Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Game of Thrones" season six, including speculation.
The "Game of Thrones" season six premiere was packed with moments both bigand small, emotionaland shocking. But, as many season openers do, the episode felt more like a general prologue of events to come.
Based on some of the un-adapted book material left, we can make a guess for where the show is going to head. In one case, fans are speculating that Daenerys Tagaryen is being set up to encounter yet another Westerosi this season.
Last chance to turn back if you don't want to know about potential future events based on the books.
In Sunday's episode, Varys and Tyrion stumble upon another attack from the Sons of the Harpy — Daenerys' entire fleet of ships in Meereen had been burned. "Well, we won't be going to Westeros anytime soon," Tyrion said.
OR WILL THEY?!
This attack on Meereen's naval fleet seems like the perfect set up for the introduction of the Ironborn in Meereen.
Confused? Let's back up.
The Iron Islands are home to the entire Greyjoy family and the rest of the Ironborn people. The last time we saw Theon's father, Balon Greyjoy, in season three he had named himself King of the Iron Islands.
We haven't seen Balon, or his daughter Yara, for a couple seasons now. But we know they're appearing in season six. The season six episode two description includes a line about "Balon Greyjoy entertaining other proposals" and Yara was spotted in the trailer.
Yara is looking pretty upset, and it's probably because her father is dead. In the book series, Balon dies during a storm while on a rickety bridge. Though no one can prove it, some Ironborn believe Balon was actually murdered by his brother, Euron.
We know Euron was cast for season six, and have also spotted a shot of him in the trailer. He's standing on a bridge in the rain, so we can assume the show is depicting him clearly as Balon's murderer.
This could all tie back to Daenerys and Meereen in a similar way to the books. Euron takes command of the Ironborn, and orders his other brother Victarion to go to Meereen on his behalf. Euron knows about Daenerys and her dragons, and intends on marrying her.
We have no word of Victarion being cast in the show, but it's possible either Euron or Yara go on this mission instead. They could sail to Meereen with the intention of wooing Daenerys, and if her entire fleet of ships has been destroyed, the Dragon Queen might be more open to accepting their help. And once she has ships again, maybe she can finally turn her back on Meereen. At least, we hope so.
So if you thought this was just another happenstance Sons of the Harpy attack, think again. We believe the showrunners have clear plans in mind for this season. And they involve the Ironborn.
