Jon Stewart defends Samantha Bee after Trump suggested she should get fired for calling Ivanka a 'c---'

  • Jon Stewart defended Samantha Bee in a Q&A on Sunday after President Trump called for her firing last week over Bee's remarks on Ivanka Trump.
  • Bee drew criticism from the Trump administration and subsequently apologized after she called Ivanka a "feckless c---" on her TBS show, "Full Frontal."
  • Stewart said that the controversy that surrounded Bee represents a "game" and "strategy" from right-wing politicians at large.

Samantha Bee faced intense criticism from President Trump last week after she called Ivanka Trump a "feckless c---' on her TBS show, "Full Frontal."

Trump quickly took to Twitter to ask why TBS wouldn't fire Bee for "horrible language." But in the eyes of Jon Stewart, who worked with Bee on "The Daily Show" from 2003 to 2015, the controversy that surrounded Bee from the White House last week represents a "game" and "strategy" from right-wing politicians at large.

"Please understand that a lot of what the right does, and it’s maybe their greatest genius, is they’ve created a code of conduct that they police, that they themselves don’t have to, in any way, abide," Stewart said in a Q&A at Clusterfest comedy festival on Sunday, as reported by The Daily Beast.

"It’s a game, it’s a strategy, and it’s working," Stewart added.

Bee apologized for her remarks last week after Trump called for her firing. Bee used the phrase in question during a segment urging the president's daughter to "do something" about her father's immigration policy that's resulted in undocumented immigrant children being removed from their parents.

Stewart commented on Bee's controversy and apology on Sunday by first addressing "liberals" at large.

"Don’t get caught in a trap of thinking you can live up to a code of integrity that will be enough for the propagandist right. There isn’t," he said. "And so, create your own moral code to live by, but don’t be fooled into trying to make concessions that you think will mollify them."

Stewart then turned to Bee's comments in particular.

"They don’t give a shit about the word 'c---,'" Stewart said of the Trump administration. "That is probably—[Trump] says that instead of 'please,' I'm guessing."

As the Daily Beast notes, various reports since the 1980s have alleged that Trump has used the derogatory word to describe women.

A teary-eyed Sara Gilbert gets emotional about the cancellation of 'Roseanne': 'It's sad to see it end this way'

  • "Roseanne" star Sara Gilbert spoke about ABC's decision to cancel the show on "The Talk."
  • Through tears, the actress and show's executive producer said it's been a difficult week, but that she is proud of the revival the cast and crew made.
  • "I'm sad for the people who lost their jobs in the process," said Gilbert.
  • Gilbert emphasized she stands by the network's decision to cancel the series.
  • A spin-off centered around Gilbert's character is reportedly in the works.

"Roseanne" star Sara Gilbert stands by ABC's decision to cancel the "Roseanne" revival.

"The Talk" co-host took a moment on Monday's show to address the cancellation of the show after Roseanne Barr compared President Barack Obama's former senior adviser Valerie Jarrett to an ape on Twitter.

"In addition to my statement, I would like to say this has been a very difficult week. A lot of people have been hurt by this," said a teary-eyed Gilbert. "I will say I'm proud of the show we made."

sara gilbert tears

"The show has always been about diversity, love, and inclusion," she continued. "It's sad to see it end in this way. I'm sad for the people who lost their jobs in the process; however, I do stand behind the decision that ABC made."

Hours after Barr's tweet about Jarrett, ABC made the decision to cancel "Roseanne."

"Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,"said ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey in a statement.

Gilbert served as an executive producer on the show, and was the impetus behind getting the revival off the ground at ABC. A parody sketch of the show featuring Gilbert and original "Roseanne" cast mate John Goodman helped spark the idea for the reboot in 2017.

The show's return became an instant success for the network with over 25 million viewers tuning in for its premiere at the end of March.

The 43-year-old actress previously addressed Barr's tweet with disappointment.

