Jenny McCarthy And Sherri Shepherd Are Out At 'The View'

A major shakeup went on at "The View" Thursday.

First, co-host Sherri Shepherd announced she was leaving the show after seven years, saying, "I look forward to the business opportunities that lay ahead for me and I am incredibly grateful to my View family and my fans."

But many are claiming the real reason behind Shepherd's departure was that ABC and the TV star could not reach a new contract deal after protracted negotiations. Shepherd is also in the midst of a very messy divorce.

Shortly after Shepherd's announcement, co-host of just one season, Jenny McCarthy, tweeted: "If Sherri goes... I go too. ."

McCarthy, who was reportedly walking on thin ice on the show already, later explained:

McCarthy's fiancé, Donnie Wahlberg, chimed in:

While Shepherd later Instagrammed:

"Mr @DonnieWahlberg always takes care of his ladies @jennyannmccarthy & me! To be continued... ;O)"donnie wahlberg jenny mccarthy sherri shepherd

Shepherd and McCarthy are both expected to finish out the show’s current season, which wraps the first week of August.

“The View” is heading into its 18th season this fall, but there may be even more shakeups on both sides of the camera to come, reports Variety.

Erykah Badu awkwardly interrupted a local Pix11 newscast in New York on Saturday.

As reporter Mario Diaz was doing a live shot discussing Shia LaBeouf's latest legal issues, Badu walked up and tried to kiss him.

Diaz pushed the singer away while telling viewers he "couldn't avoid a fan just now," without realizing who the intruder was.

Badu later tweeted an apology to Diaz:

But clearly the reporter wasn't offended, tweeting back with the Prince lyrics:

After Diaz promised "Next time I won't do the NYC push back," the two began joking about the incident:

These Beautiful Illustrations Show Every Major Death On 'Game Of Thrones'

HBO's "Game of Thrones" is known for the surprising deaths of some of its most major characters. Some deaths are pretty gruesome, while others can be quite beautiful.

That's why HBO collaborated with the digital marketing agency 360i and artist Robert Ball to put together the "Beautiful Death" series, which chronicles the show's major deaths by turning them into works of art.

We spoke with Ball and asked him about the series and how he puts it together.

WARNING: "GAME OF THRONES" SPOILERS AHEAD.

For his first piece, Ball took blood and turned it into a map of Westeros. "I decided early on that there should be more to them than straight illustration," Ball told us. According to him, doing this gave it "more intrigue and depth."

Blade, Westeros, beautiful death, game of thrones

The depth and intrigue of the series has helped it stand out. For example, turning the beheading of season one's protagonist, Ned Stark, into birds flying into the heavens created a beautiful image out of one of the most unexpected deaths on the show.

Ned Stark, Beautiful Death, Game of Thrones

Ball says the images only take a couple of days to put together. The image for season three's bloody and shocking Red Wedding didn't take that long to create.

Red Wedding, Game of Thrones, Beautiful Death

One of Ball's favorite pieces was of Arya's first kill in season two. "I wanted to show that the little girl that was Arya is no more," He said. "To me it's direct, simple and powerful - the most emotional of the pieces."

Arya, Coin, beautiful death, game of thrones

According to Ball, all of the work is digital. However, some do contain hand drawn elements. This is how Ball responded to King Joffrey's poisoning in season four.

Joffrey, Beautiful Death, Game of Thrones

When the fourth season came around, Ball didn't have any idea of the upcoming deaths so he created images as they occurred like the trial by combat piece below. "I was responding to each episode 'live' and worked on each piece week by week."

The Mountain and the Viper, Beautiful Death, Game of Thrones

Ball says not knowing shocking events like Tyrion murdering his father Tywin in the season four finale have been enjoyable. "It made season four even more exciting to watch," he said.

Here's How Yahoo's 'Community' Episode Budget Compares To NBC

community joel mchale danny pudi

Yahoo announced Monday that it will revive NBC's cancelled "Community" for a 13-episode sixth season.

In addition to "hopefully" keeping the entire cast, Yahoo also plans to maintain the same production budget for each episode.

Zack Van Amburg, Sony Pictures Television president of programming and production, told The Hollywood Reporter how Yahoo's per-episode budget compares with NBC.

"We will not cut any money from what we were doing on the broadcast version of the show. No low-cost digital whatever; Yahoo was spectacular with that and told us how much they stand for quality. You haven't seen a whole slew of announcements out of them but when they make announcements, they want them to be loud and to stand for something. They really were beyond supportive with understanding the production demands of a sixth-year show. They are fully supporting it in their deal and beyond; it's pretty historic."

While the cost of a "Community" episode hasn't been released, E! Online reports that $1 million is "a starting point" for TV dramas like "Grey's Anatomy."

