 180 degrees onto its top.

“The drop itself was a bit of a challenge,” explained co-executive producer Denise Huth in the featurette. “The first drop we did the van landed upside down which we did not want it to do.”

The team tried it out again a second time in order to get the look they wanted. During a second drop, another van was dropped from a cable.the walking dead van cable

The second drop gave the crew the shot they needed for Carol and Daryl to survive the crash.

In case you were wondering, while Carol and Daryl did do some filming in the van, the actors had their own stunt dummies on board for the actual crash to show their point of view.

Dave Chappelle Wants To Return To TV

dave chappelle

Dave Chappelle returned to the spotlight earlier this year when he performed sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall for one week straight.

10 years ago, the comedian walked away from a hit series on Comedy Central and a reported $50 million contract

During a stand-up routine in 2004, Chappelle told the audience the show was ruining his life

Since his return, fans have wondered whether the 41-year-old comedian is ready to make a comeback.

In a new interview with GQ, Chappelle says he wouldn’t mind returning to television, but not with his own show. Instead, he has a “show-business bucket list” he’d like to accomplish.

"For one year, I want to do this thing where I guest-star on as many television shows as I possibly can,” Chappelle tells GQ. "I love television. The fact that television ultimately made me famous was very gratifying for me. Chris Tucker did it in movies, and Chris Rock did it from his stand-up, which was very impressive."

"But you know, the thing that people most will remember me for is 'Chappelle's Show,'" he adds. "If I were to never do anything else, that show would be a culmination of what was a very long and tedious process of me learning how to be in the television business."

Chappelle says if he could choose any shows to star on it would be "The Walking Dead," a series he has binge-watched, "CSI," or ABC's hit show with Kerry Washington, "Scandal."

"I’d be a zombie in The Walking Dead. A corpse on CSI. I'd be the first black guy to f— Olivia Pope on Scandal," says Chappelle.

Dave Chappelle Did 11 Failed TV Pilots Before 'Chappelle's Show'

Dave Chappelle is best known for his hit comedy "Chappelle's Show," but the comedian had the chance to be a TV star before the Comedy Central series.

Chappelle revealed he was in 11 different failed TV show pilots in a new in interview with GQ.

"I probably did eleven failed television pilots," Chappelle told GQ. "And I have to be honest: Like, maybe one went to series. Another one was bought, but I quit."

When asked why he quit, Chappelle said he didn't think the series was good enough.

"It just wasn't good," said Chappelle. "None of 'em were really good. And it took that experience, those experiences, to learn how to do television."

One show Chappelle starred on before his Comedy Central career was a "Home Improvement" spinoff titled "Buddies" which aired on ABC in 1996.

The series followed two friends as they tried to start up a film company called “Hi-Intensity." Only five episodes of the series ever made it to air.

Here's how Chappelle described the show to CBS in 2004: ""It was a bad show. It was bad. I mean when we were doing it, I could tell this was not gonna work."

Chappelle told GQ his television experience up until that point taught him it may be better for him to take the lead on a series.

"I'm a slow learner," Chappelle added. "Early in my career, I was along for a ride. And then, later in my career, I was like, 'You know, I should really drive. 'Cause nobody has ever taken me to a place I actually want to go.'"

That led to three seasons on Comedy Central's "Chappelle's Show," which the comedian abruptly left in 2004. While the show launched Chappelle into stardom, he tells GQ he sometimes forgets he had a hit show.

“Even now, I can go days at a time and forget that I ever did Chappelle's Show or any of that s---,” said Chappelle.

Chappelle is alright with that. He says allowing himself to forget the comedy has allowed him to focus on other things.

“What that's allowed me to do is have a vantage point about my own life that's accessible to people still,” added Chappelle. “I could see a guy walking down the street and be like, Even though I'm famous, I got more in common with this guy than, like, Brad Pitt. You know what I mean?”