"Roseanne’s recent comments about Valerie Jarrett, and so much more, are abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show," Gilbert wrote in a tweet. "I am disappointed in her actions to say the least."

If you're bummed about the show's cancellation, Gilbert is reportedly in talks to revive the series again — without Roseanne. Though John Goodman has said he has heard nothing of a potential spin-off, according to TMZ, a rebranded "Roseanne" may center around Darlene.

You can watch Gilbert talk about the show below on "The Talk."

An essential timeline of every important event on 'Westworld'

Dolores and Arnold Westworld season one finale

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Westworld" season two, episode seven, "Les Ecorches."

HBO's "Westworld" takes place over the course of at least 37 or so years. While fans believe they've discovered the exact year in the future we're seeing (2052), HBO hasn't made this revelation official yet.

But even without an exact year, audiences are able to deduce the approximate placement of events based on context clues and exposition between Ford and other characters on the first season.

To help "Westworld" fans better understand the events that have led up to the current season, INSIDER has put together a chronological timeline.

The events are marked to indicate whether the scene was featured on season one or season two (either through expository dialogue or in a flashback/flash forward) as well as which episode the revelation appeared on.

Since this is not an official HBO-issued timeline, know that some events (or their placement) are subject to change based on new episodes.

We'll update this timeline and the approximate year guesses each week as the second season progresses.

This version of the timeline reflects events from season two, episode seven, "Les Écorchés."

Last week, we changed the last time frame to "11 days after Ford's death" thanks to a new revelation on the Delos Destinations Intranet website. If you go into the chat bot and select "Restore From Previous Backup B," the site says it's been 11 days since the "initial breach" by the time Karl Strand's Delos team arrives to the park.

A screenshot of the Delos Destinations Intranet page.

The seventh episode this season revealed that the mysterious Dolores and Bernard scenes took place far back in the past, when Ford was first building the host-version of Arnold.

Westworld Timeline as of June 1 2018

As we noted above, it's possible certain placements of events aren't in official order or not entirely correct in their description (since names like Bernard and Arnold might become interchangeable). But as more is revealed, we'll adapt and update the timeline.

12 of the best current TV shows you can catch up to on Netflix

better call saul

Still behind on the biggest and best TV shows?

Thankfully it's almost summer, which means you might have some free time or vacation days to squeeze in a lot of binge-watching of the currently running shows that you've missed.

For years, Netflix has been a prime source for this — so much so that some TV shows experience what is known as the "Netflix Effect."

Once a series is available on Netflix, it's easier for more people to catch up. This can spur a rise in popularity. Shows that saw their popularity soar once they became available on Netflix famously include AMC's "Breaking Bad" and The CW's "Riverdale" (which gained in popularity last summer when it became available on Netflix in between seasons one and two). This also happened when NBC's "The Good Place" came to the streaming service last fall, a few weeks before season two premiered.

Here, we collected some of the best running shows that are available on Netflix now, so you can play catch-up before they return.

From "The Good Place" to "Riverdale," here's some of the best shows on TV that you can watch on Netflix right now.

SEE ALSO: 3 great TV shows you should watch on Netflix this month

"The Good Place"— NBC, one season available on Netflix

Netflix description: Due to an error, self-absorbed Eleanor Shellstrop arrives at the Good Place after her death. Determined to stay, she tries to become a better person.

Critic score: 95%

Audience score: 87%

The heavenly, whip-smart comedy starring Kristen Bell and Ted Danson is unlike anything else on TV. The season one and two finales end with shocking twists that both set a completely new premise for the next season.

Expect season three of "The Good Place" in the fall. Season two should become available on Netflix shortly before that premieres.

"Riverdale"— The CW, two seasons available on Netflix

Netflix description: While navigating the troubled waters of sex, romance, school and family, teen Archie and his gang become entangled in a dark Riverdale mystery.