It appears Netflix has a higher budget. "The cheapest show is $3.8 million an episode ... 'House of Cards' started at $4.5 million and [executive producer David] Fincher took it way above that," CAA agent Peter Micelli said last year while speaking at an event at UCLA.

Micelli added, "The next series is ‘Hemlock Grove’ and they’re doing that for about $4 million an episode ... ‘Orange is the New Black’ is just under $4 million as well. They’re huge budgets shows, doing things in a huge way."

One Of Next Year's New Fox Shows Has Already Been Cancelled

Fox, hieroglyphic

Last October, Fox ordered the adventure series Hieroglyph straight to series with 13 episodes.  This was an unusual move for a broadcast network with an unknown property.  It was part of former Fox Chairman of Entertainment Kevin Reilly‘s plan to move Fox away from the traditional pilot season model.  Reilly’s pitch for Hieroglyph:

“We wanted to do a show about deceit, sex, intrigue in the court and fantastical goings-on—no better place to set that than ancient Egypt.”

As “former” implies, Reilly resigned last month after upfront week.  It remains to be seen if Fox will return to the pilot season model in Reilly’s absence, but the network clearly was not happy with the results of this particular experiment.  Fox has cancelled Hieroglyph before it had a chance to reach its midseason premiere.

THR reports Hieroglyph is not moving forward due to “creative reasons.”  Only the first episode had been filmed.  The writers were in the process of breaking out the rest of the season under the direction of creator Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim) and showrunner Anna Fricke (Being Human).  Production was scheduled to begin on the other 12 episodes later this year for an early 2015 premiere.  However, the scripts were not coming together as Fox hoped, so the network cut bait before they invested too much in the project.

Here’s the trailer, so you can see what you are missing:

Official synopsis:

The world of ancient Egypt – a time of magic, Pharaohs, gods and thieves – lives again in HIEROGLYPH, an exciting action-adventure series from creator/executive producer Travis Beacham (“Pacific Rim,” “Clash of the Titans”). The epic fantasy follows a notorious thief who is plucked from prison to serve the Pharaoh, forcing him to navigate palace intrigue, seductive concubines, criminal underbellies and divine sorcerers, as he races to stop the downfall of one of history’s greatest civilizations.

How Yahoo Beat Hulu To Get ‘Community'

NBC Community

Sony Pictures Television continues to be the biggest champion of its original programming after the studio reached a landmark deal to revive NBC's canceled cult comedy Community for a sixth season — at Yahoo.

Here, Sony Pictures Television president of programming and production Zack Van Amburg talks with The Hollywood Reporter about shopping the series, why Yahoo is a good fit and if the critical darling but ratings-challenged series could continue beyond its upcoming sixth season. (You know, after the first half of #SixSeasonsAndAMovie comes to pass.)

How did this deal come together?

The easiest way to say it is we never give up. We try so hard and have a pretty decent record now of saving and/or rescuing some of our favorite shows, whether it's Damages or Unforgettable. Certainly, Community is right in there in a passion project and it's got a storied past. Dan Harmon was gone; we invited Dan back; Dan came back; [NBC Entertainment chairman] Bob [Greenblatt] picking up the show every year — it was a weird pickup we had last year, where he was sort of apologizing to himself and to the audience for picking it up again [laughs] and was bowing under social pressure to do so. When the news came down that we weren't going to be back on NBC for another year, it wasn't surprising news but it was disappointing for sure. Usually at other studios, that means the end of the road. Once the network says, "We've spoken," unless you're Sony and you just think that's an initial reaction, everywhere else it's sort of final. We had a series of conversations with NBC and finally Bob, as nicely as he could, said, "Stop f—ing calling me about Community!" [Laughs.] We pushed that one too much and we started to reach out to some of our other partners and networks. I saw it speculated in the press that there wasdecent interest from Hulu. That was true. We had a pretty advanced conversation. They have been an amazing partner; the show has done great things for them and their support has been beyond appreciated. It made sense that between Hulu and Comedy Central — who both currently carry the show — that maybe that was going to be our savior. We were in pretty advanced conversations with Hulu and we had made a half-dozen or so phone calls to other places. Then out of the blue — and this never happens — I got the best phone call in the world from Yahoo selling us on why Yahoo would be great destination [forCommunity]. To be honest, we were so far down the path with Hulu that, hopefully not arrogant but [we were], maybe a little bit dismissive of their overture, which made them that much more committed to explaining to us and to Joel McHale and Dan Harmon why this was going to be a cornerstone of the new Yahoo that they're about to unveil to the world. They really want to be close to their users and viewers and wanted it to be a safe destination for creators. It was an excellent and articulate speech.

Yahoo is slowly starting to get into originals, following the likes of Amazon, Hulu, Microsoft and Netflix. What kind of concerns do you have thatCommunity will find an audience here vs. on a more established streaming platform?

