  • Reality TV is a huge part of the television landscape today.
  • CableTV used Google Trends data to figure out what the most-searched reality TV show was in every state in 2017.
  • Long-running shows like "The Bachelor" and "Dancing with the Stars" were popular in many states, but newcomers like "Hunted" also took some states by storm.

According to Vox, 750 reality TV shows aired in 2015, and that number is only rising.

So it's no surprise that the genre also took over Google last year. CableTV used Google Trends data between October 2016 and October 2017 to find out what reality TV each state was Googling the most last year.

While some pairs make sense, like Texas and "Little Women: Dallas," others don't have an obvious connection, like New Hampshire and "Long Island Medium."

Keep scrolling to find out what your state's favorite reality TV show was last year.

ALABAMA: "American Idol"

The people of Alabama are probably very excited for the revival of "American Idol," with new episodes premiering in 2018.

ALASKA: "Naked and Afraid"

It's not shocking that this nature-based survivalist show would be popular in Alaska, which has the lowest population density of any US state.

ARIZONA: "Keeping Up With the Kardashians"

Fun fact: Kourtney Kardashiangraduated from the University of Arizona in 2002.

12 fan-favorite shows Netflix has revived or rebooted, ranked from worst to best

arrested development

Netflix has been doing nostalgia better than just about anyone in recent years.

As the company has leaned into making its own shows, a big piece of its strategy has been reviving fan favorites like "Full House,""Arrested Development," and "Gilmore Girls." Most recently, the service brought back the reality series "Queer Eye."

Given Netflix's love of data, this commitment to nostalgia makes sense.

If you can see that people keep binge-watching "Gilmore Girls" over and over again, why not make a new series? You already know there's an audience for it. (That seems to have translated into viewership, at least for the "Gilmore Girls" and "Full House" revivals).

But are these revivals any good?

To try and answer that question, we turned to reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and looked at what the critics had to say. Here's a list of shows Netflix has brought back from the dead, ranked from worst to best in critical reception, along with a short description (we excluded kids' shows). We also split the two versions of "Wet Hot American Summer" for clarity.

Nathan McAlone contributed to an earlier version of this post.

REVIEW: 'Everything Sucks!' is a charming new Netflix teen series you're sure to fall in love with

Luke Kate Boring Oregon sign Everything Sucks! Netflix

Netflix may have struck gold with its new nostalgia-fest TV series "Everything Sucks!" The 10-episode long series tells the story of high schoolers living in Boring, Oregon, during the 1990s.

Though the show falls into a bit of a trap with over-indulgence in '90s references, the fantastic character dynamics and engaging cast helps push "Everything Sucks!" into addictive TV territory.

Why you should care

Netflix trots out more new TV shows than anyone can rightfully keep up with these days. But "Everything Sucks!" set itself apart with shorter episodes (around 20 minutes each) and a great balance of levity and seriousness.

Following vaguely in the footsteps of "Stranger Things," this new show tries to capitalize on a nostalgia while staying far away from the sci-fi/mystery aspect of the Upside Down and Eleven.

Emaline and Oliver Everything Sucks! Netflix

Instead, "Everything Sucks!" is a touching and relatable series about the woes of finding your way through high school. The diverse cast tackles everything from a gay coming out storyline to the unexpected romance found between two single parents.

What's hot

"Everything Sucks!" mainly follows four characters: Luke O'Neil (Jahi Winston) and his single mom Sherry (Claudine Nako), alongside Kate Messner (Peyton Kennedy) and her single dad Ken (Patch Darragh).

Luke is the type of freshman boy every adult wishes they knew in high school. He's smart and an endless source of entertainment who goes from charmingly kind to erratically moody (like many teenagers).

Paige comes to life as an introvert trying to navigate all the hellish ways high school seems to punish kids who are less inclined to socialize (or are forced into silence because of their sexuality).

