George R.R. Martin says HBO may finish 'Game of Thrones' before he does

George R.R. Martin has resigned himself to the possibility that HBO's "Game of Thrones" will finish its run before he finishes the final book.

“Anything is possible,” Martin told GeekWire at the Sasquan science-fiction convention in Spokane, Washington.

Martin read a chapter from “The Winds of Winter,” the upcoming sixth book in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels "Game of Thrones" is based on. The novels are expected to end with the seventh book (though some say it'll end with an eighth book).

game of thrones_jon snow_dead finaleEarlier this month, HBO's highest-ranking programming executive said that the network plans for the series to end after its eighth season. Already, HBO has outpaced the books in its fifth season.

“The show is moving forward like a locomotive, or sometimes a jet locomotive,” Martin said. “They’re writing 60-page scripts, I’m writing 1,500-page novels. So who the hell knows?"

Martin said that the thought of the series beating his books previously bothered him, but he has since come to accept that possibility.

"Worrying about it isn’t going to change it one way or another," he said. "I still sit down at the typewriter, and I have to write the next scene and the next sentence … I’m just going to tell my story, and they’re telling their story and adapting my books, and we shall see.”

While "The Winds of Winter" doesn't have a publish date yet, HBO is currently shooting the sixth season of "Game of Thrones" with a likely April 2016 return.

Marvel and ABC haven't abandoned a series featuring Mockingbird, played by Adrienne Palicki.

Although plans for the "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD" spinoff, titled "Marvel's Most Wanted," were abandoned last May, Variety reported that Marvel and ABC are now very close to tying down a pilot order for the series.

According to the site, the project is no longer considered a "SHIELD" spinoff. Instead, it will follow the adventures of popular "SHIELD" characters Bobbi Morse aka Mockingbird (Palicki) and Lance Hunter (Nick Blood).

agents shield bobbi hunterAlso, ABC reportedly hasn't yet decided how the series will be introduced to viewers -- as a standalone pilot or as an episode of "SHIELD."

"SHIELD" producers Jeffrey Bell and Paul Zbyszewski, who co-created the project for Marvel and ABC Studios, are co-writing the pilot. If the series gets a green light, they will serve as showrunners and executive producers along with Marvel’s head of television Jeph Loeb.

"Marvel's Most Wanted" would join ABC's growing stable of Marvel series, including "SHIELD,""Agent Carter," and a very secretive project from "American Crime" creator and "12 Years a Slave" writer John Ridley.

And ABC Studios representative told Business Insider she couldn't confirm the pilot order.

Fear the walking dead premiere cast amc

Don't expect "Walking Dead" crossover episodes, a character you already know, or even the zombies to look the same on AMC's "Fear the Walking Dead."

Producers aimed to create a true standalone story with the new series.

"'Fear the Walking Dead' is truly a standalone series, a new story set in a new location, East LA, just as it's on the brink of the apocalypse," AMC President, Charlie Collier, said during the Television Critics Association press tour last month.

"Fear the Walking Dead" premieres Sunday, August 23 at 9 p.m. on AMC.

Here are five ways it won't be like its predecessor, "The Walking Dead."

MORE: The "Fear the Walking Dead" showrunner tells us what 3 movies inspired the new show

1. Location

"FTWD" takes place in East LA, California rather than Atlanta and Virginia like "TWD." The distance certainly influences a lot, especially the phrases they use.

"We do have [zombies], we call them infected,""FTWD's" showrunner said at TCA. "We don't call them walkers. We're coming up with as much cool West Coast verbiage as we can."

2. Time

What happened during Rick Grimes coma? How did the zombie apocalypse go down? Those questions will be answered on "FTWD."

"None of us saw what was happening as Rick lay in that hospital bed," AMC president Charlie Collier said at TCA. "We didn't get to watch the world turn. Well, that is, until now. 'Fear the Walking Dead' takes us inside the earliest moments of the zombie apocalypse and allows us to watch as civilization is upended and everything goes so very wrong."

3. They're just average people

The people of "FTWD" are just living their lives. As the madness in the city grows, they're just trying to keep their family safe.