Here's the good news: For most of the big services, including cable networks that preexisted, it really just takes one show. I think we've proven that we have a built-in fan base. I'm less concerned about finding audience on Yahoo than I was at 8 p.m. on NBC. We had no lead-ins because we were kicking off the night. And when you take a look at the ratings on NBC, we did better than everything that followed us and preceded us at 8 on Thursday night. The show has a rabid fan base that I think will come to it no matter where it is. More importantly, we have a younger, very savvy audience that understands shows exist in alternative places. There will be strong online appeal. There's going to be a groundswell of support. The Yahoo people said something very interesting: They're looking to create shows and content for people that didn't know that that's what they wanted. Meaning they're very encouraging on the fact that strong word-of-mouth and good buzz is going to bring an audience. But they also believe they have a real plan to intro Community to a whole new audience that may not have heard of it yet. All those marketing plans are going to be forthcoming, but they were pretty savvy about what their new plan is. In terms of their slow rollout, in our history as a studio, The Shield went to FX at a time when nobody really knew what FX was. Breaking Bad went to AMC at a time where nobody knew what AMC was because we sold that and Mad Men hadn't been on the air yet and there was no original strategy there. We've been in early on the Netflix side of things and are very encouraged. I have nothing but genuine high hopes for Yahoo, particularly when you talk to the management there. They're really savvy and part of why you haven't seen a lot come from them is because they want to be very strategic and specific about how to be successful. We certainly liked what we were hearing from them.

COVER STORY 'Community's' Dan Harmon Reveals the Wild Story Behind His Firing and Rehiring

When we spoke in May during upfronts, you mentioned you were receiving multiple calls about finding the show a new home. Who was part of that first wave of suitors? I'd imagine your first hope was another broadcast or cable network.

I always think the easiest thing to do when a show gets canceled is to convince its home network that they were wrong in their cancellation. The truth about the upfronts is that people are pressured to make decisions, and you try to make the best decision with the information that's in front of you. But I often think what doesn't happen is taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture. We're always hopeful that we can keep a show — as we did with CBS' Unforgettable. I got a nice note this morning from Nina Tassler saying the show is fantastic and she's happy to have it. That was canceled a few years ago and, out of the rush of May, she looked up and said it made sense to keep it. The hope is always to try your best to keep the show on the originating network. That wasn't in the cards. The conversations were as wide as you could imagine. We called other broadcast networks. There wasn't a lot of room on the schedule and it was a strange comedy year for the other broadcast networks. We had targeted conversations cable-wise and most aggressively with Hulu. They made a significant offer on the show, but it was Yahoo that surprised us all and came in so aggressively and positively.

How will Yahoo's deal impact Hulu's streaming pact? Will the first five seasons remain there?

That sixth season is an entirely different streaming pact. The Community that was will continue to be on Hulu. The Community that will be will be on Yahoo.

What are the prospects for Community beyond season six? Is this a final season? Could it hit seven seasons?

I don't know, let's see how our movie does! Isn't that our plan? There's no way we're not making the movie now! I think once we make the movie, let's look up and decide how much more Community the world wants. We promised six seasons and a movie, how much more do you want?! [Laughs.] … I'd be lying if I told you that we have not had some very early and preliminary conversations that are very exciting about what a potential movie could be and who might direct it. It's early but it's completely in our thought process.

PHOTOS Summer TV Preview

Could the movie stream on Yahoo or are you looking for a theatrical release?

I don't know; that's the part that is preliminary. It was not part of our Yahoo conversation. We were singularly focused on getting the series picked up but I think anything is possible.

Is the entire cast returning?

That's our plan, yes. Today we're sending notices to everybody only because we have a separate deal both with Joel McHale and Jim Rash; we've been having lots of conversations with them and Joel has been fantastic. The hope is that the whole cast is coming back.

How does the per-episode budget for Yahoo compare with NBC?

We will not cut any money from what we were doing on the broadcast version of the show. They are fully supporting it in their deal and beyond; it's pretty historic.

How big of a role did Harmon play in resurrecting Community?

Dan puts so much of himself into these things. The last thing you want if you're Dan Harmon is a delusional studio executive calling you up saying, "Here's the weather report and here's how we're shopping it." We were mindful of the fact that we had tried to do [the show] without Dan at a time and going forward we wanted to do it with him. We gave him a gentle heads-up that we were going to be having conversations without specifics. When it got down to the final moments of making the deal, Dan was front and center and had a great conversation with Yahoo and had a lot of very thoughtful questions about protecting his baby and how they were going to nurture it along. He was intimately involved in the finals steps. He was not involved in getting us to that place just because it's too hard to mourn the loss of something more than once and he has done that when Bob made the initial call. We didn't want to prolong the pain.

Community's sixth season will debut in the fall on Yahoo.

