There's nothing like kicking back after a long week and binge watching your favorite TV show or movie. But wouldn't it be better if you could experience it in surround sound? Or on a huge projected screen?
Home theaters have a rap for being expensive and time consuming to build, but I've created two different setups that each cost under $1,000. Whether you've got a small space but still want a 5.1 4K setup, or you're looking to turn your basement into a movie theater, this list has you covered.

Setup 1: A 4K TV
4K content may not be standard yet, but a TV should last you a long time. My first HDTV was a Christmas present in 2006, and it's still getting used every day. A lot has happened in TV technology since then, and this newly-released Vizio set packs all of the latest and greatest features.
Instead of a standard remote, this TV has a tablet full of apps whose content you can beam to the TV through Google's Chromecast software. It has 4HDMI ports and a set of component ports for all of your connectivity needs, and optical and analog audio outs, if you'd like to hook up a set of speakers.
A TV is the cornerstone of a home theater system. I'm recommending this set because I've been using a Vizio 4K TV for months now and couldn't be more satisfied. The picture is pristine, and it has enough inputs for all of my game consoles, PC, and a set-top box.

Setup 1: A sound bar audio setup
If you're strapped for space, but still want better sound than your TV's stereo speakers, your best option is to get a soundbar sound system. Again, Vizio has you covered. The company just revamped its entire line of sound bars. The biggest update is built-in Chromecast support. So even if your TV is off, you'll be able to stream audio from Chromecast-supported apps, like Spotify or YouTube, from your smartphone or tablet. Otherwise you'll be able to connect the soundbar to your TV through HDMI or an optical cable, and have a 5.1 sound system with a small footprint.

Setup 2: A projector
One of the best decisions my college friends and I ever made was to chip in to buy a projector. Having a projector literally turns your living room, basement, etc. into a home theater.
This refurbished model by Epson, yes, I said refurbished, is capable of creating a 300-inch 720p screen. The picture won't be as sharp as a 4K set, but a 720p video stream still looks top-notch. A consideration you'll have to make before deciding to buy a projector is that any light that seeps into your home theater will interfere with the picture. So if you're going to buy a projector, I also suggest investing in some light-deadening curtains. You'll also lose out on having a lot of inputs, this projector only has one HDMI port on it, but the next slide will explain why that's just fine.