"Unlike Rick and his crew, the folks we'll meet on 'Fear' are not seasoned survivors," AMC boss Charlie Collier said at TCA. "They're a diverse group witnessing the implosion of society at its breaking point. They're regular people trying to manage their complicated lives, including divorce and blended families, children with drug addictions, et cetera."

At just seven years old, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were already flexing their mogul muscles.

Lifetime released a new preview from its "Unauthorized Full House Story," which shows that the twin girls are making the most out of their fame from the hit comedy. (Thankfully they survived John Stamos' plot to get them fired!)

In the clip, the twins' older co-stars watch as they make an appearance on a TV talk show.

"How come they get invited on all of the talk shows?" complains Jodie Sweetin aka Stephanie Tanner (played by Jordyn Olson).

"They're kids! What do they even have to talk about," says Andrea Barber aka Kimmi Gibler (Jaime Schneider)

The twins began starring in and producing straight-to-DVD and TV movies under their company, Dualstar, in 1993. It would become a multi-million dollar business for the young girls.

They would later move into fashion design, which they continue in today. In 2007, Forbes reported their combined net worth at $100 million. Several sites now report it's $300 million.

Donald Trump 'had one bad experience' with Bill Cosby

donald trump bill cosby feud

Bill Cosby can't count Donald Trump as one of his supporters.

"I've never been a fan," Trump answered when asked by The Hollywood Reporter about the sexual assault allegations against Cosby.

"I had one bad experience with him," the real estate mogul continued. "I was on 'Letterman,' and he was following me on the show. He said, 'Oh, I want to buy you a suit.' It was nice, he bought me a suit. And then he was on [NBC's 'Today' show], and my name was mentioned, and he went absolutely crazy. And I said, 'What the hell was that all about?'"

It's possible Trump is referring to Cosby's 2011 appearance on "Today" when then-host Meredith Vieira asked the comedian how he felt about the real estate mogul's potential 2012 presidential run.

“Oh, please with Donald Trump. Take him home with you,"Cosby told Vieira.

THR_TrumpCoverHe then said of Trump's reticence to announce a presidential run: "He's full of it ... You run or shut up ... The only thing he's running is his mouth."

And there has been no love lost for Trump over the last few years.

"I was never a fan," Trump added to THR. "His humor was always, like, slow and stupid to me. I never saw it. And then he's obviously got this stuff. What amazes me is he was so quiet and then you see these depositions. What was he doing? Was he drunk? You see he admitted all this stuff on top of everything else. I think he's weird. And I never found his humor good at all. Just sit in a chair, talk very slowly? And I say to myself, 'What's this all about?'"

A representative for Cosby didn't respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

How Amazon is taking over television

$

Amazon Jeff Bezos

At first glance, it seemed like a typically iconoclastic move by a man who has made a career out of upsetting apple carts (and TV executives).

When Jeremy Clarkson announced last month that he and his fellow ex-Top Gear presenters, Richard Hammond and James May, had agreed to front a new motoring show for internet company Amazon, many fans were taken by surprise. The trio, after all, were television’s hottest free agents at the time, having left the BBC abruptly following a widely reported punch-up in a hotel, and commentators were confidently predicting the team would be signed up by ITV, Sky or another of the BBC’s traditional rivals.

But, in fact, we shouldn’t have been surprised at all; Amazon has been plotting to take over the world of television for years and the Top Gear coup is just the start of an accelerated investment in programme making and feature film production by a company that not that many years ago was most famous for selling books online.

But why is Amazon muscling its way into film and television? And what will it mean for viewers? The answer to the first question is simple: it is doing it because it can. Over the last five years a technological revolution has seen more and more people watching their favourite films and television shows over the internet. Instead of waiting for a time in the week when a broadcaster deigned to show the next episode in a particular series, viewers now have the opportunity to watch programmes or movies at a time and a place of their choosing, whether that be in their living room between nine and 10 o’clock on a Tuesday evening or under a tree in their local park on a Sunday afternoon.

The on-demand streaming service Netflix has attracted more than four million subscribers in the UK with a slate of dramas, sitcoms, documentaries, children’s programmes and films.

But, if anything, Amazon is in an even stronger position than Netflix. The sixth most popular website in the world, Amazon has tens of millions of internet-connected customers, most of whom have, over the years, happily embraced an ever-expanding suite of Amazon products. The US company was also in the film-rental business way before Netflix, having built up a back catalogue of tens of thousands of films and TV shows, which it sent to customers via post.