Kate Messner Everything Sucks! Netflix

The show's soundtrack is wonderfully peppered with '90s hits. The use of Oasis's "Wonderwall" is a particularly poignant choice, and echoes the way Oscar-nominated movie "Lady Bird" brought Dave Matthews Band's "Crash" back into people's Spotify streams.

The supporting cast of characters, especially Sherry and Ken, all shine and endear viewers to the family and friend dynamics at play. Running jokes (like the inappropriate jokes made by one of the morning announcement anchors) help thread episodes together seamlessly.

Mr. Messner and Ms. O'Neil toiler paper Everything Sucks! Netflix

What's not

"Everything Sucks!" sometimes rams '90s references into scenes or storylines in a way that feels forced, but it's ultimately not a show-ruiner. Plus younger viewers likely won't notice or pick up on many references if they weren't entering high school around 1997.

Instead, it's just added flavor to the show's fresh take on teen angst as well as the trials of being a single parent and trying to date.

The bottom line

"Everything Sucks!" is more than worth a weekend-binge, and is sure to spread among the Netflix aficionados as word-of-mouth picks up. You'll want to be ahead of the game when it comes to this enduring teen comedy.

'Stranger Things' star David Harbour spent weeks traveling to the Antarctic to meet some penguins after his tweet request went viral

David Harbour Stranger Things Anatarctic Penguins Greenpeace

  • "Stranger Things" star David Harbour has fulfilled fan challenges for retweets before.
  • But now it's his turn. Through Twitter, he asked Greenpeace to send him to Antarctica.
  • Harbour wanted to do the "Hopper Dance" with the penguins.
  • After weeks of grueling travel by sea, Harbour finally got his wish.
  • He shared the epic video on Twitter, along with a Greenpeace petition.
  • "Protect the Antarctic" is a petition that's been signed by over one million people — and Harbour wants to double that number.

"Stranger Things" star and originator of the "Hopper Dancing" meme David Harbour has made several epic promises to lucky Twitter followers over the last few months (including taking senior photos with a fan and pledging to officiate another's wedding). But now it's his turn.

After asking Greenpeace to send him to the Antarctic, Harbour received over 200,000 retweets and was soon on his way to meet some penguins.

"Internet, listen," Harbour had written in his plea. "I'm a giver. I give and I give. But now I need you. I need 200k retweets to go dance with penguins. Please internet. Please retweet THIS TWEET. Please. A man needs his 'guins."

On January 22, Greenpeace publicly promised to get Harbour to the 'guins. And almost one month later, on February 19, Harbour was finally able to upload the video of his dreams:

The journey changed Harbour into a conservation activist

In a second video Harbour posted on Twitter, he explained how his weeks-long journey from the US to Antarctic shifted his perceptions.

"I thought this was going to be a silly thing — I thought I was just going to dance with penguins," Harbour said to the camera. "But ultimately […] this turned into another thing about protecting the Antarctic waters and this huge conservation movement that's going on. It humbled me and my narcissism."

Harbour shared a Greenpeace petition titled "Protect the Antarctic," which aims to create an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary. This would help protect the massive area from "expanding industrial fishing" and climate change.

"We need the members of the Antarctic Ocean Commission — the international body tasked with the protection of Antarctic marine ecosystem — to stop dragging their feet and protect the Antarctic Ocean," Greenpeace writes. "By working together we can urge members of the Antarctic Ocean Commission to put the Antarctic first and secure an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary."

The petition had one million signatures, according to Harbour's tweets. He's hoping his fans will boost that number to 1.8 million — one signature for "every proposed square km for the 'guins."

This transformation into an activist has been happening for weeks over on Harbour's Instagram feed. Along with his girlfriend Alison Sudol (known as singer A Fine Frenzy and Queenie in the "Fantastic Beasts" franchise), Harbour has been sharing videos and photos of their journey through the Antarctic landscape.