Walter White May Appear On 'Breaking Bad' Spinoff 'Better Call Saul'

"Better Call Saul!" might be calling up Bryan Cranston's Walter White character for a cameo in the upcoming "Breaking Bad" spinoff show.

Executive producer Peter Gould says the show's timeline will indeed shift between decades, according to Page Six.

“One of the great things about having a time line which is flexible is that perhaps some of it takes place before ‘Breaking Bad,’ during ‘Breaking Bad,’ and after ‘Breaking Bad'. That gives us the ability to bring back characters that were killed on ‘Breaking Bad,’ ” said Gould.

This confirms what star Bob Odenkirk told us last fall when he said he wanted to see what happened before and after "Breaking Bad."

Since the show will be filming in Albuquerque, Odenkirk teased a few familiar faces including Mike (Jonathan Banks) and Huell (Lavell Crawford) could return.

In addition, it leaves room for possible cameos by Bryan Cranston (Walter White) or Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman).breaking bad saul walter white

Here's what Odenkirk had to say to us back in November:

"I don’t know whether their characters [Mike and Huell] matter that much or if we just need to hire you know Bryan (Cranston) and Aaron (Paul) to walk behind me at the golf course or walk across the street when I’m driving my car around town. I don’t know if they’ll engage with the story, but they could."

"Better Call Saul" has already been renewed for a second season and will premiere on AMC next year.

What Is Yahoo Screen And Why Is It Saving 'Community'?

$

community joel mchale danny pudi

Granting the wishes of millions of fans who still believed in the power of the “six seasons and a movie” mantra, Community is indeed getting a sixth season (the movie is still, of course, a dream), though not in the way most viewers were probably expecting. When NBC canceled the series in May, outraged fans demanded answers, which came in increasingly more positive waves, thanks to the news that a number of on-demand services (from Hulu to Netflix) could pick up the series. And although neither of those names (or even Amazon and Crackle, which were also suggested) took the tantalizing TV bait, someone else did.

According to an official press release and the gleeful howls of Human Beings everywhere, Yahoo! Screen will now revive the beloved television series (which, based on this news, is still a former television series, it’s all online now, baby!), news that probably requires the question: wait, what’s Yahoo! Screen?

Yahoo! Screen (and, side note, while Yahoo has not discarded their kicky exclamation point, it’s far easier to write without it) was formerly Yahoo Video, a video sharing website much like YouTube, one that allowed users to share and upload their own material. In February of 2008 (after less than two years in existence), Yahoo Video turned their focus to only sharing officially Yahoo-hosted materials — think trailers, Yahoo specials, and branded clips — before removing all uploading ability entirely in December of 2010 in order to relaunch as Yahoo Screen (they then went one step further, taking down all user-uploaded content in March of 2011).

Yahoo screen

In 2011, Yahoo Screen officially relaunched, including on-demand streaming for a variety of entertainment choices (from TV shows to movies to webisodes) and a steadily revolving homepage that places an emphasis on fresh material and viral videos. The relaunch also included the advent of original programming — including eight shows that range from comedy series Burning Love (which was eventually syndicated to E!) to Paul Feig’s Other Space (which was ordered earlier this year and has yet to premiere) – a lineup that Community will now join. It’s a coup for the site, as Community is undoubtedly the best-known series that they have ever produced, and will surely bring plenty more attention to their site in general and their originally programming in particular.

You can give the site a look — as of now, it’s rife with movie trailers, special spotlights on World Cup action, an entire section for “Awesome Animals” (aww) and channels for programs like Saturday Night Live and stations like Comedy Central. It’s certainly a kitschy and forward-thinking space for the cult show to appear, though it remains to be seen if fans (even the rabid Community kind) will make the jump to online series-watching.

yahoo screens

The online video site has now ordered thirteen episodes of the show — which they happily describe as “a smart, exuberant comedy that is consistently ranked as one of the most inventive and original half-hours on television. This ensemble comedy centers around a tight-knit group of friends who all met at what is possibly the world’s worst educational institution – Greendale Community College” — to air later this fall.

Creator Dan Harmon remarked on the news, “I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo…I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!”

Zack Van Amburg, president of programming and production for Sony Pictures Television piped in, “The fans spoke and we listened. Thanks to Yahoo, and the amazing team that makes Community great, we’ve avoided the Darkest Timeline yet again and plan to deliver a fantastic season.”

Harmon will, of course, return for the new season, and the cast (including Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs and Alison Brie) are also expected to continue their work on the show.

Here's How 'Louie' Lands Such Amazing Guest Stars

Louie CK Jerry Seinfeld

FX's "Louie" starring comedian Louis C.K.  frequently has A-list celebrities like Jerry Seinfeld, Jeremy Renner, Ricky Gervais, and tons of comedians guest-starring in bit and larger roles on the show.