Amazon Fire TV Comparison

Realising that the era of the DVD was almost at an end, and the attraction of watching content immediately, at the click of a button, was growing, Amazon set about buying the rights to stream content, and, in 2008, launched Amazon Video on Demand. The offering was limited.

But, then, in 2011, the service was rebranded as Amazon Instant Video and added access to 5,000 movies and TV shows. Anyone who belonged to Amazon Prime, the company’s £79-a-year subscription service, could now watch thousands of TV programmes and films for free. But the first real coup for the streaming service came in 2014, when it successfully revived the Victorian crime drama Ripper Street, which had been cancelled by the BBC in December 2013.

“Forty thousand people signed a petition to keep it alive,” notes Chris Bird, Amazon’s UK director of content strategy, who also secured zeitgeisty US shows such as Outlander for British audiences. “When there’s that level of interest, you need to take note of it.”

Since then, Amazon Instant Video has gone from strength to strength. As well as securing the rights to stream more and more content, it has, like Netflix, started hiring top talent and making its own high-quality programmes, the most successful of which has been the comedy-drama Transparent, which won two Golden Globes earlier this year.

Woody AllenWoody Allen recently announced he would be working with Amazon on his first TV show, and the company, under its production arm, Amazon Studios, is also producing a new comedy by Steven Soderbergh, a film by Spike Lee and an adaptation of the Philip K Dick novel The Man in the High Castle, exec-produced by Ridley Scott.

(Netflix has also gone into the film business; it is preparing to release a sequel to the Ang Lee hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and an adaptation of the 2005 novel Beasts of No Nation, starring Idris Elba, which will be available to watch on Netflix the same day it is released in cinemas.)

On a scorching June day in San Pedro, Los Angeles, I watch the penultimate day of filming on the set of one of Amazon’s latest projects, Hand of God. The company’s second home-grown drama, Hand of God is set in the fictional city of San Vicente and centres around the influential, corrupt, and unstable judge Pernell Harris (Ron Perlman).

Less obviously starry than, say, a House of Cards or a True Detective, it nevertheless tackles age-old moral dilemmas and emotions (in this case, relating to grief and belief) with the same unflinching and grown-up approach as the best of Netflix or HBO.

Yet series creator Ben Watkins chose to work with Amazon, claiming other suitors were “scared” by the darkness and religious aspects of his concept. Both he and Jill Soloway, the creator of Transparent, maintain that Amazon’s quick decision-making and collaborative instincts are unique in television. While such comments carry an element of, “They would say that, wouldn’t they?”, they maintain that similar series for conventional broadcasters would have taken years to make.

“I go to work every day and I’m making the exact thing I want to make,” says Soloway. “I feel like I’m making art.” (The veteran producer of Top Gear, Andy Wilman, who is working with Clarkson et al on the new, as-yet-unnamed, motoring show has said that one of the reasons the team chose Amazon was because, “they leave you alone to make your show.”) Amazon’s reputation for artistic freedom was also a major draw for director Marc Forster, making his television debut on Hand of God after 20 years in cinema.

“After [Brad Pitt zombie epic] World War Z,” he says, “I realised that audiences want to know all about the hero’s journey in these big movies, and at the end they want to be satisfied. With TV, it’s completely the opposite: the looser it is, the better.” And Amazon, he adds, embraced the looseness.

Netflix has also won awards for its own programmes (both Orange Is the New Black and House of Cards have won Emmys ). But, thanks to a subversive pilot process, Amazon, the billion-dollar internet behemoth, is said to embody the spirit of “indie” cinema. Amazon invites pitches from anyone at all, whether they be scripts, short films or full-length pilots, reportedly sifting through many thousands of entries before commissioning a few for public assessment. First episodes of potential series are made available to everyone, free to view, and audience reviews then help determine whether a series is commissioned, giving viewers a sense of ownership.