Critic score: 87%

Audience score: 77%

If you're into glossy, cheesy teen drama that doesn't require much brain power (where the teens are played by adults well into their 20s), The CW's "Riverdale" is perfect for a summer binge-watch. The characters are based on the Archie comics (Archie, Betty, Veronica, and many more) but they're in a modern setting, with lots of murder. Seriously. There is so much murder on this show, especially in its bloody second season.

Expect season three of "Riverdale" in the fall.

"Shameless"—Showtime, seven seasons available on Netflix

Netflix description: This dramedy based on a British series centers on siblings in a dysfunctional Chicago family who struggle while coping with their alcoholic father.

Critic score: 93%

Audience score: 88%

"Shameless" is an unconventional family drama and dark comedy that comes with incredible performances, and a lot of shocking twists and turns for its messy but lovable characters.

Season 8 should be available on Netflix soon, and you can expect season 9 to premiere in late 2018 or early 2019.

5 reality TV shows that need to be brought back

0

the simple life paris and nicole

When MTV decided to re-launch their groundbreaking reality series "Jersey Shore," critics were skeptical of the station's ability to re-create a classic. Besides, many of the legendary Garden State castmates had become parents since their stint on the program, meaning that the partying and tomfoolery that made the show a success would likely be turned way down.

But Snooki, The Situation, Pauly D., and the rest of the gang proved us all wrong by fist-bumping their way into adulthood — remaining as entertaining as ever.

This got us wondering: what other reality shows deserve a reboot? With nostalgia for the early 00's reaching a boiling point, we're ready to bring back some of the genre's classics. Check out our list of the shows that could use a revival, below.

"The Simple Life"

Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie toured America from 2003 to 2007, getting in touch with the country's roots and showing off their bizarrely impeccable comedic timing along the way. Running for five seasons, The Simple Life proved the two were millionaires with hearts of gold. With the last decade's huge political paradigm shifts, a rebooted version of the show could prove to be equal parts entertaining and informative as the heiresses encounter a new version of Real America. Now that's hot.

"The Surreal Life"

The reality show that launched a thousand spin-offs, it was "The Surreal Life" that created a series of budding celebrity romances and plenty of lascivious intrigue back when the program ran in the early 00's. Taking the format of MTV's "The Real World" but adding a star-studded twist, "The Surreal Life" re-created cultural icons out of celebs like Flavor Flav and Christopher Knight, who both later became the subjects of their own series. With an entirely new potential roster of glitterati to choose from, it's high-time things get surreal once again.

"The Bad Girls Club"

Garnering endless criticism, "Bad Girls Club" was a pre-Real Housewives guilty pleasure which pitted scores of girls with apparently undiagnosed personality disorders against each other in an unattended mansion. The ladies partied, fought, drank, partied some more, and fought some more for seventeen seasons — but amidst the drama and violence were some serious stories about survival and sisterhood. Although the show was officially cancelled in 2016, the diverse cast lives on in the endless reaction gifs proliferating on social media. In 2018, we’re already ready for a new network to pick this series back up.

16 TV shows that carried on after the main star left

0

darlene roseanne

ABC swiftly canceled "Roseanne" after its main star sent out a tweet comparing President Barack Obama's former advisor Valerie Jarrett to an ape

While Roseanne won't return to TV this fall, the network is reportedly considering ways to continue the show without its lead in a spin-off centered around the rest of the Conner family. It certainly wouldn't be the first time a hit show has carried on after its lead has been fired.

INSIDER rounded up shows that have tried to continue without its main actor. Some have continued on successfully for years while others floundered for a season or two before getting the ax. Let's face it: Sometimes, it's just not the same without a show's original star.

Many of the show changes involved the firing of lead actresses after they asked for pay raises equal to their male counterparts. This was long before actresses like Jessica Chastain and former E! News host Catt Sadler were speaking out about pay equity.

Others are because of spats on and off set and allegations of sexual misconduct. And still other times, stars just felt they had told the story they had set out to tell and felt the show was, perhaps, past its prime.

"8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter" tried to continue after the sudden death of its lead star.