Often it's as easy as Louis calling up his friends from the Comedy Cellar to come down to set, "Louie" casting director Gayle Keller tells Business Insider.

"I don’t think I’ve ever auditioned any of his comedian friends," says Keller. "He will just say, 'Hey Gayle, I want Todd Barry on the show,' or 'This role is going to be played by Todd Berry,' or 'Robert Kelly is going to play my brother,' or 'Sarah Silverman is going to be on the show.'"

Louie Louis CK Sarah Silverman poker
"His knowledge of the comedians is even more vast than mine," says Keller. "If I bring up a comedian to him, he might say 'Oh he’s not right for this' or 'He’s right,' so I’ll come up with my own ideas, but he has such a knowledge of the comedians, differently than I do since many of them are his close friends, that he’ll just offer them the roles."

Keller says that Louis — who serves as writer, director, editor, and star of the show  will both write roles with certain comedian friends in mind and other times fill roles with comedians who he thinks would be a good fit.

"Like Doug Stanhope, who was in season three, he’s a stand-up, and Louis wrote a particular role for Doug," says Keller. "But then there'll be other times where he’ll say 'I want a comedian in this role' and ask me for ideas."

This season Oscar-nominated "Hurt Locker" actor Jeremy Renner appeared in two episodes playing a drug dealer who sells to a young Louie during flashback scenes.

jeremy renner louie Louis CKKeller says Renner was an easy get.

"Both Louis and Jeremy were in 'American Hustle' and when Louis wrote this piece, he was like, 'Jeremy Renner would be so amazing in this role,' so we reached out to his manager, got him the script, and he said he would do it."

When Jerry Seinfeld appeared on season 4 as a jerkier version of himself, Keller says it was because the two "are good friends."jerry seinfeld louie Louis CK

Oscar-winning 81-year-old actress Ellen Burstyn  who played Louie's older Hungarian neighbor, Evanka  wasn't as easy of a casting.

Ellen Burstyn Louis CK Louie"Ellen Burnstyn was interesting," Keller reveals. "That part was written in a very different way. They wanted an older woman who was Hungarian and we auditioned a lot of wonderful actors in New York, but Louis wasn’t sure if he had found her yet. So I suggested we think of well known actors we could just offer the role to, and I mentioned Ellen Burstyn [who Keller cast in 2000's "Requiem for a Dream"] and her agent said it was something she could be interested in."

"I told Louis we should just offer her the part and it changed a little bit about what he envisioned for the role, but he was always a huge fan of hers and she was fantastic so he said, 'Let’s do it. Let’s go for it.' And she said yes."

But perfecting a Hungarian accent wasn't always easy for Burstyn.

"We kind of made it work for her with the Hungarian and she helped us make that character because it’s a little bit different from the way it was originally written," explains Keller. "It’s a woman who is a little more old world in a way. Ellen brought so much life to it and she’s so vivacious and so beautiful that she elevated that character and in a different way."

As for whether any of this season's guest stars will be back next season, Keller says, "Who knows? I haven’t seen any scripts for next season."

But Keller is always keeping up with Louis, scouting comedians at local New York City clubs.

"I love comedy clubs, I love going to sketch, I love going to UCB, and the Pit," Keller says of where she finds new talent. "I try to see as many people as possible, I'm aware of all the 'SNL' people, and I try to get to know as many comics as possible because that’s the show. But anyone I bring up, he already knows who they are."

George R.R. Martin’s 2001 Loss To J.K. Rowling Is Still A Sore Subject

george r.r. martin

Thirteen years after George R.R. Martin's "A Storm of Swords" lost to J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" for Best Novel in the 2001 Hugo Awards, Martin's fans and perhaps Martin himself are still bitter.

An old quote from Martin regarding the loss that appeared on a fan site recently went crazy on Reddit:

"Eat your heart out, Rowling," Martin wrote. "Maybe you have billions of dollars and my Hugo, but you don't have readers like these."

In 2012, Martin, author of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series (adapted for HBO as "Game of Thrones"), elaborated on his feelings. "I wish I have beaten her, what can I say! I would have liked to win that award and I don't think Rowling cares much about it," Martin told the blog Adria's News. "And she didn't send anyone to accept the award, which is certainly annoying."

Posted by Reddit user gorgagon, the comment spurred a fierce debate generating more than 1,800 comments. Some called Martin's attitude presumptuous.

Screen Shot 2014 07 01 at 1.36.37 PMScreen Shot 2014 07 01 at 1.45.59 PM

But many stood up for him, like Reddit user greym84:

He's not being petty here. Rowling has outright disowned the fantasy genre, pretending her obvious fantasy series wasn't really fantasy, as if she's some kind of transcendental author too good for a Hugo award, which she never bothered to accept. ... So GRRM as a die hard SFF [science fiction and fantasy] writer, for decades on end, loses a SFF-specific award to a person who has spurned the genre and doesn't even care about the reward. ... So he takes a jab at Rowling, but the main point is to acknowledge that he doesn't write for awards, but for his fans. As for Rowling, I love Harry Potter and I think she's overall a decent person. I just think she was grossly out of line on this issue and GRRM, as a major voice in SFF, was well within his rights to acknowledge his readers at her expense.