Here's what every winner of 'The Voice' is up to now

We're just days away from Season 14 of "The Voice," debuting Feb. 28 on CBS with new judge Kelly Clarkson. As the premiere nears, we couldn't help but wonder what happened to all the past winners of the TV singing competition series.

Here, we take a look at the champs from season 1 through 12.

(We figure we'll give Season 13 winner Chloe Kohanski a moment to get used to her newfound fame before we start tracking her post-"Voice" career.)

Season 1: Javier Colon

After jumping ship from Universal Republic Records, Javier Colon signed on with Concord Music Group in 2014. He debuted his fourth album, "Gravity," in 2016 and went on to tour behind the album.

Last year, the self-described "acoustic soul" artist starred in "Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" at Unquowa Repertory Theatre in Connecticut – his home state – and performed with Charleston Symphony Orchestra for Broadway Under the Stars in South Carolina.

Season 2: Jermaine Paul

Jermaine Paul's debut album, tentatively titled "Make Love Save The World," never came to fruition (it was supposed to drop in 2015), and it seems his career has stalled quite a bit.

However, the singer-songwriter has participated in some low-profile events like fundraisers and performances in smaller venues, including at The Theatre at North in Pennsylvania in December.

Season 3: Cassadee Pope

Country singer Cassadee Pope has maintained her share of the spotlight since her win. She and Chris Young received a Grammy nomination for the 2015 duet "Think of You"— making her the first "The Voice" contestant to receive a Grammy nod.

In 2016, she released the EP "Summer" and went on to sing the "Star Spangled Banner" at the Brickyard 400 NASCAR race and at an NFL game that year.

Last May, she split with BMLG records, and she signed on with Fusion Music in January.

Chris Hardwick explains why his successful game show '@midnight' had to die: 'We were not a political show'

0

chris hardwick laughing

  • Chris Hardwick's show "@midnight" was canceled in August, even though it was a success for Comedy Central.
  • Hardwick told INSIDER that his show wasn't suitable for a new era of politically-charged late-night comedy.
  • Comedy Central wanted more politics in its late-night lineup, and Hardwick was ready to move on.
  • He's still keeping busy with a network of podcasts and various TV and movie projects.

Ever since "@midnight With Chris Hardwick" ended its Emmy-winning four-year run in August, its host has only gotten more busy. But why did the show — a viral hit and a possible signal of the future for Comedy Central — get canceled in the first place?

The culprit, Hardwick told INSIDER, was politics.

"We were not a political show," Hardwick said. "We started doing politics in the last year, but that was only because it so dominated social media and our show was designed to talk about what people on social media were talking about."

There's still plenty of Hardwick to go around. He oversees a network of podcast under his "ID10T" banner, hosted a half-dozen talk shows in AMC, is producing even more projects for other networks, and plans to make three movies with Blumhouse.

But "@midnight" is still missed. And when it ended, there remained some mystery over why Comedy Central would cancel such a successful show.

Late-night comedy became all about politics.

According to Hardwick, the show increasingly began to occupy an ungainly spot in the network's lineup. "@midnight" wasn't built to adapt to the increasingly charged discussions in comedy and late-night television created by the political rise of Donald Trump.

Because "@midnight" had a game show structure, it wasn't easy for him to have the depth or nuance needed to cover political topics, like John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight" on HBO or TBS's Samantha Bee talk show, "Full Frontal."

"It was very difficult for us to cover heavier topics because we never wanted to seem frivolous about it," Hardwick said. "There are some topics that you just don’t want to gloss over with just jokes. You want to really dive into them. And we find that difficult to do."

In any case, he wanted his show to be a form of escapism for its audience. That became harder to do with the frantic pace of the news — especially with a time slot that was just before most people go to bed.