The truth is, though, that both Amazon and Netflix also have masses of data about their customers. It has been reported that Netflix commissions programmes according to information about the demographics of its viewers, the most popular genres and actors, and the average length of time people watch for (among many other metrics). That means, according to one commentator, Netflix can be expected to commission a slew of “half-hour sitcoms starring millennial viewers’ childhood crushes.”

jeffrey tambor transparent

With all the data it’s collected over the years from its customers and their online purchases, as well as everything it observes about their viewing habits on its streaming service, it seems likely Amazon will do something similar.

But, some say, what is wrong with that? Surely it is better to make programmes based on a deep analysis of viewers’ preferences than to leave the commissioning up to a coterie of highly paid television or film studio executives in their ivory towers?

“I think we’re in a golden age of television,” Amazon founder Jeff Bezos told the Telegraph in a recent interview . Whether or not he colonises this medium as he has so much else, it is already fantastic news for anyone who makes or loves television.

Here's what happened when Jon Stewart got into the ring with John Cena during Sunday night's WWE SummerSlam

Jon Stewart returned to television Sunday night for the first time since his emotional end as host of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" by taking on the hosting duties at WWE's SummerSlam.

And it was quite a performance.

Here are Stewart's highlights from the evening:

"What's up, Brooklyn?" Stewart shouted to the SummerSlam crowd at the Barclays Center in New York to kick off the evening.

Sporting a gray beard, the comic told the crowd that he was still upset that Brock Lesnar broke The Undertaker's WrestleMania win streak at last year's WrestleMania 30 and that he planned to interview Lesnar during the evening. But he felt he needed some backup, so he brought out WWE legend Mick Foley to help him score the interview.

Foley misunderstood, however, and thought Stewart wanted his help interviewing The Rock, as in former WWE star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, not "Brock." Sadly, Foley couldn't help Stewart.

Stewart did get to Lesnar's dressing-room door, but was stopped by the wrestler's manager, Paul Heyman. Though Stewart tried to sweet-talk his way in, Heyman gave Stewart a bizarre Lesnar-focused chant and burned Stewart by saying, "I guess we couldn't get David Letterman to host."

But that wasn't the last we'd see of Stewart.

In the "Title For Title" match between United States champion John Cena and WWE world heavyweight champion Seth Rollins, who has had a feud with Stewart since the two clashed at a Monday Night RAW earlier this year, Stewart came running into the ring with a folding chair at a crucial moment of the match.

'Full House' stars say Lifetime's unauthorized movie about them is 'just so bad'

lifetime full house movie cast 1

Several of the stars of the original "Full House" decided to watch and give their opinions on Liftime's behind-the-scenes movie.

Saturday's "Unauthorized Full House Movie" dramatized the stars' lives on and off the set of the '90s hit, revealing lots of juicy nuggets, for example, that John Stamos wanted Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen fired. Of course, we know now that they ended up being the most successful cast members of the show.

To the surprise of some viewers, the movie also showed that Candace Cameron Bure's first audition wasn't so good, the Olsen twins' mom tried to pull them from the show as the ratings began to rise, and the guys did whippets together!

What did the show's real stars think of the portrayal?

Cameron Bure had just a few words:

Apparently, the movie skipped Cameron Bure's TV boyfriend Scott Weinger's mind.

Andrea Barber, who plays the girls' best friend, Kimmy Gibler, joked about the movie first:

And then she had a physical reaction to it.

John Stamos was very nice to the actor who played him. But isn't it bad luck to say "good luck" in showbiz?

Producer Jeff Franklin, who created "Full House," thought the movie was "not so good." But, more important, he had some fact-checking to do.

The original cast is banking on its ability to reignite the show's original magic with a spin-off, "Fuller House," for Netflix that is in production now.

Kelly Osbourne hasn't totally closed the door on E!'s "Fashion Police." It's more like she closed the door on someone who's on "Fashion Police."

When TheWrap asked if she would ever consider returning to the series, the rock star daughter offered, “If certain people weren’t there.”

new fashion police hosts E.JPGWhat could she mean? Does she have something against returning co-host Brad Goreski?

“Brad is one of the most incredible people in fashion, he is funny as f---,” Osbourne said backstage during the 4th Annual NYX FACE Awards in L.A.

Could Joan Rivers' daughter have rubbed Osbourne the wrong way?

“I am so happy for Melissa [Rivers] that she is filling that seat," Osbourne said of Rivers' return to the show after she decided to leave the runway style show and "try new things."