John Ritter's unexpected death during the production of season two left the show up in the air. After going on a brief hiatus, the show returned for two more seasons, but it was never the same.

Though the show wrote the star's death into the show and had David Spade and James Garner join, "8 Simple Rules" couldn't recover without its lead. Ritter's death overshadowed the series with the show becoming a reminder week after week about the actor's untimely death. It was a downer.

The show was canceled after its third season as ratings continued to decline. Things turned out all right for the cast.

Cuoco went over to "The Big Bang Theory" and is one of the highest-paid stars on TV and Katey Sagal was a lead on FX's hit "Sons of Anarchy."

"Once Upon a Time" tried to reinvent itself after a lot of the main cast left.

After Emma Swan and Captain Hook tied the knot at the end of season six, six original cast members announced they were departing the show.

With so many beloved characters gone, the show attempted hitting the reset button by fast-forwarding a decade and following Swan's son, Henry. Unfortunately, the result felt too much like a rehash of the original show.

Showrunners Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis also attempted bringing back the Alice in Wonderland character — a personal favorite of Kitsis' — even after a spin-off with that character had already failed

ABC didn't seem too invested in the show any more either. The series was moved from its longstanding Sunday night slot to the Friday night death slot at 9 p.m. when its presumed younger audiences weren't tuning in. The show was canceled after bringing in lower ratings than its previous sixth season.

"The Office" continued on for two seasons too long after Steve Carell left.

Will Ferrell and James Spader both tried to keep the show afloat after Carell left the NBC comedy on its seventh season, However, Deangelo Vickers and Robert California couldn't really pack the same punch as Michael Scott.

Many agreed it just wasn't the same without Carell's charm and humor. Instead, it felt like the show dragged on as the show dipped in ratings.

Some returning favorites are starting new seasons including TV Land's "Younger" and Netflix's "Glow.""Nashville" will air is final episodes on CMT, and Katherine Heigl will attempt to make people forget Meghan Markle isn't on USA's "Suits" anymore, because she's pretty busy with other things now.

There are also a few new shows to look forward to this summer, including HBO's "Sharp Objects" starring Amy Adams, and Amazon's "Jack Ryan" series starring John Krasinski, who became an action star when we weren't paying attention.

Here are all of the notable shows premiering in summer 2018, and whether or not you should watch them:

A doctor spotted a woman's cancer when he saw her on an HGTV show — here's the incredible story

0

doctor saw womans cancer HGTV 4x3

  • Nicole McGuinness, 31, recently appeared on an episode of HGTV's "Beachfront Bargain Hunt Renovation."
  • New York-based doctor Erich Voigt was watching the episode when he noticed a concerning lump on McGuinness's neck.
  • He posted about the lump on Facebook, and writing that she needed to have a biopsy.
  • That post eventually reached McGuinness, who got the lump tested and found out she has thyroid cancer
  • Voigt and McGuinness met for the first time on "Good Morning America" on Tuesday.

Nicole McGuinness was just diagnosed with thyroid cancer, but she may not have caught it without the help of a complete stranger who saw her on TV.

That stranger was Dr. Erich Voigt, a head and neck surgeon based in New York who saw McGuinness on an HGTV show, noticed a lump on her neck, and posted about it on social media. His post made it all the way to McGuinness's personal network, prompting her to get a biopsy and, last week, a diagnosis.

On Tuesday, the two met face-to-face for the first time in an emotional segment on "Good Morning America."

The pair's unlikely connection began roughly a month ago, when Voigt happened to be watching HGTV's "Beachfront Bargain Hunt Renovation."

In the episode, McGuinness, 31, was searching for a property in North Carolina. That's when Voigt saw the lump on her neck.

"I felt obliged to help," Voigt, division chief of general/sleep otolaryngology at NYU Langone Health, said on "Good Morning America.""I saw something and I said, I have to reach out."

So he took to social media.