"Political comedy really divides people," Hardwick said. "I wanted our show to be celebratory and sort of bring people together. ... People don't need to be reminded that the world is falling apart 24/7."

chris hardwick midnight emmy win

At the same time, Viacom and Comedy Central went through high-level executive shakeups, and network heads wanted to lean into political comedy for its late-night programming. "@midnight," which had shifted time slots since Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert left the network, didn't fit neatly into their vision.

"You had this kind of new regime that was probably looking at new programming that they wanted to do," Hardwick said. "They really wanted to put a political show at 11:30 p.m. to pair with ["The Daily Show With Trevor Noah"]."

The network ultimately put a new show, "The Opposition With Jordan Klepper"— an "Infowars" parody starring a "Daily Show" alumnus — in the 11:30 p.m. slot and dropped "@midnight."

Hardwick was ready to move on.

Hardwick wasn't too bothered. After four years and a planned 600 episodes, he was starting to feel he had done everything on the show that he wanted to do. He wanted to go out on a high note.

"I don't think anyone wanted to be in a place where the show just felt like it had plateaued and then kept going," he said. "It felt like the right time. We had the opportunity to go out gracefully."

chris hardwick lydia hearst

Hardwick is keeping busy with his podcasts, TV shows, and movie-producing producing projects — but he still misses "@midnight."

"There are not a lot of platforms for stand-up comedians on television anymore," he said. "It was a good discovery platform. Just as a comedy fan, I loved that element."

Comedy Central didn't immediately respond to INSIDER's request for comment.

Jimmy Kimmel explains his reaction to Fergie's 'unusually sultry' rendition of the National Anthem

  • Fergie gave a unique rendition of the National Anthem at the NBA All-Star game on Sunday.
  • It instantly went viral in part because of the reactions by the players and Jimmy Kimmel, who were all caught on-camera holding back laughs and smiles.
  • Kimmel explained why he was smiling during the song on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Tuesday.

To kick off Sunday's NBA All-Star Game, singer Fergie had the honor of singing the National Anthem. But her unique rendition didn't go the way she planned, and it instantly went viral.

A big reason for it becoming an internet sensation was because of the reaction of the players and Jimmy Kimmel, who were all caught holding back smiles and laughs while Fergie belted out a sensual rendition of the anthem.

Jimmy Kimmel Nation Anthem NBA All Star ABCOn Tuesday's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," the late-night host explained why he was smiling during what he described as, an "unusually sultry" version of the song.

"The reason I was smiling is because I love the National Anthem so much," he jokingly told his audience. "That’s the face I make."

Kimmel went on to say, "I didn’t realize I was on camera, then my phone started buzzing and texting."

Fergie has released a statement saying, "I've always been honored and proud to perform the National Anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA. I'm a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn't strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best."

"Here’s the thing about taking risks," said Kimmel Tuesday night, who noted that the singer didn't intentionally try to ruin the song. "When it comes to the National Anthem — don’t. Don’t take risks when you’re doing brain surgery, don’t take risks when you’re driving a school bus or singing the National Anthem. Just regular is fine."

Kimmel added, however: "In Fergie’s defense, we don’t know what Francis Scott Key was thinking when he wrote 'The Star-Spangled Banner,' maybe he wanted it to be sexy."

Here's Kimmel talking about being part Fergie's viral moment:

frankenstein chronicles

  • Netflix's latest foreign find, the UK cult hit "The Frankenstein Chronicles," is a binge-worthy detective drama that stars "Game of Thrones" actor Sean Bean.
  • Netflix released its first two six-episode seasons to US and global audiences on Monday.

Netflix has found yet another great foreign series in the UK cult hit "The Frankenstein Chronicles," which the streaming service released the first two seasons of on Monday for US and global audiences.

Set in London in 1827, "The Frankenstein Chronicles" follows detective John Marlott (played by "Game of Thrones" star Sean Bean) as he tracks down a killer who combined the bodies of eight missing children.

The show's plot parallels Mary Shelley's classic 1818 novel "Frankenstein," but it's more a reimagining of that story than an adaption of it.

