'Breaking Bad' Actress Anna Gunn Explains Why Fans Hate Her Character, Skyler

$

skyler breaking badIf you watch AMC's hit series "Breaking Bad" you probably aren't a huge fan of Walter White's wife Skyler (Anna Gunn).

Since season one, fans have seen her as a nagging, pestering, cheating wife who gets in the way of Walt trying to run a successful meth business.

In a New York Times op-ed, Gunn explains how it's normal for the viewer to empathize with and root for Walt since he's the show's protagonist. Since her reactions go against Walt, she's easily seen as a foe even though she's acing in a rational manner.

Here's part of her response to the message board haters:

"As an actress, I realize that viewers are entitled to have whatever feelings they want about the characters they watch. But as a human being, I’m concerned that so many people react to Skyler with such venom. Could it be that they can’t stand a woman who won’t suffer silently or “stand by her man”? That they despise her because she won’t back down or give up? Or because she is, in fact, Walter’s equal?"

In the end, Gunn decided it comes down to gender.

"But I finally realized that most people’s hatred of Skyler had little to do with me and a lot to do with their own perception of women and wives. Because Skyler didn’t conform to a comfortable ideal of the archetypical female, she had become a kind of Rorschach test for society, a measure of our attitudes toward gender."

8 Revelations About The Kanye West Sitcom That Never Happened

Kanye West

HBO didn't let "Curb Your Enthusiasm" producer Larry Charles finish, but Kanye West almost had one of the best sitcoms of all time.

Kidding, of course.

Before Kanye stole the mic from Taylor Swift, had a baby with Kim Kardashian, or adopted a god complex, he was to star in a HBO's improvisation-driven sitcom inspired by his life and posse.

After the network didn't pick up the pilot, writer and producer Larry Charles told ComingSoon.net in 2008 he thought the series was "too hard-core" for the network.

"HBO doesn't have a good track record when it comes to black shows, and I felt like that may have had something to do with it also," Charles said. "I don't see a lot of shows about that experience at all. This was very entertaining and we showed it to a lot of people. People gave it a very good response, and it seems to be on the shelf right now."

Last month, footage for the series hit the Internet and everyone was able to get a glimpse of what a Kanye-centered show may have been like.

The cast included Kym Whitley as Kanye's mom Donda, J.B. Smoove as his manager, Wyatt Cenac as Kanye's cousin, rapper GLC as his bodyguard, and Kanye's real-life assistant, Don C., as himself.

The cast and producer Larry Charles, whose credits include "Seinfeld,""Entourage," and "Curb Your Enthusiasm, spoke with TV Guide about the pilot's plot and Kanye's acting chops.

Here's what we learned about the Kanye West sitcom that almost was:

1. Kanye West told Larry Charles, the executive producer of "Curb Your Enthusiasm," that he was " the black Larry David."

"He started telling me these stories about how often he puts his food in his mouth," Charles said. "How he doesn't really want to be that way, he just sort of is that way."

2. HBO gave producers a shoestring budget of $400,000 and five days to shoot the pilot.

"It wasn't like they were super excited," Charles said of HBO.

3. Kym Whitley vacationed on a cruise with Dondra West so she could accurately portray Yeezy's mom.

"I got close to his mother."

4. Producers were nervous the show would be "black 'Curb Your Enthusiasm.'"

"I wanted to give it a structure and a vibe that was more true to Kanye and his world than the 'Curb' style," Charles said. "There [were] a lot of people going around talking and overlapping. Because that's Kanye's world, that kind of barely contained chaos."

5. Kanye would let other people deliver the punch line.

"In the way 'Seinfeld' was smart about this and Jack Benny was smart about this," Charles said, "he was not afraid to have the people around him be really funny and be a straight man for them."

6. But he actually was funny.

"I think the pain is where the humor comes from," Charles said. "He's not funny in the same way that Larry David's funny or JB Smoove is funny. But he's a great foil."

7. One episode might have addressed the Taylor Swift debacle.

"The hope was that we'd follow him around, be able to shoot a lot of verite stuff like at awards shows, and pick that up and then draw stories from around that," Charles said. "Blur that line between the fiction and reality."

8. The pilot ends with Kanye saying the wrong thing to a Make-A-Wish Foundation kid.

When asked to tape a video greeting for the organization, and he says, "Yo, whattup to all the dying kids. I know y'all my dawgs. And you know, all dogs go to heaven!"

FOX Cancels Kris Jenner's Talk Show [REPORT]

kris jennerKris Jenner has been told by FOX executives that her six-week trial run at being a talk show host will be just that —  it’s not coming back for a second run.