For her part, Rowling may not care or even be aware of Martin's criticisms, since she has said in the past that she doesn't read fantasy or science fiction

Interestingly, Martin doesn't even list his 2001 Hugo nomination for Best Novel on his website, although he lists his 2006 and 2012 Hugo Best Novel nominations for the next two books in his series (which he lost to different authors). Perhaps his loss to Rowling was more upsetting than his loss to subsequent authors, as his comments would suggest. And maybe Martin had high expectations in 2001 because he had already won Hugo awards in 1979 and 1997 for Best Novelette, Short Story, and Novella — and since by most accounts "A Storm Of Swords" is the best book of his epic series.

Screen Shot 2014 07 01 at 1.26.31 PMSeparate from his comments about the Hugo award, Martin has indicated that he is not particularly fond of "Harry Potter." In 2008, he rejoiced that President Obama collects Spider-Man and Conan the Barbarian comics. "That's so cool that I'm willing to forgive him for being a Harry Potter fan,"wrote Martin in his LiveJournal

His grudge may have led him to poke fun at "Harry Potter" within the pages of the next book in his series, "A Feast for Crows,"The Wire reported. In a passage of that book, Martin described a fight between the female knight Brienne of Tarth and two male knights. "She had ridden over Harry Sawyer and broken Robin Potter's helm, giving him a nasty scar," Martin wrote.

Aside from the obvious reference to Harry Potter by combining those names, Martin took care to mention one of the knights received a scar on his head after she broke his helmet. That brings to mind the forehead scar that distinguishes Rowling's Harry Potter.

But Martin has also made it clear that he respects Rowling for her valuable contributions to the fantasy genre. "[S]he has done great stuff for fantasy and many of my readers are people who started with Harry Potter; they've grown up and she got them to reading, she got them to fantasy," he told Adria's News. "J.K. Rowling has grown up an entire generation of children into the field and for that I applaud her."

24 million copies of "A Song of Ice and Fire" books had been sold in North America by Random's Bantam Books as of September 2o13, including print, digital, and audio formats, Reuters reported.

As popular as the series is, however, its sales are dwarfed by the "Harry Potter" books, which had sold 450 million copies by mid-2011, publishers Bloomsbury in Britain and Scholastic in the United States told the BBC.

Netflix is currently hiring a "tagger" to work on facilitating the company's famous recommendation engine for movies and TV shows.

In short, you'd watch a piece of media, then feed the system descriptive tags about it so that it can figure out when and why to recommend it to other potential viewers.

It's a job to watch Netflix all day, then describe what you just watched.

The job description was first noticed by TechRadar:

Successful applicants will be responsible for watching and analyzing films and TV programmes that will be streaming on Netflix in the future. The tagger will deconstruct the films and programmes and describe them using objective tags.

This "tagging process" is the first stage of the Netflix recommendation system and works in concert with advanced algorithms that generate highly personalized suggestions for every one of Netflix's nearly 50 million members, offering them an individualized set of titles matching their tastes. Other responsibilities may also include acting as a UK/IE cultural consultant, highlighting UK/IE cultural specificity and taste preferences.

Best part is that it's a geographically agnostic position:

The role will offer flexible hours working from home and would suit those with a passion for films and TV programmes, as evidenced by a degree in film or film history and/or experience directing, screening writing or filmmaking. Applicants with analysis experience (e.g. as a critic or work in development) would also be well suited.

'The Walking Dead' Confirms A Fan-Favorite Villain Is Coming To The Show

rick grimes amc walking deadWarning: If you do not read "The Walking Dead" comic series, there are spoilers ahead.

A huge villain from "The Walking Dead" will be joining the series soon.

Sunday night, AMC aired a one-hour special of "The Talking Dead," the usual aftershow companion to "The Walking Dead," giving a preview of the show's upcoming season five this fall.

Near the end of the special, host Chris Hardwick asked executive producer Scott Gimple about his favorite rumor he has heard for the series and he briefly slipped up about a very popular character making an entrance soon.

"The recent one [rumor] that Jon Hamm was going to play Negan, who is a character coming up, a villain," said Gimple.

With fangirl Aisha Tyler sitting right next to him, Gimple quickly added "coming up eventually."

Earlier this year, it was reported "The Walking Dead" series creator Robert Kirkman said "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm would be perfect for the role of fan-favorite villain Negan in the future of the series.

Comic fans know Negan is a character who comes in and radically changes the dynamic of the group.

negan the walking deadHowever, there's just one slight problem that could prevent Negan's appearance on the show from feeling authentic.

