Trevor Noah is trying to wrap his head around Donald Trump's public statements and a new report that he has potentially not paid federal taxes for nearly two decades.

The New York Times was anonymously sent Trump's 1995 tax records and asked tax experts to evaluate them. What it found was that he reported business losses of about $916 million, which would've provided him a way to skip paying taxes for 18 years.

“The only way this could look worse is if we found out he also claimed a small hands deduction,” Noah joked on Monday's episode of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show."

While taking advantage of tax laws in such a way isn't illegal, it brings up lots of questions about how Trump has done business, his actual record of giving back to society, and his own comments about how unfair it is that the rich aren't paying their fair share to society.

In one clip from a Republican debate from last September, Trump is shown saying, "I know people who are making a tremendous amount of money and paying virtually no tax, and I think it’s unfair."

Noah then impersonated Trump, saying, "I know these people. I know these people so well, folks, because them is me."

That led the host to suggest that maybe Trump's grand scheme is to show voters all that's wrong with America by pretending to be those things himself.

“All this time we thought Trump was a bad person, but really he’s a hero,” Noah reasoned. "Trump is forcing us to examine all the things wrong with America by selflessly embodying its worst traits."

Noah took a moment, then said, "It's that or he's a petty, attention-seeking con man, whose temper, ignorance, and narcissism will destroy us all. But either way, in 39 days, we'll find out."