Its first two six-episode seasons aired on ITV's now-defunct Encore channel.

Netflix's decision to pick up the series globally and label it a "Netflix Original" has some criticsspeculating that the service could carry the series for subsequent seasons if it performs well.

"The Frankenstein Chronicles" has yet to find much traction with US critics a few days after its domestic release, but the series has earned consistent praise in the UK.

The Telegraph called it "bold, eerily effective and chillingly atmospheric," and The Guardian labeled it a "genuinely rather good" series that "offers real rare shivers."

12 surprising things you didn't know about 'Keeping Up With The Kardashians'

kardashians tao

What don’t we know about the Kardashians? From their relationship statuses and pregnancies to the smallest parts of their daily habits, social media users, fans, and pretty much everyone in between seems to be keeping up, whether they like it or not.

In part, this is due to the family’s TV show, "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," which has essentially turned them into household names. Despite their notoriety, it turns out that there are actually quite a few things about the Kardashian family and their show that aren’t exactly public knowledge.

No, that was most likely not actually the moment Khloe Kardashian found out she was pregnant.

In the scenerevealing her pregnancy, Khloe found out that she was pregnant with an at-home test, presented it to her assistant Alexa, and then said she’d be waiting and keeping it a secret until announcing it at a family barbecue. As sweet as the moment was, Khloe had been pregnant for at least a few months and was most likely very much aware of it during filming, according to Kardashian expert and TheCut.com writer Mariah Smith.

The scene in question was filmed in October, Smith reported, months after the barbecue in question. It’s likely that Khloe didn’t have cameras present when she actually found out or wanted to keep the moment private.

In fact, some scenes, including Kim’s engagement to Kris Humphries, have been reshot or rehearsed.

According to court documents during Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian’s very messy divorce trial, “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” producer Russell Jay admitted that at least two scenes directly related to the estranged couple’s relationship had been reshot. These scenes included those in which Kim and her mom discussed the divorce, Kim discovered a party in her hotel room, and Kris’ proposal, which they decided to redo because Kim allegedly didn’t like her initial reaction.

Despite this, Kim and Kris’ wedding episode remains the highest-rated in the series.

Before it began, names for the series included “Kardashians: Krazy With A K” and “Living Kardashian.”

Before the series first aired on October 14, 2007, producers were at a loss for what exactly to name the show.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Damla Dogan, the senior vice president of development and programming at E!, said that several titles had floated around for the series, but none really stuck.

Finally, when Farnaz Farjam, the vice president of programming at Bunim/Murray, showed up to a meeting without any ideas, she said she was “too busy keeping up with the Kardashians” as an excuse. It was a hit.

“I came up with it on accident because I was living it,” Farjam said.

  • Jimmy Kimmel called out Donald Trump Jr. for "perpetuating" conspiracy theories about one of the Florida school shooting survivors on Wednesday night.
  • In his monologue, Kimmel blasted far-right conspiracy theorists for claiming that some of the survivors were really "crisis actors" advancing a liberal agenda.

Jimmy Kimmel addressed the activism of the Parkland, Florida school shooting survivors on Wednesday night's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" The host also lashed out at those peddling conspiracy theories about the survivors, including Donald Trump Jr.

Kimmel began his monologue by discussing the class walkouts that the survivors orchestrated on Wednesday after the Florida state legislature refused to debate a bill banning assault weapons.

He then turned his attention to the far-right conspiracy theories that claim some of the survivors were really "crisis actors" advancing a liberal agenda. Kimmel called out Donald Trump Jr. for liking two conspiracy stories on Twitter that attacked one of the students.

"This is our president's son doing that," Kimmel said. "Liking a story that directly defames a student that survived a shooting."

Kimmel went on to call conspiracy theorists "crazy," and said that those who don't believe the conspiracies about the survivors "can't just sit there and let these scumbags spread these lies about these kids."