The 'Rich Kids Of Beverly Hills' Were Not Happy About Their Reality Show's Title

Rich Kids of Beverly Hills

"The Rich Kids Of Beverly Hills" may have been the E! network's breakout reality hit when it premiered earlier this year, but the six wealthy best friends-turned-cast mates from the 90210 zip code were not initially happy with the show's title.

rich kids of beverly hills"The name of the show wasn’t chosen until after," one of the show's stars, Dorothy Wang, tells Business Insider. "Basically, we had a show as a group of friends with no title. It was called 'The Morgan and Dorothy Project' for the longest time. And then once we got the show, we shot the pilot, and they go, 'Oh by the way, it’s going to be called 'Rich Kids of Beverly Hills.'"

The "Rich Kids," who all come from very comfortable backgrounds, were not pleased.

"We were like, 'What?!' All of us were all taken aback by it," says Dorothy, an heir to her father's $4 billion retail real estate empire. "We were like, 'Our parents are going to kill us, people are going to hate us.' In the beginning, we all did not love the title."

Dorothy, who "waited until we had to sign our contracts to tell my family about the show," finally broached the topic of the title with her parents. "They literally said, 'Well, can we change it?'"

Dorothy Wang Forbes

"My dad finally said, 'You’re in a really unique position. Yes, you’re a rich kid, but you are also so much more and this would allow you to show that to the world. And you have a way to disprove the negative images of rich kids.'"

Dorothy's father founded the Golden Eagle International Group in Nanjing and turned it into one of the country's largest mall chains, with stores in 15 cities, according to Forbes.

Now two seasons into the reality show loosely based on the popular Tumblr "Rich Kids of Instagram," Dorothy says her father is fully on board.

"He is always reminding me of his motto: 'Are you adding value to society?' So he will sit down with me and be like, 'What value are you going to add to this episode?' He wants it to be bigger than the fluff and fun. He understands that it’s for entertainment, but at the same time he wants me to be true to myself and not get caught up in the fun of it. He wants me to do something legitimate with it all."

Clearly her father's influence is rubbing off. In the pilot episode, which was viewed by over a million people, Dorothy organizes a blood drive for her friends.

Dorothy Wang Rich Kids Beverly Hills family parents"I do think our family is surprisingly grounded and relatable," Dorothy explains of her billionaire upbringing. "We like nice vacations and nice things, but I’ll go to Costco with my mom. We’ll eat in hole in the wall restaurants while traveling. We like nice things, but we also value the simpler things. I think a lot of that is because when I was younger, we would travel to China and my parents would take us to the orphanages and we would work with the kids, so we knew how fortunate we were. We’re not better than anyone else."

Ultimately, Dorothy says, "It became a mission for us to take the stigma out of the [show] title. I think as the show progresses, the stigma of the title goes away more and more as people see who we really are.”

Today, Dorothy says, her parents "let me be me.”

TV Land Pulls 'The Cosby Show' Reruns Amid Rape Allegations

bill cosby at the American Comedy Awards

NEW YORK (AP) — NBC has scrapped a Bill Cosby comedy that was under development and TV Land will stop airing reruns of "The Cosby Show," moves that came a day after another woman came forward claiming that the once-beloved comic had sexually assaulted her.

NBC spokeswoman Rebecca Marks said Wednesday the Cosby sitcom "is no longer under development." A TV Land representative said the reruns will stop airing immediately for an indefinite time. "The Cosby Show" also was to have been part of a Thanksgiving sitcom marathon.

The NBC sitcom and "Cosby Show" reruns joined a Netflix Cosby standup comedy special, which was indefinitely postponed late Tuesday, as mounting evidence of Cosby's faltering career. They occurred a day after model Janice Dickinson, in an interview with "Entertainment Tonight," became the third woman in recent weeks to allege she'd been assaulted by Cosby — charges strongly denied by the comedian's lawyer.

The developments, which involve allegations that were widely reported a decade ago as well as new accusations, have gravely damaged the 77-year-old comedian's reputation as America's TV dad at a time when he was launching a comeback. A year ago, a standup special — his first in 30 years — aired on Comedy Central and drew a hefty audience of 2 million viewers. His prospective new series was announced by Comcast Corp.'s NBC in January.Cosby has never been charged in connection with any of the allegations. Former Pennsylvania prosecutor Bruce L. Castor Jr., who investigated a woman's claims that Cosby had sexually assaulted her in 2004, said Wednesday he decided not to prosecute because he felt there was not enough evidence to get a conviction.