"I am watching a tv show and notice this woman has a left thyroid mass," he wrote in a Facebook post, accompanied by a cell phone video he took of the episode. "She needs a sonogram and fine needle biopsy. I wonder if she knows and hope it's benign."

The video was viewed 26,000 times and eventually found its way to a friend of McGuinness's mother, who relayed the message, according to "Good Morning America." McGuinness said she immediately saw her primary care doctor to get it checked out. On Friday, she received the results of her biopsy and learned that she has thyroid cancer.

As improbable as it sounds, this isn't the first time an HGTV viewer has spotted a health problem. In 2013, a registered nurse watching "Flip or Flop"noticed a lump on host Tarek El Moussa's throat. It turned out to be thyroid cancer.

This is also not McGuinness's first brush with cancer. In 2015, she was diagnosed with a stage 4 glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer. She finished treatment last summer and began filming that HGTV episode a few months later, according to "Good Morning America."

"I have gone through a lot these the past couple of years and never expected to have to be a two-time cancer survivor," McGuinness said during the segment. She went on to thank Voigt, saying, "without you keeping a vigilant eye and watching that television show, who knows how long I would have gone on without that being checked. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much."

nicole mcguinness thyroid cancer HGTV

In an interview with INSIDER, Voigt said hearing those words was a powerful experience.

"I was trying to fight tears because it was very emotional for me," he said. "Just to be part of helping someone."

Voigt added that he was encouraged to see social media — so often home to hate and harassment — function as a force for good.

"I have personally witnessed so much negativity with social media," he said. "Things that they wouldn't say face to face they say on social media, and I think it leads to a lot of negativity and a lot of misunderstanding. And I thought this story showed the positive use."

Finally, he stressed that he's not seeking accolades for his actions.

"I've had colleagues ... congratulating me. And my response is simply, 'This is what you do every day,'" he said. "This is what doctors and nurses do every day."

Learn more about the signs of thyroid cancer at the American Cancer Society website— and watch the entire segment from "Good Morning America" below:

McGuinness did not immediately respond to INSIDER's request for comment.

REVIEW: 'Marvel's Cloak and Dagger' is more gritty teen drama than superhero show and it's better for it

0
0

cloak and dagger

Warning: Minor spoilers ahead for the first season of "Cloak and Dagger."

Marvel's TV presence is growing with the addition of Freeform's "Cloak and Dagger."

The series stars Olivia Holt as Tandy Bowen, also known as Dagger, and Aubrey Joseph as Tyrone Johnson, aka Cloak.

Both Tandy and Tyrone are teenagers dealing with grief and trauma whose lives change when their superpowers manifest and unite them in ways they never expected. Dagger has the ability to create light daggers, and Cloak can travel through and transport people to a new dimension or use that dimension as a shortcut to transport on Earth.

Why you should care: It's the latest Marvel addition to TV.

olivia holt cloak and dagger

The latest TV venture for the comic giant, "Cloak and Dagger" fits in with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series is teen-driven and features Marvel characters that may be unfamiliar to some viewers. In the comics, they have worked with Spider-Man, the New Mutants, the Runaways, and more.

As of now, there are no immediate plans to feature a crossover between "Cloak and Dagger" and "The Runaways," which is streaming on Hulu. It is unclear how the show will mention other heroes or occurrences in the universe, but there will be ties between them. "Cloak and Dagger" takes place in New Orleans, which is a change from the original comics, and "The Runaways" takes place in Los Angeles, so they aren't immediately affected by each other or the events in New York.

Show creator Joe Pokaski is also connected to Marvel. He wrote two episodes of the first season of Netflix's "Daredevil." That gritty tone can easily be seen on "Cloak and Dagger" from the very first episode.

What's hot: It's more than just a superhero show.

aubrey joseph

Tandy and Tyrone do have special abilities, but their powers are not the main focus of the first season. Instead, the show explores their background, their lifestyles, and their connection more than anything else. Their powers are secondary to their struggles with grief, loss, and trauma.