The mother-of-six turned manager was recently told, “There is no chance the talk show is going to get a green light from FOX. The ratings were averaging an abysmal 0.8 and advertisers were less than enthusiastic about it.”

“Kris did get a ratings bump for her last show when Kanye West revealed the first baby pic of daughter, North West, with Kim, but that was a one time shot in the arm and it wouldn’t be indicative of what the ratings trend would be,” the source close to the production told RadarOnline.com.

The revelation about Jenner’s demise leaves few standing in the crowded field of daytime talkers, includingKatie CouricSteve Harvey, as well as fall hopefuls Queen Latifah and Bethenny Frankel.

Jeff Probst and Ricki Lake were also cancelled after one season.

“It’s a very crowded market and Kris didn’t do anything to set herself apart from the field. Believe it or not, most of America doesn’t want to hear about the Kardashian’s for an hour everyday,” the source revealed.

FOX’s panel-format talk show The Real — which, like Kris, launched its test run on July 15 — is “expected to be picked up” after it edged out Kris in the key female demographics.

FOX isn’t expected to make a formal announcement for a few weeks, out of respect to current situation engulfing the family—the marital crisis of Khloe Kardashian and husband Lamar Odom.

“It will be announced in a low key fashion, probably on a Friday afternoon so it won’t generate a ton of negative press for Kris,” the insider added.

A source close to Jenner said: “There have been absolutely no discussions about this and FOX and Kris will not know for at least another month whether or not the show is coming back.”

The 21 Highest Paid TV Hosts [Ranked]

kelly ripa

How does Jon Stewart's paycheck compare to that of morning hosts Kelly Ripa or Matt Lauer?

TV Guide has rolled out its annual list of television's highest-paid stars.

From television actors and reality celebrities to daytime and late-night personalities, the four-page report gives a broad look at more than 160 salaries according to numbers from television executives and industry insiders.

To make sense of all the numbers, we've ranked the highest-paid daytime, primetime, and news host salaries.

Maury Povitch's daytime infamous "You are not the father!" segments have led him to receive a paycheck higher than journalists Ann Curry, Anderson Cooper, and Diane Sawyer.

While Jay Leno and David Letterman once commanded the highest salaries on late night, Viacom is reportedly pouring even more money into "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart.

21. Ann Curry: $5 million

After Curry was ousted from the "Today" show last summer, she was offered a position as foreign correspondent for the network that would give her $5 million a year.

20. Queen Latifah: $5-$10 million

Starting September 16, "The Queen Latifah Show" will air daily on CBS. The syndicated program comes from Will Smith's production company, Overbrook Entertainment and Sony Pictures TV.

19. Robin Roberts: $6 million

The "Good Morning America" co-host returned to the show in February after a public battle with myelodysplastic syndrome. Roberts has been a co-anchor since May 2005. She started working on the program June 1995.

'Breaking Bad' Fans Flock To Mexican Restaurant Where Walter White Feuded With Brother-In-Law

$

marie hank breaking bad

The Mexican restaurant that factored into last Sunday's "Breaking Bad," reports a surge in orders for tableside guacamole since the appetizer was prominently featured on the AMC drama.

Garduno's' dip was a recurring punchline during an excruciatingly tense exchange that found meth-dealer Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and his wife (Anna Gunn) involved in a tense standoff with his brother-in-law, a DEA agent named Hank Schrader (Dean Norris). As tempers flared, a Garduno's waiter keeps butting in at inopportune times to talk up the restaurant's guacamole.

His sales pitch may not have worked on the Whites, but it has on customers.

Thirty percent of guests usually order guacamole, but Corporate General Manager Warren Gaustad told TheWrap that the number has surged to 35 percent -- with many visitors specifically referencing "Breaking Bad" as the reason for their selection.

There's also been an influx of "Breaking Bad" tourists looking to see where the episode was shot.

"It's been pretty funny," Gaustad said. "We've had a lot of people coming in to take pictures and wanting to sit at the table where the characters sat."

And don't worry -- there are no hard feelings about having the restaurant be a source of jokes, even if Gaustad argues his waiters aren't usually overly solicitous.

"The server was a little cheesy, but I laughed when I watched it," Gaustad.

breaking bad walter white mexican restaurantThe scene was shot over a long January day at Garduno's' Winrock Mall location in Albuquerque, N.M., with the restaurant's staff playing busboys and servers (but not the guacamole-pushing waiter, who was a professional actor). In addition to Cranston, Gunn, Norris and Betsy Brandt (who plays Marie Schrader), filming brought several celebrity audience members.