That leaves Giulana Rancic, who returns to the show after a major on-air incident over supposed "racist" comments made about Zendaya's dreadlocks during the Oscars.

Through process of elimination, it seems like Osbourne is angry with Rancic.

“I will never admit to liking Giuliana, because I don’t. I don’t think she’s a good person and I think she’s a liar,” Osbourne told the site.

Giuliana Rancic Kelly OsbourneWell, it doesn't look like Osbourne will be back on that panel anytime soon. She should really forvive and forget. After all, she was considered racist very recently when she made a misguided comment in response to Donald Trump's Mexican immigration statements.

'Fear the Walking Dead' may have shown It's still too early to cut the cord from cable

fear the walking dead

Some Sling TV subscribers ran into trouble on Sunday night when trying to watch the premiere of "Fear the Walking Dead" on AMC, according to the TV news site TVpredictions.com.

As Phillip Swann, the president and publisher of TVpredictions.com reported, Sling's customer service Twitter account responded to over 100 complaints of people having issues watching the show.

Sling TV is a streaming TV service that launched this year and lets you watch select channels live over the internet. It starts at $20 per month.

It has a history of outages when popular shows air. The "Fear the Walking Dead" premiere illustrates how tough it is to get live streaming TV right. It may be possible, but it's still not as reliable as good old-fashioned cable. At least not yet. For those who want to reliably watch major TV events like this, it might be too early to cut the cord from cable.

Sling TV's Twitter account continued to respond to complaints on Monday morning.

Some people posted pictures and video of black screens they saw when they tried to load AMC on Sling.

A half hour before the show premiered, Sling TV sent a tweet promoting the show, but the account was inundated with replies about the service not working.

sling tv twitter account

The issue with the "Fear the Walking Dead" premiere isn't the first high profile outage for Sling TV, which began streaming live TV to consumers in February.

The service went down during the Duke-Michigan State NCAA men's basketball semifinal game in April, prompting a blog post from Sling CEO Roger Lynch apologizing to subscribers and writing that the company is "working everyday to continue delivering that great experience."

Sling is one of a number of new services meant to appeal to the increasing number of people who are ditching their cable and satellite subscriptions for less expensive online services. HBO and Showtime recently launched standalone streaming services, and Sony has a live TV streaming service available to PlayStation 3 and 4 owners.

Apple is rumored to be working on a service of its own that it will launch early next year.

As Sling is learning, delivering live video online to a large number of people at the same time is very challenging, and for now it's considerably less reliable than traditional TV.

"Streaming TV is like television in 1951,"Swann told Tech Insider earlier this summer.  "It's exciting. It's eye-opening. It makes you wonder what's next. But it's also very frustrating."

Meanwhile, Apple is said to be testing a service similar to Sling TV that could launch in 2016. But Apple has been investing heavily in a content delivery network (CDN) to reliable push media like apps and video to customers. That could help when its TV service launches.

A representative from Sling said the company would have a statement to Tech Insider shortly.

That means the super sized 90-minute debut episode is the highest-rated show debut in cable history, according to Nielsen estimates. It beats AMC's "Better Call Saul," the "Breaking Bad" spin off, which was watched by 4.4 million viewers in the 18 to 49 demo.

John Cena gives Jon Stewart an 'attitude adjustment' on WWE Monday Night RAW

Cena Stewart 5

The Barclays Center in Brooklyn was in shock Sunday night when former “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart came into the ring during the bout at WWE SummerSlam between World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins and United States Champion John Cena and hit Cena with a folding chair, leading to Rollins winning the match and both titles.

SummerSlam 2015 1Stewart, who was the host of SummerSlam, returned to the squared circle on Monday Night RAW the following night to explain himself.

“Apparently I upset some people,” Stewart said to the crowd. Going on to say, “But to those individuals last night who had to comfort their children, children who wanted to know who the little old mean man was and why he would do that I will tell you why.”

Cena Stewart 2Stewart said that he wasn’t helping Seth Rollins win the match but that he couldn’t let John Cena tie wresting hall of famer Ric Flair’s record of being 16-time World Champion.

If Cena won the match against Rollins at SummerSlam he would have reached that mark.