The two are united by a shared tragic experience they have as kids on the same stormy evening. Tandy's father, a Roxxon Energy employee, is driving her home from ballet practice when he receives a call from the company. While on the call, an oil rig explodes causing her father to lose control of the car which plunges off a bridge into a lake. Tyrone witnesses his brother being shot by a cop, another unarmed black kid killed by police. The boy falls into the lake and Tyrone jumps in after him. As Tyrone and Tandy are stuck underwater, they are affected by a blast in the water. They wake up hand-in-hand on the beach. After separating, they don't come into contact again until they are older.

The story is dark, and twisted and gritty. It dives into poverty, police brutality, racism, religion, and suicide. The kids have very real issues and experiences.

What's not: It moves at a slow pace.

cloak and dagger

Though the two kids experience a shared connection, their life experiences differ greatly. The first season focuses on building that history and establishing relationships. But that makes for a slowly-paced couple of episodes. There are flashbacks setting the scene that jump into moments that seem slightly unnecessary.

It can be frustrating to wait for them to understand each other, but once they do, the show does start to pick up the pace.

The bottom line: If you like superheroes and teen dramas, this is the show for you.

cloak and dagger

"Cloak and Dagger" joins a saturated field of comic shows. There's the cheesiness and the action that's expected of comics, but it's focus on the teenage experience sets it apart from most of the others. Aside from the slow pace, the show builds upon each episode and becomes more exciting as the season progresses. It's worth diving into.

Grade: B

"Cloak and Dagger" premieres Thursday, June 7 at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform.

Anne Hathaway says Rihanna really loved her post-baby body

anne hathaway rihanna body compliment

  • Anne Hathaway appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Thursday and spoke about experience on the "Ocean's 8" set.
  • The actress said that she was hesitant to return to work due to her post-baby weight gain (she welcomed her first child in 2016).
  • Instead, she was met with kind words from her co-stars.
  • The compliment that made Hathaway giddy came from Rihanna, who said: 'Damn girl, you got an ass."

The ladies of "Ocean's 8" have repeatedly gushed about their real-life friendship, and star Anne Hathaway revealed that Rihanna in particular gave her a boost of confidence after giving birth.

Hathaway appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Thursday and explained the "love fest" that occurred on the set.

"Ocean's 8" was the first film that Hathaway participated in following the birth of son Jonathan in April 2016. The actress said that she felt self-conscious when she went to work and was "aware" that her body was a different size from what people were used to.

Hathaway said that when she saw co-stars Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, they complimented her jeans. But the comment that made Hathaway beam came from Rihanna.

"Rihanna looks up and goes, 'Damn girl, you got an ass,'" Hathaway recalled. "And I of course freaked out and loved it so much."

According to Hathaway, Rihanna added: "You got an ass like me."

"I can honestly say I've never had that experience on a film set before," Hathaway said.

Aside from having support from her co-stars, Hathaway said that Gary Ross, the "Ocean's 8" director, responded positively to her post-baby size.

"The weight was really slow to come off, and the director told me, 'That's great. We have eight women in this movie, we need to have as many body types up there as we can,' which I was really relieved to hear," Hathaway said.

She also said that as a seasoned actress, she has learned to embrace and accept her appearance.

"One of the lucky things about being in this business for so long is that I've really come to terms with the pressure that you get to look a certain way as an actress, and I don't beat myself up about that stuff anymore," Hathaway told DeGeneres.

In recent months, Hathaway has been vocal about her changing body size and the camaraderie among the "Ocean's 8" stars.

During a recent visit to NBC's "Today" show, the actress said that she has been gaining weight for a film role, and is happy with her body. She also added that there were no fights on the "Ocean's" set

The shocking age differences between 30 fictional parents and their children

0

More often than not, kids on TV and in movies are actually played by actors who have left childhood behind years before— and their real ages aren't taken into account when casting their parents. But this problem isn't limited to children. Tom Selleck and his TV dad Len Cariou on "Blue Bloods" are just six years apart in real life.