Hardwick pointed out that "every other word out of his mouth is the 'f' word.'"

Negan's unabashedly vulgar vernacular defines his character so it will be an interesting one to see translated onto the small screen.

Gimple joked that viewers should reach out to their cable providers and make AMC a paid network.

Kirkman has previously said he has discussed casting Negan on the series with Gimple; however, we shouldn't expect to see him in the near future.

"I wouldn’t expect Negan too terribly soon, although he is definitely in the plan," Kirkman told MTV News. "It’s a 99% lock that he’s going to be in the show eventually, so be on the lookout for that."

Right now, Gimple says that all 16 episodes for season five are relatively figured out.

The first trailer for "The Walking Dead" season five will premiere Friday, July 25, at San Diego Comic Con.

'Doctor Who' Scripts Leak Online And Now The BBC Is Asking Fans Not To Spoil The Show

doctor who season 8Scripts for Peter Capaldi’s brand new Doctor Who season have leaked online. The BBC officially announced the news on Monday, noting that five scripts from the upcoming Season 8 have officially reached the masses on the Internet. So, if you’ve seen any spoilers for the upcoming Season 8 online, it’s likely that you know what’s coming. Now, the BBC is imploring fans of Doctor Who who have seen the secrets to keep them quiet until the episodes in question air.

Doctor Who is expected to hit the schedule on August 23. The BBC was gearing up for the Latin American premiere of Season 8, and according to the Radio Times, the scripts had been sent to Miami, Fl where the Latin American headquarters of the BBC are housed. The scripts were sent to that location to be translated, but somehow they got into the wrong hands and were leaked online. Bleeding Cool is noting that the five scripts that were leaked are for the episodes “Deep Breath” by Steven Moffat, “Into the Dalek” by Phil Ford, “Robots of Sherwood” by Mark Gatiss, “Listen” by Steven Moffat and “Time Heist” by Steve Thompson.

If you want to be spoiled ahead of time, you can still find the scripts online. However, seeing a script isn’t quite the same as actually seeing a finished TV product, and August 23 is right around the corner. With all of that in mind, it might simply be better to wait for the new episodes to air, and see how Peter Capaldi holds up as the 12th Time Lord. At least that’s what the BBC is hoping. In a statement, the network thanked fans for their commitment to the series and asked them to keep the facts about the upcoming episodes to themselves.

“We would like to make a plea to anyone who might have any of this material and spoilers associated with it not to share it with a wider audience so that everyone can enjoy the show as it should be seen when it launches. We know only too well that Doctor Who fans are the best in the world and we thank them for their help with this and their continued loyalty."

In addition, the BBC says it is looking into the security issue to make certain that leaks such as this one do not happen in the future.

“BBC Worldwide is currently investigating a security issue around Doctor Who Series 8 where unfinished material has inadvertently been made public,” the statement begins. “We deeply regret this and apologise to all the show’s fans, the BBC and the cast and crew who have worked tirelessly making the series.”

If you want to check out some non-spoilery new facts about Season 8, the network has already released teasers and trailers for the brand new episodes, as well as a full look at Peter Capaldi’s costume. In the United States, Doctor Who will premiere on BBC America on August 23 at 8 p.m. ET.

The 17 Biggest Snubs And Surprises From Today's Emmy Nominations

the americans keri russellThe nominations for the 66th Primetime Emmys were announced Thursday morning and not everyone is happy.

Netflix stunned again, receiving more than double of last year's nominations pushing out comedies like "Brooklyn Nine Nine" and "Parks and Recreation" and dramas including "The Good Wife" and "Homeland" from receiving nods.

While BBC's "Sherlock" and HBO's "True Detective" received their fair share of praise, a lot of favorites went unrecognized.

Snub: Sure, Julianna Margulies received her nod, but "The Good Wife" gets shut out of the drama category despite a huge twist this past season.

Surprise: Netflix was nominated for an outstanding 31 Emmys between "House of Cards,""Orange is the New Black," and Ricky Gervais' "Derrick." Last year, the streaming service picked up 14 noms.

Snub: Despite announcing the nominees, Mindy Kaling didn't receive a nod herself.

Emmys Give David Letterman A Rude Sendoff: 0 Nominations

David Letterman

Emmy voters had a succinct message for David Letterman, who announced in April that he would be retiring from “The Late Show With David Letterman” after 33 years in late night:

Goodbye.

Letterman's show, which won five consecutive Outstanding Variety Series Emmys between 1998 and 2002, did not receive a single nomination on Thursday.

Nothing for Dave. Nothing for his writers. Nothing for his director or his cameramen or his art directors, who have helped Letterman's productions garner 110 nominations and 14 wins over the years.

Nothing at all.