“Because in my mind the champ is Flair,” said Stewart. “Not on my watch. Wasn’t going to happen.”

Following that statement Flair’s trademark “Whooo” chant burst through the speakers and the legendary wrestler came to the ring to the enjoyment of Stewart. The comic was so excited he did a little of Flair’s patented strut.

Stewart Cena 2But when Flair got to the mic, though he was appreciative of Stewart’s actions, he let the comic know that he was rooting for Cena.

“Sooner or later the record will be broken, and I would prefer it would be by someone that I respect,” Flair told Stewart.

Cena Stewart 3Then Cena entered the ring and gave Stewart a tongue-lashing.

Cena Stewart 4Stewart apologized to Cena for his actions and tried to convince Cena that it was an “opportunity” now to win back the belt.

“This is your moment,” Stewart told Cena.

Cena countered by say, “I understand that, so I know you’re going to understand this because right now I’m just going to do what I got to do.”

He then grabbed Stewart and put him across his shoulders and slammed him to the canvas. Known to WWE fans as Cena's “Attitude Adjustment” move.

These are today's best TV deals from around the web

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships so we may get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

Amazon's slashed the prices of a few dozen 4K and HDTVs this week, so for today's deal roundup we've honed in on the best bargains we could find among the savings. Not all of the cuts are all-time lows (or even all that new), but they're all generally solid values.

1. TCL S3800 Roku Smart LED TV

TCL Roku TVA popular choice among budget TV buyers, TCL's Roku TV bakes Roku's excellent smart TV interface right into the set, making it so you don't need to pair a set-top box alongside it. Its picture quality isn't quite as vivid as similarly-priced rivals from Vizio, but it's perfectly fine for how affordable it is. This is the lowest price we've seen for the panel, though only by a few dollars.

TCL 40FS3800 40-inch 1080p Roku Smart LED TV (2015 model), $329 (originally $419.99), available at Amazon. [22% off]

2. Samsung J5200 Smart LED TV

Samsung J5200 TVSamsung's TV selection often tends to run pricey, but the J5200 is one of its cheaper series. There isn't a ton of feedback for this particular model around the web, but if it's anything like its other budget panels then it should have more than serviceable picture quality. It's relatively light, too. Its priced has risen and dipped around this point over the last few months, but this is close to the lowest it's been on Amazon.

Samsung UN40J5200 40-inch 1080p Smart LED TV (2015 model), $379.99 (originally $529.99), available at Amazon. [25% off]

3. LG LF5600 LED TV

LG LF5600 TVLG's LF5600 series isn't as smart or vivid as the options above, but it does well enough, it has a wide viewing angle, and it's highly affordable.  It might be a steal for the right budget-minded audience, as it holds stellar user reviews on Amazon at the moment. Again, this isn't the lowest price we've seen for it, but it's only a few dollars off.

LG 32LF5600 32-inch 1080p LED TV (2015 model), $267.99 (originally $379.99), available at Amazon. [29% off]

4. Sharp LE653U Smart LED TV

Sharp LE653U TVSharp's latest set of 1080p panels have great contrast, with very deep blacks, three HDMI ports, and a good chunk of screen size for the money. This is the Wirecutter's current pick for the best $500 TV, and TV reviewing site Rtings calls it a "really great budget 1080p TV" for general movie and TV viewing (but not gaming). This is the lowest price we've seen for it on Amazon.

Sharp LC-48LE653U 48-inch 1080p 60Hz Smart LED TV (2015 model), $429.99 (originally $599.99), available at Amazon. [28% off]

5. Sharp UB30U 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV

Sharp UB30U TVOne step up from the LE653U above is Sharp's mid-range 4KTV line. It too has great contrast, alongside minimal motion blur, good brightness levels, and, naturally, a sharp 4K resolution. Again, just be wary for gaming, as Rtings says that it has notable input delay. This is the lowest it's been on Amazon.

Sharp LC-50UB30U 50-inch 4K Ultra HD 60Hz Smart LED TV (2015 model), $679.99 (originally $949.99), available at Amazon. [28% off]

6. Sony W800C 3D Smart LED TV

Sony W800C TVSony's budget offering isn't exactly cheap, but that money gets you one of the most well-rounded pictures you're going to find in this price range. Although it could stand to be brighter, it has little blur, deep blacks, and thin bezels. This is, again, the lowest we've seen it on Amazon.