"I wrote my opinion in such a way as I thought conveyed to the whole world that I thought he had done it, he had just gotten away with it because of a lack of evidence," the former Montgomery County district attorney said.

If Cosby hadn't been cooperative with the investigation, "I probably would have arrested him," Castor said.

Cosby was asked about the growing furor by an Associated Press reporter when the comedian was promoting an exhibition at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art that features the comedian's African-American art collection alongside African artworks.

When the AP interviewed Cosby, on Nov. 6, the story involved long-circulated accusations from several women and recent criticism from comedian Hannibal Buress. Cosby declined to comment, saying "We don't answer that."

The AP mentioned the allegations and Cosby's decision not to comment at the end of its story, which, like the interview, was primarily about his loan of more than 50 artworks to the Washington museum.

The Cosby Show

Since then, two women have come forward publicly to accuse him of sexual assault, Netflix, TV Land and NBC cut ties and an appearance on "The Late Show With David Letterman" was canceled. In recent days, as the allegations gained increasing attention, AP went back through the full video of the Nov. 6 interview and decided to publish Cosby's full reaction to questions about the claims.

The AP was among a handful of news organizations granted interviews with Cosby in connection with the art exhibition. After his initial refusal to comment — as the interview was winding down but with the camera still running and Cosby wearing a lapel microphone — the comedian asked the AP to not use the brief on-camera refusal to comment he had just made about the allegations. "And I would appreciate it if it was scuttled," he said.

The interview was on the record. The AP had made no agreement to avoid questions about the allegations or to withhold publishing any of his comments at any time.

The Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art has not changed its plans for the show, which opened this month on the National Mall and is scheduled to remain on view through early 2016.

"The exhibition has been very well received. We've actually had record numbers through the door," spokesman Eddie Burke said, adding the museum has had no complaints.

The NBC project was in the very early stages, without a script or commitment to production. But it would have brought Cosby back to the network where he had reigned in the 1980s with the top-rated "The Cosby Show."

There's some precedent for a network burying a project because of stories involving a star's personal life. NBC shelved a two-hour TV movie, "Frogmen," starring O.J. Simpson in 1994 after the former football star was implicated in his wife's death.

Cosby has continued working as a stand-up comic, and has at least 35 performances scheduled throughout the U.S. and Canada through May 2015. None of the performances has been cancelled.

National Artists Corporation, which is promoting part of the tour, said it will not be canceling any shows.

Dickinson told "Entertainment Tonight" that Cosby had given her red wine and a pill when they were together in a Lake Tahoe, California, hotel room in 1982. When she woke up the next morning, "I wasn't wearing my pajamas and I remembered before I passed out I had been sexually assaulted by this man."

Cosby's lawyer, Martin Singer, said in a letter to the AP that Dickinson's charges were "false and outlandish" and were contradicted by Dickinson herself in a published autobiography. Cosby's spokesman, David Brokaw, did not return calls for comment.

Singer said the first Cosby heard of any assault allegation from Dickinson came in the "Entertainment Tonight" interview, and suggested the actress was "seeking publicity to bolster her fading career."

HBO CEO: I Wish We Nabbed 'Mad Men'

don draper mad men jon hamm

HBO is known for hits including "True Detective" and "Game of Thrones"; however, there's one show CEO Richard Plepler wishes the cable network was able to snag.

During a panel at the Paley Center's International Council Summit in New York City Thursday, Plepler was asked what one show makes him go "Oh man, I wish we had that one."

"I'm an unabashed fan of 'Mad Men,'" said Plepler. "You know I love the show. I think Matt [Weiner] is a gifted writer and producer. I was a big fan of the show all through its incarnation.”

HBO and Showtime both passed on the series about admen in the 1960s before it was picked up by AMC.

According to a 2009 Vanity Fair article, HBO originally wanted to make the show under the condition David Chase ("The Sopranos") was an executive producer. While Chase "championed the script," he wanted to move away from weekly television.