The last time Letterman's show didn't receive a single nomination was 1983, the second year of his run on NBC's “Late Night With David Letterman.”  Since then, “Late Night” and its successor, CBS's “The Late Show” have been nominated every year, although 2010 was the last time Letterman made it into the marquee Outstanding Variety Series category.

He also co-hosted the Emmys in 1986 with “Cheers” star Shelley Long.

Letterman's old rival Jay Leno was treated almost as rudely, landing a single nomination for the web series “Jay Leno‘s Garage” but nothing for his final year as host of “The Tonight Show.”

Meanwhile, the version of the show hosted by Leno's successor, Jimmy Fallon, grabbed five nominations, including Outstanding Variety Series. Leno hadn't been nominated in that category since 2003.

While this was the final opportunity for Emmy voters to magnanimously bid Jay farewell, there's one more chance for Dave at next year's Emmys. For now, though, the Television Academy is offering him a rude sendoff instead of some nice parting gifts.

'Game Of Thrones' Creators: 'We Made A Bunch Of Mistakes' In The Premiere Episode

daenarys game of thrones emilia clarke

"Game of Thrones" was just nominated for 19 Emmys and it's not difficult to see why.

The HBO series is now the most-watched show in the network's history. It recently surpassed "The Sopranos" with an average of 18.4 million viewers per episode. However, there was a time the creators of the show feared the series may not come together.

On an episode of "The Writers Room," a Sundance series which looks at the making of popular shows, co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss recalled receiving poor feedback after screening the pilot for three friends who were also writers.

d b weiss david benioff

"We made a huge number of mistakes in the original pilot," said Benioff. "We screened the initial pilot for three of our friends ... and got to the end and there was just dead silence in the room. One of our friends kind of shakes his head and says, 'You guys have a massive problem.' It was one of the worst experiences, work wise, in my life."

One problem the duo said they had was providing at least 50 minutes for each episode. Weiss said they had one episode that originally clocked in at 39 minutes.

"We were 93 minutes short for the entire season so we had this two week crunch," said Benioff.

In order to fill the time gap, the creators focused on exploring character-driven storylines, while ensuring they connected with audiences.

Benioff explained one of the key mistakes happens in the last scene of the first episode. Brother and sister Cersei and Jaime Lannister are caught having sex by a child causing Jaime to push him out a window. In the initial cut, it was never made clear the Lannisters were related, making their relationship incestuous.

"Certain relationships that we thought were obvious were not at all obvious to an audience," said Benicoft.

game of thrones jaime cersei season 4

"There wasn't ever any point at which you were told explicitly, and that's the entire point of the scene," added Weiss.

Benioff says when HBO decided to pick up the pilot episode that despite the mistakes and problems, the two had the chance to rewrite and reshoot much of the premiere episode.

The rest is history.

HBO Completely Blew Its Chance To Air ‘Breaking Bad’

breaking bad jesse walt

“Breaking Bad” is making its final Emmy run this August.

The AMC series was just nominated for 16 awards. Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul are deservingly up for their fourth and third Emmy awards, respectively.

Now, It’s weird to imagine the show on any other network. It helped solidify the network as more than a channel that syndicated classic movies like “The Shawshank Redemption” repeatedly.

However, before the show landed on AMC, there was a time it was being shopped around to other networks.

You may have heard the stories of how FX or TNT passed on the series.

According to EW, FX feared the series was too similar to all of its other shows with male antiheroes. “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan has said two eager TNT executives loved the story pitch about a middle-aged teacher diagnosed with cancer and turning to a life of crime, but they feared getting fired from their jobs over the meth storyline and wanted to change Walter White into a counterfeiter. So much for knowing drama.

The most important story in understanding how competitive this year’s Emmy’s drama race is knowing how HBO blew its chance to air what many call one of the best shows to have ever aired on TV.

In a 2011 interview with EmmyTVLegends.org, Gilligan recalled his pitch meeting as the "worst meeting I’ve ever had."

"The trouble with Hollywood — movies and TV — is people will leave you dangling on the end of a meat hook for days or weeks or months on end. That happened at HBO,” said Gilligan. “Like the worst meeting I ever had vs. the TNT meeting … and it was only like a day apart.”

“The woman we're pitching to could not have been less interested — not even in my story, but about whether I actually lived or died,” added Gilligan.

When he got to the end of the pitch, he said this was her reaction:

vince gilligan breaking bad hbo

“My agents could never even get her on the phone afterward to even say no,” said Gilligan.

The irony, is that now, in its final opportunity to take home Emmy gold “Breaking Bad” has to beat HBO’s breakout hit “True Detective,” a series that has some questioning whether it should have been labeled a drama instead of a miniseries, to win.

The entire interview with Gilligan is great. If you're a fan of the series, you should check it out.

Gilligan begins discussing the HBO pitch after the four-minute mark.