Sony KDL50W800C 50-inch 1080p 120Hz 3D Smart LED TV (2015 model), $698.00 (originally $999.99), available at Amazon. [30% off]

7. Samsung JU6500 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV

Samsung JU6500 TVSamsung's cheaper 4K sets have hovered around its current prices for some time, but we highlight them here because they're just solid TVs. They look pricier than they actually are, and outside of some judder issues, mostly have the picture quality to match.

Samsung UN50JU6500 50-inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV (2015 model), $897.99 (originally $1,099.99), available at Amazon. [18% off]

8. Samsung JS8500 4K Ultra HD 3D Smart LED TV

Samsung JS8500If money is no object and you want a major step up in Samsung's line, take a look at the Korean firm's JS8500 series of 4KTVs. This is the flat version of Samsung's highest-end curved panels, and they do just about everything spectacularly. There's a little bit of input delay, but besides that its contrast, colors, viewing angles, and smart TV performance are all great. It's been at this very high price for a little while now, but it's fantastic.

Samsung UN55JS8500 55-inch 4K Ultra HD 3D Smart LED TV (2015 model), $1,997.99 (originally $2,999.99), available at Amazon[33% off]

An Ashley Madison TV show could become a reality

Ashley Madison

Suddenly, the name Ashley Madison is everywhere. While that’s not great news for Josh Duggar or the 30 million other users who had their personal information compromised in a wide-ranging hack that revealed users (including government officials and politicians) who had active accounts on the infidelity website, it is good news for the team currently pitching a TV project to networks based on the controversial site.

OutEast Entertainment partners Steven Marrs and Courtney Hazlett are producing the project — tentatively titled "Thank You Ashley Madison" and written by Jennifer Kennedy ("Justified") and Ian MacDonald — for Toronto-based Marblemedia. Hazlett tells THR that while Ashley Madison was founded by Noel Biderman in 2001, having the story centered on a man seemed "stereotypical." Instead, they opted to fictionalize it and focus it on a good mother who launches the business to help support her family.

josh duggar ashley madison 2"There are a lot of TV shows doing a great job of presenting marriage story lines in new ways, but what we’re positing here is, what if there is a third lane to run in and what if you were honest about it?" Hazlett asks, adding that the hack will likely be explored in some form. "What if you didn’t need a hack to have this conversation? Maybe this is where your life just is, and no shows on television are offering that."

Adds Marblemedia’s co-CEO Matt Hornburg: "We are in the early stages of developing a scripted series inspired by the site which, given the events from the past week, make the themes explored more timely."

And while Duggar and fellow cheaters are likely hoping the name Ashley Madison disappears from the front page sooner rather than later, Hazlett says: "Anytime 30 million people are doing anything, it becomes worthy of a real discussion."

USA pushing 'Mr. Robot' finale because a scene is similar to this morning's journalist shooting

USA Network is pushing Wednesday's finale airing of "Mr. Robot," because of a scene that is similar to the tragic shooting deaths in Virginia.

A network representative issued the following statement to Business Insider:

"The previously filmed season finale of Mr. Robot contains a graphic scene similar in nature to today’s tragic events in Virginia. Out of respect to the victims, their families and colleagues, and our viewers, we are postponing tonight’s episode. Our thoughts go out to all those affected during this difficult time."

The season finale will air in its entirety next Wednesday, September 2 at 10 p.m. An encore of the penultimate episode of "Mr. Robot" will air Wednesday at 10 p.m. instead of the finale episode.

It's unclear how closely the scene is reminiscent of Wednesday morning's events, in which a gunman killed a reporter and her cameraman while airing a live interview.

WDBJ7, based in Roanoke, Virginia, said reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27, died in the attack.

The suspect in the shooting, Vester Lee Flanagan, who went by the name Bryce Williams on air, previously worked as a reporter at WDBJ-TV. Flanagan was fired and still held deep anger over the incident.

Flanagan, 41, shot himself as the police confronted him on the highway, according to police, and the Washington Post confirmed that he died at a hospital at 1:26 p.m.