These 31 pairs of on-screen parents and their offspring are just too close in age to be realistic — in a few cases, the "kids" are even older than their "parents."

Keep scrolling to see how much older your favorite fictional parents are than their "kids."

The mother-daughter duo of Amy Poehler and Rachel McAdams is only seven years apart. McAdams was 26 when she starred as high school junior Regina George in "Mean Girls."

When "Mean Girls" was released in 2004, Poehler was 33 and McAdams was 26.

Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful women on Earth, a 29-year-old Angelina Jolie played 28-year-old Colin Farrell's mother in notorious flop "Alexander."

You'd be forgiven for forgetting about this movie — it was a critical and financial failure. Perhaps it had something to do with its ridiculous casting of Jolie and Farrell as mother and son, even though they're 11 months apart.

Alexis Bledel and Lauren Graham are intentionally close in age — just 15 years apart. In "Gilmore Girls," Lorelai was a teen when she gave birth to Rory.

Lorelai and Rory Gilmore have one of the most iconic mother-daughter relationships on TV — they're more like best friends than family. According to the storyline, Lorelai got pregnant as a teenager, and ran away from home to raise Rory on her own.

So it was true-to-life that the people at The WB cast Bledel and Graham, who are only 15 years apart. But a more glaring age gap was between Lorelai and Lane, Rory's best friend, who was supposed to be the same age as Rory. However, the actress playing Lane, Keiko Agena, is only six years younger than Graham.

Ad-supported TV streaming has reached 'an inflection point' — and it has huge implications for the TV business

streaming TV

  • TV streaming is still dominated by ad free services like Netflix. But ad supported TV streaming is surging.
  • The number of ad impressions delivered via "connected TVs" skyrocketed by 178% last year, according to ad tech firm Innovid.
  • At the moment, OTT ad spending is still a fraction of the $70 billion TV ad market in the US. But its expected to grow rapidly. The ad tech firm SpotX predicts connected TV ad spending will approach $1 billion globally by 2020.
  • That's providing a glimmer a hope for TV advertisers who are worried about evaporating live TV ratings.

People aren't just streaming tons of Netflix and Amazon shows on their smart TVs. They're starting to watch more content with ads.

That should provide a glimmer of hope for TV networks and TV advertisers, both of which are grappling with declining audiences for live TV.

Over the past year, the number of ad impressions delivered 'over the top,' that is, through services like Hulu and Crackle to TV networks apps, surged 178%, according to the video ad tech firm Innovid.

During that same period, the number of OTT advertisers jumped by 28%, said the company, which helps place ads within both TV and web video content.

To be sure, Innovid doesn't see every single OTT ad. But the company says its tech is plugged into 55 million households, so it has a solid vantage point when it comes to gauging macro video ad trends. In fact, Innovid has just put out its annual Global Video Benchmark report.

"We're seeing an inflection point for OTT ads," said Innovid president Beth-Ann Eason. Last year, OTT ads represented about 150 billion impressions, or roughly 17% of the total digital ad inventory Innovid tracked. This year that number is on track to hit 28%, she said.

"What's amazing to us is the speed of growth," she said. "The adoption of that medium is just incredible. And the audiences that are available for advertisers are the kind that are not readily available in linear TV."

Indeed, given the opportunity with OTT ads, companies are jockeying to control as much of that space as possible, including Roku and increasingly Amazon, as Business Insider reported.

At the moment, OTT ad spending is still a fraction of the $70 billion TV ad market in the US. But its expected to grow rapidly. The ad tech firm SpotX predicts connected TV ad spending will approach $1 billion globally by 2020.

Given those stakes, Eason said it was crucial that media companies don't screw the OTT opportunity up by overloading screens with too many ads. So far, she's been encouraged, given the broadcast networks' recent public pledges to cut down on ad overload, on apps and on linear TV.