Billionaire Bill Gates failed miserably at guessing grocery prices in a quiz game on 'Ellen'

  • Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates failed miserably at guessing the price of common grocery items in a quiz game on "Ellen" Wednesday.
  • He thought a $20 container of Tide Pods cost $4 and gave a wildly exorbitant guess at the cost of a bag of Totino's Pizza Rolls.
  • He nailed the price of dental floss.

It may come as no surprise that Bill Gates, the second richest person in the world, has no clue what groceries cost.

The billionaire Microsoft cofounder appeared on "Ellen" Wednesday and had a tough time guessing the prices of common consumer items in a quiz game.

"We're going to test your knowledge of some everyday items that you get at the supermarket," Ellen DeGeneres said to Gates. "When was the last time that you've been at a supermarket?"

"A long time ago," Gates replied.

In the game, Gates guessed that $1 Rice-a-Roni cost $5. He thought a large container of Tide Pods cost $4, but it costs $19.97. He also gave a wildly exorbitant guess at the cost of a bag of Totino's Pizza Rolls ($22).

"This is my best chance, at this one," Gates said, as the game turned to guessing the price of a dental floss container.

After professing that he "absolutely" flosses, Gates nailed the price of floss at $4.

  • Netflix has released its list of what’s staying and what’s leaving in the month of March 2018.
  • There are highly-anticipated new titles officially streaming on the service, as well as old favorites making their exits this month.
  • Highlights include a new season of "Jessica Jones" and the departure of some animated classics.

In comparison to January, February practically flew by. Obviously, February being the shortest month of the year has its perks, but one of its downfalls is that it means less time for Netflix. Luckily, March is full of new arrivals on the streaming service, and a full 31 days to actually watch them, so consider your schedule open.

Just in case you already binge-watched every episode of "Queer Eye," the new arrivals include the second season of the critically-acclaimed "Jessica Jones" as well as old favorites like "Cruel Intentions" and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall."

Of course, March isn't without its goodbyes. "The Carmichael Show,""Anastasia," and other shows and movies will be making their exit from the streaming service in March.

Jennifer Lawrence says she felt empowered doing nudity in her new movie following her 2014 nude photo hack

60 Minutes Jennifer Lawrence CBS

  • Jennifer Lawrence explained to "60 Minutes" why it was important for her to have nude scenes in her new movie, "Red Sparrow."
  • She said she felt "empowered" to do the racy scenes following nude photos of her being leaked online in 2014 after her phone was hacked.

Jennifer Lawrence's new movie "Red Sparrow" is a spy movie filled with violence, sex, and nudity, the latter of which the Oscar-winning actress was worried about taking on, according to her upcoming interview on Sunday for "60 Minutes."

In 2014, Lawrence was the victim of a photo hack that led to nude photos of her being leaked online. Late last year, she said it was something that she was still processing, however, she told "60 Minutes" correspondent Bill Whitaker that she ended up feeling "empowered" doing the nude scene in the movie.

“I realized that there was a difference between consent and not and I showed up for the first day and I did it and I felt empowered,” Lawrence said. “I feel like something that was taken from me I got back and am using in my art.”

In "Red Sparrow," Lawrence plays a Russian ballerina-turned-assassin who goes through some unique training: her expertise is to use seduction and manipulation.

Business Insider has seen the movie, and Lawrence is involved in a few sexually graphic scenes and in one scene she gets fully undressed for a training scene in which she uses her sexuality to intimidate a man.

In the interview, she also discussed dropping out of middle school. "I wanted to forge my own path," she said. "I found what I wanted to do and I didn't want anything getting in the way of it."

Lawrence's "60 Minutes" interview will air on Sunday at 7 p.m. EST. "Red Sparrow" opens in theaters on March 2.

  • Ahead of the mid-season premiere, star Andrew Lincoln prepared a little goodbye tribute for his on-screen son, Carl (Chandler Riggs).