Gaustad said Aaron Paul, who play's White's partner Jesse Pinkman, stopped by for an hour even though he wasn't in the scene and talked to the restaurant's staff. There was also a "Malcolm in the Middle" reunion of sorts, as Jane Kaczmarek, the actress who played Cranston's wife on the Fox sitcom, watched filming from the restaurant's bar with her son.

The brush with celebrity was no big deal for Albuquerque residents, who are accustomed to seeing Cranston and crew, given that the show has been set in the city for all of its five critically acclaimed seasons.

"This is a local show," Gaustad said. "We always expect 'Breaking Bad' to be shooting somewhere around the city."

As good as that guacamole is, Gaustad said his favorite item is the Red Carne Adovada -- pork marinated in red chili sauce -- and it could be the perfect meal the next time the Whites and Schraders decide to break bread.

Here's How Much Aaron Paul And Bryan Cranston Earn For 'Breaking Bad'

$

gus jesse breaking bad

"Breaking Bad" is without a doubt one of the best shows to have ever been on TV.

As the final gut-wrenching episodes of the AMC series are rolling out, you've probably wondered how much the show's biggest stars earn as the biggest meth dealers in New Mexico.

Earlier this month, TV Guide released its annual salary report of television actors, hosts, and personalities.

Among the 160+ salaries reported were those of Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, the two main stars of "Breaking Bad."

How much do Cranston and Paul earn per episode as meth cooks?

Cranston takes home a cool $225,000 per  episode, while Paul earns $150,000. (Not bad for someone who was originally supposed to be killed off at the end of season one.)

That puts Cranston's salary for the final eight episodes of the series at $1.8 million. Paul would take home $1.2 million.

For a comparison, Cranston is making more as much as what each of the "How I Met Your Mother" cast members earns ($225,000) and almost as much as Damian Lewis on Showtime's "Homeland" (also $250,000).

Paul is earning as much as Peter Dinklage earns for his role on HBO's "Game of Thrones" per episode and more than that of "Elementary" star Lucy Liu ($130,000).

In total, season 5 has 16 episodes. Provided Cranston and Paul's salary information is the same for the first eight episodes, that would put Cranston at $3.6 million for the entire final season of "Breaking Bad" while his co-star Paul would make a total of $2.4 million.

We're sure you're still soaking in everything that happened from this week's episode, but here's the preview for next week.

Unlike previous weeks, AMC actually premiered the promo right after tonight's episode rather than wait until an hour later after "Low Winter Sun."

Next week's episode of "Breaking Bad" is called "To'hajiilee." The title is a reference to an Indian Reservation in New Mexico, west of Albuquerque where the series takes place.

Aaron Paul Deserves Another Emmy For This Week's Episode Of 'Breaking Bad'

$

jesse pinkman breaking badWarning: There are major spoilers ahead!

Everyone is talking about Aaron Paul's Emmy-worthy emotional performance on last night's episode of "Breaking Bad."

Paul plays Jesse Pinkman, a broken drug addict on the AMC series, who is grappling with the fact that his long-time drug partner and former chemistry teacher Walter White (Bryan Cranston) has betrayed him multiple times.

Between his character finally standing up against "that a--hole" Mr. White, deciding to work with Hank, and then burst out in traditional paranoid Pinkman fashion for no reason at the end of the episode, the man never stopped looking like a scared, broken, desperate puppy the entire time and it was brilliant.

The first time we see him in Season 5, episode 12 "Rabid Dog," the emotion on his face is so entirely raw, there is no doubt in our mind that this is a broken man who has been through the wringer.

We knew this was going to be an intense episode. Last week, Pinkman headed over to Walter White's house with the intent of burning it down.

The moments when Paul bursts out are some of the hardest and best moments on television to watch because we empathize with this young man who has been manipulated by someone who he deeply trusted.

This is a man who you can't help but feel empathy for because there are so many levels of manipulation going on that Jesse is almost right to be paranoid.

He's playing Mr. White. Mr. White is playing him. On top of that, nearly everyone else — Saul, Skyler, and Hank — think Pinkman may be better off dead.

The only man sort of on his side is the one man he can't trust (Mr. White), and by the end of the episode, Pinkman even drives him away to the point that Walt finally takes out a hit on him.

Paul has already won two Primetime Emmys in 2010 and 2012 for his role on the show.

Throughout the entire episode, many thought Paul deserved his next Emmy win for his exceptional performance. It was all that many on Twitter couldn't stop talking about.