Among the report's other highlights:

  • Besides the growth of connected TV advertising, more advertisers are using data to better target consumers in video ad campaigns. Last year the firm saw a 58% jump in the number of data-driven video ad efforts.
  • More people are showing a willingness to interact with connected TV ads. Although TV is thought to be mostly a passive experience, Innovid tracked a 28% engagement rate in 2017 for OTT campaigns.
  • And custom interactive ads enjoyed a 237% lift in engagement (e.g. clicking on an ad using their remote controls to get more information or share an email address).

The first 'Game of Thrones' prequel show is moving forward at HBO — here's what you need to know

0

Bran Stark Night King Game of Thrones

  • HBO is officially moving forward with a pilot for the first "Game of Thrones" prequel show.
  • In a press release, the show's description indicates it will take place following the Age of Heroes.
  • The series (untitled for now) is co-created by Jane Goldman and George R.R. Martin.
  • Goldman will also serve as showrunner for the series.
  • This could mean seeing characters from George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" that include Bran the Builder, the White Walkers, and more.

The first news about HBO's plan for a "Game of Thrones" successor show came Friday after with Entertainment Weekly's report on an ordered pilot. HBO is moving forward with a pilot for a prequel series set thousands of years before the events on "Game of Thrones."

In a press release shared with INSIDER, the description for the planned series says it will take place following the Age of Heroes:

"Taking place thousands of years before the events of 'Game of Thrones,' the series chronicles the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros' history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend … it's not the story we think we know."

The Age of Heroes and the Long Night

The Age of Heroes is dictated in George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series as well as the encyclopedia-style text "A World of Ice and Fire." The Age of Heroes begins about 10,000 years before the current time frame in "Game of Thrones."

Leaf Children of the Forest Game of Thrones season six

As the untitled series synopsis indicates, the descent into the "darkest hour" likely means we could see the Long Night played out on screen. This is the legendary tale told to Bran Stark in "A Song of Ice and Fire" and on "Game of Thrones" by Old Nan.

"What do you know about fear?" Nan told Bran on the first season of HBO's iconic series. "Fear is for the winter when the snows fall a hundred feet deep. Fear is for the Long Night, when the sun hides for years and children are born and live and die all in darkness ... when the White Walkers move through the woods. Thousands of years ago, there came a night that lasted a generation."

In the books, her story elaborates on a mysterious hero:

"So as cold and death filled the earth, the last hero determined to seek out the [Children of the Forest], in the hopes that their ancient magics could win back what the armies of men had lost. He set out into the dead lands with a sword, a horse, a dog, and a dozen companions. For years he searched until he despaired of ever finding the Children of the Forest in their secret cities. One by one his friends died, and his horse, and finally even his dog, and his sword froze so hard the blade snapped when he tried to use it. And the [White Walkers] smelled the hot blood in him and came silent on his trail, stalking him with packs of pale white spiders big as hounds — ."

Her story is interrupted, just as it was on the show.

Given the major significance of the White Walkers and the Night King on "Game of Thrones," it will be interesting to see how HBO's adaptation possibly retells their origin story in a way Martin's novels have yet to explore.

What you need to know about showrunner Jane Goldman

George R.R. Martin has co-written the pilot with Jane Goldman, a British screenwriter and producer. Goldman's most notable works has included movies like "Kick Ass,""X-Men: First Class," and the "Kingsman" action movie franchise. Goldman also wrote the screenplay for Disney's live action version of "The Little Mermaid," which is currently in development.

Having a woman at the helm of the first planned "Game of Thrones" successor show is a thrilling prospect for many fans. "Game of Thrones" had one female director (out of 19 total) during its eight season run, and only four episodes (out of 73) were written by women

game of thrones daenerys jon snow

The pilot pick-up also doesn't mean "Game of Thrones" fans are guaranteed to see this untitled project come to life. As Martin announced on his blog last year, HBO had five total successor shows in the script development stage with no promise of how many would actually become fully fledged TV shows or miniseries.

"Game of Thrones" will return for its eighth and final sometime in 2019 (likely springtime but more on that here).