On "Mr. Robot," Christian Slater's mysterious hacker character, "Mr. Robot," hopes to free Americans from the oppression of debt.

Apple TV might finally get all of the best apps it's been missing

$

apple tv

One of the biggest downsides of Apple TV is its lack of apps, or as Apple calls them, "channels."

Sure, Apple TV has many of the big ones — Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, iTunes, HBO Now, and HBO Go — but it's missing important apps like Amazon Instant Video, Pandora, Sling TV, and Spotify.

And it also doesn't have most of the niche channels found on Roku's devices, which include apps focused on special interest content like yoga, spirituality, fitness, documentaries, and indie movies.

But Apple TV's channel problem may soon come to an end.

That's because Apple is expected to announce a new Apple TV at its annual iPhone event in September. And as BuzzFeed's John Paczkowski reported last month, the new Apple TV will have an app store that will allow third-party developers to make apps for it.

If the rumors turn out to be true, we could see an app store similar to the one for the iPhone and iPad. This means that many different types of companies, especially streaming media companies, could finally get their content on Apple TV.

And it also increases the chances that you may have some alternatives to iTunes to buy and rent movies.

Currently with Apple TV, you can only buy or rent movies through iTunes. So if you have a collection of movies you've downloaded from Amazon or another service, you can't easily watch them on your Apple TV. You can use the AirPlay feature on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad to beam some of this content to your Apple TV, but it's still not as ideal as having the app natively on the box.

But if the Apple TV app store is opened up to developers, you may see apps from companies that sell content, like Amazon, M-Go, and Vudu. It's also not out of the realm of possibility that we'd even see apps like Google Play Movies & TV and Google Play Music, which are basically Google's version of iTunes.

Allowing different apps on the device is great for consumers because it's a way for them to make sure that they can hold on to media they buy even if they change devices.

It would also help Apple catch up to Roku, the company that makes the best streaming box. Roku has more than 2,000 channels while Apple has about 65. Today, new apps only come to Apple TV after Apple approves them and you have very little control over what you see.

An app store won't be the only changes reportedly coming to the Apple TV, which hasn't gotten a significant update in five years. Paczkowski also reports that the device will work with Siri, come with a touchpad remote, and have a faster processor.

Some of America's best TV shows have a problem with women

its always sunny in philadelphia cast

The Director's Guild of America released its TV diversity statistics this week, and they're not looking too good.

Of more than 3,900 episodes produced in the 2014-2015 television season, only 16% of directors were women, and only 18% were of minority ethnicities.

The numbers become even more troubling when you look at the diversity statistics for first-time directors, which predict diversity over time. The percentage of female first-time directors dropped to 16% from 20%, and the percentage of minority first-time directors rose by just 1 percentage point, also to 16%.

First-time directors diversityA full 10% of all series examined had no women or minority directors whatsoever. The highest profile are "Boardwalk Empire,""Masters of Sex," and "Ray Donovan.""It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" hasn't hired any female or minority directors during its 115-episode run that began a decade ago.

In its 197 episodes since 2005, "Supernatural" hired two women and three minority men to direct. The DGA did commend several shows for their commitment to hiring minority directors — the most prominent of which include "Veep,""Empire,""Homeland," and "Modern Family."

Six series from subscription-video services, like Netflix and Amazon, earned spots on the DGA's "worst of" list, for television shows that hire people who aren't non-Caucasian males as directors for fewer than 15% of their episodes. This indicates "that new platforms may be carrying through the same hiring practices as traditional television and cable networks," according to the report, even though shows like Amazon's "Transparent" and Netflix's "Sense8" are receiving criticalacclaim for their diversity.

Only 3% of all episodes were directed by minority women. Caucasian males retained the same slice of the pie as last year, directing 69% of all episodes.

DGA diversity pie chartOn a lighter note, an interesting tidbit from the DGA report is buried in a footnote. The percentage drop for minority males — to 15% from 17% — can be credited to Tyler Perry.

"It should be noted that there was a 3% increase in the hiring of minority males in the 2013-14 season that was entirely attributed to the high number of episodes directed by a single director: Tyler Perry," the report says. "Perry directed 54 fewer episodes in the 2014-15 season, contributing to a 2% reduction in the number of episodes directed by male minorities."