Is HBO sour about the loss? Plepler says not at all.

“Honest to god, we don't spend time lamenting what we don’t have or mistakes," he said. "We spend all our energy and time focusing on, 'What do we want to do now?' 'Who’s out there that we want to work with?’”

Plepler added it has been that attitude which led to HBO landing John Oliver on the network.

"Mad Men," starring Jon Hamm and Christina Hendricks, will start the second half of its final seventh season next spring.

10 Foreign TV Shows You Should Be Watching

The 88-Year Evolution Of The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Macy's Day Parade

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has become an irreplaceable staple of Thanksgiving festivities.

Every year, 3.5 million people flock to New York City to see the parade march down a two-and-a-half mile stretch of Manhattan.

Another 50 million people gather around their television sets to watch the event from home.

What began as a small Macy's employee-run event called Macy's Christmas Parade, has morphed into a huge production that requires almost an entire year's worth of preparation.

Macy's 88th Annual Thanksgiving Day spectacle will feature appearances from Idina Menzel, KISS, and The Vamps. Six new balloons including Paddington Bear will make their debut in the parade.

Christina Austin and Jennifer Michalski contributed to this report.

The first Macy's Day Parade was on November 27 in 1924. The parade originally featured Macy's employees and live animals from the Central Park Zoo. Floats, instead of balloons, were the main attraction.

The parade began in Harlem at 145th Street and ended in front of the Macy's flagship store on 34th Street. It was originally called the Macy's Christmas Parade, but was renamed the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in 1927.

An estimated 250,000 spectators attended the first parade. Today, about 3.5 million people attend.

'The Walking Dead' Creator Says The Show Could Go On For 12 Seasons

$

rick daryl the walking deadWarning: Minor spoilers follow if you're not caught up with "The Walking Dead."

"The Walking Dead" finished up its season 5 mid-season finale Sunday night.

At the end of the episode, Rick (Andrew Lincoln), Daryl (Norman Reedus), group were reunited with the rest of their crew. With no shelter and a firetruck at their disposal, it's uncertain where the gang is heading from here.

"The Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman hinted on Sunday's aftershow "The Talking Dead" that if you read the comics you shouldn't be surprised by where they're heading next on their journey.

the walking dead

In the comics, the group head to a safe-zone located in Alexandria, Virginia.

The Alexandria storyline comes pretty far in the comics (issue #69). Now that the monthly comic series is at issue #134, a common question among fans is whether the show will catch up with the comic series, and, what would happen if that does eventually occur.

We recently caught up with Kirkman at New York Comic Con where the creator assured us fans have nothing to worry about. There's plenty of material for the AMC series for seasons to come.

"We have a huge head start," Kirkman tells Business Insider. "We’re many many years ahead of them [the comics] and Charlie Adlard and I continue to crank issues out every month. So if we continue and the show continues, the material we’re working on right now would be season 11 or 12."

"And by the time we get to season 11 or 12, we’ll be like five or six years ahead of that," he adds. "Really at the pace that the show is going and the comic is going, they’ll never really catch up."

Not many series make it to 10 seasons and beyond. If its run does last that long, "The Walking Dead" would be in a select group with shows including "M*A*S*H" (11 seasons), "Frasier" (11 seasons) and "Two and a Half Men" (12 seasons). "The Simpsons" is now in its 26th season.

Kirkman's aware of that and the possibility that at any point zombie fatigue could in, but he says they're well prepared.

"The show could fade in popularity and end at some point," says Kirkman. "We’re certainly aware of that and we have game plans in place for that if it were to happen."

the walking dead rick carl

"I would argue that our show isn’t solely a zombie show. It’s a survival show," Kirkman adds. "If you’ve been paying attention to the comics the zombies certainly fluctuate from being very in the forefront to being very far into the background and not being a very big part of the comic at all. And I think the show will follow a similar trajectory. So, I think as long as we can kind of be more than just a zombie show, we’ll hopefully be okay if there’s ever a big backlash to zombies but who knows what the future holds as far as the show’s popularity goes. We’ll see."