Others thought Dean Norris (who plays Hank) also deserved an Emmy.

There's A 'Breaking Bad' Musical And It's Hilarious

breaking bad musical "Walter White and the Amazing Blue Crystal Meth" ucb

"Walter White and the Amazing Blue Crystal Meth" is an hour-long musical recapping the first five seasons of "Breaking Bad."

Great news: you can watch the entire thing on YouTube.

For fans of the series, it features a song and dance number naming the ingredients of crystal meth and Jesse Pinkman dropping the B-word a lot.

The rock opera was performed at the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) Los Angeles earlier this summer. UCB is a national ring of comedy theaters that host improv, stand-up, sketch, and variety shows.

UCB's Jackie Johnson told Business Insider that the musical started as a joke.

Her co-writer Nadia Osman tweeted about how great "Breaking Bad" would be as a musical and Johnson responded that they should write one.

"We are basically two writers/improvisers/comedians who love the show and wanted to pay it tribute in the best way we know how, which is musical parody," Osman said. "Every member of the cast is also a huge fan, so it was just a big love fest."

Just in case, Johnson said she made sure every cast member was caught up on the show before reading the script.

The musical's framework was inspired by Johnson's high school drama production.

"I was in the chorus of 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat' in high school and thought that show would be a fun blueprint to tell Walt's tale," Johnson said. "He takes a journey and meets all these colorful characters along the way, each with their own style of song."

Can you guess Pinkman's genre?

Watch the hilarious musical below. Spoiler alert.

walt breaking bad shock phoneWarning: If you are not caught up, major spoilers follow.

It's safe to say the final 20-25 minutes of the latest episode of "Breaking Bad" were not only some of the most intense moments of the series, but also some of the most intense minutes of television.

Immediately following the episode, it was all any fan was talking about online.

Since the series' return last month, every episode has been intense, however, tonight the entire episode had us on edge. The deeper the episode progressed, the farther our stomachs recoiled into our chests.

Don't read any further if you haven't watched the latest episode.

Jesse turns the tables on Walt (Bryan Cranston) when he lures him out to the desert and gets him to unknowingly confess his crimes on tape for his DEA brother-in-law Hank (Dean Norris).

While it appears Jesse and Hank have the upper hand, fans know you should never expect a happy ending on "Breaking Bad."

Thinking only Jesse is after him, Walt calls Todd (Jesse Plemons) and his uncles to come out and off his former partner. Once Walt finds out Hank and his partner are also there, he tries to call the crew off, but it's too late.

Todd and his uncles show up at the end of the episode and it's an all-out gun fight between the DEA officers and the family.

todd uncles breaking badNow, Jesse's hiding out in a Chrysler 300 and Hank and his partner Gomey are firing from behind a vehicle. Who's going to live? Who's going to die? We won't know until next week because the episode cut off in the middle of the gun fire! Seriously!

Though we knew Todd's uncles would be trouble, everyone was floored by the radical turn of events.

Even our own Joe Weisenthal couldn't stand it.

The episode also had celebrities on edge.

Diehard fans will remember Aaron Paul first teased this episode on Twitter back in January. He reacted the same way.

Paul promises the episodes will continue to only get more intense.

tina fey amy poehler saturday night live snl sarah palin

Tina Fey is returning to "Saturday Night Live,""don't cha' know?"

The former Weekend Update anchor and Sarah Palin impersonator will host the 39th season opener on September 28.

It's her fourth time hosting since she left the show in 2006.

Fey's familiar face will help balance out the crop of "SNL" newbies, replacing leading men Jason Sudeikis, Fred Armisen, and Bill Hader. Head writer Seth Meyers is slated to depart in the fall, when he takes over Jimmy Fallon's "Late Night" desk.

The celebrities picked to host the following two episodes are pure ratings bait — having made unflattering headlines recently.

Fresh off her cringeworthy MTV Video Music Awards performance, Miley Cyrus tackles both the hosting and musical guest gigs on October 5.

Bruce Willis, who bailed on "Expendables 2,"much to the dismay of co-star Sylvester Stallone, will host for the second time on October 12. Katy Perry is the musical guest.

Fey will be joined by musical guest Arcade Fire, whose first single off the highly anticipated "Reflektor" album drops Monday night.

Fingers crossed Sarah Palin does something silly before the end of the month to warrant one of Fey's inimitable impressions.

Kimmel announced on the show Monday night: "To the conspiracy theorists on the Internet who thought it was fake, you were right."

 Here's the original video:
