Everyone Hates Sookie—Here's This Week's 'True Blood' Recap

$

0

sookie true bloodWarning: This post contains spoilers.

With no vampires, werewolves or a friend in the world, Sookie's learning the world's an unkind place to a girl who helps turn her best friend into a vampire, not to mention a murderer.

For the first time in five seasons, we see Sookie crack under all the pressure of keeping lies and secrets from various outlets.

Meanwhile, Pam gets reunited with Eric (but it's not the welcoming she was hoping for,) someone gets killed, Lafayette's angry streak continues and we return to the faerie world.

Pam rescues Tara from her stupidity and takes her under her wing.

At the end of last week we watched Tara jump into a tanning booth to end her second life.

Naturally, Pam comes to rescue her newborn vampire, and, so Tara doesn't try again, she explicitly commands her to stay away from the suicide routine. Pam knows a lot about that.

Eric returns to Pam and he's not happy.

Eric finally returns to Shreveport and Pam greets him with great news ... that he's a grandfather

He's in no mood for humor since he believes Pam dug up Russell.

He's dead wrong.

Pam is shocked her maker thinks she could have betrayed him after the two have spent more than a century together. It's clear to us, since he's been missing, how much she cares for Eric.

Eric says Pam would be a fool to ever die for him since he doesn't trust anyone.

Hurt, Pam asks for her maker to release her from his bind.

Eric releases Pam.

You ask, and you shall receive.

With the vampire authority wanting his blood, Eric decides it's in Pam's best interest to let her go.

He sees Pam as his only prodigy and wants her to live when (if?) he's gone since he believes his days are numbered.

In the wake of Eric leaving her, Pam starts to focus on mentoring Tara.

the patriot

Whether you're hosting a big barbeque with friends and family or staying at home this July 4th, there will be plenty of television shows and films honoring the red, white and blue.

We flipped through TV Guide listings to see just how patriotic television's line-up will be tomorrow.

While some screenings make sense—"Stars and Stripes Forever" and the ubiquitous "Patriot—others have us scratching our heads. (ABC Family will host a 12-hour marathon of "America's Funniest Home Videos" while AMC will air "Coach Carter" in the morning.)

Here are the patriotic films and shows airing this Independence Day.

1:45 p.m — AMC will show "Glory" (1989) the film about the all-black 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War as they're led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick).

4:30 p.m. — AMC will air "The Patriot" (2000) where farmer Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) forms a group of Carolina patriots to uprise against the British troops during the American Revolution after his son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) is captured.

5 p.m. — TCM will show "1776" (1972) which follows the days leading up to July 4 when Benjamin Franklin and John Adams pressure Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence. The film is based on the Broadway musical.

'Fringe' Production Delayed Due To Star John Noble's Sleeping Disorder

John-Noble

It hasn't been an easy start for the fifth and final season of "Fringe."

Production on the Fox sci-fi drama's final season began last Wednesday and continued through Friday, but stopped Monday so the cast could attend the Television Critics Association press tour panel. Showrunner J.H. Wyman said actor John Noble could not attend the event because he was  "under the weather."

On Tuesday, The Hollywood Reporter said that the production delay would extend due to star Jaskia Nicole's car accident and multiple illnesses in the cast. Blair Brown missed Comic-Con a few weeks ago because of a cold, and now the perennially Emmy-snubbed Noble is being treated for a sleep disorder.

What was thought to be a three day delay will now extend to about August 7, nine shooting days. During the two week pause, the 63-year-old actor will seek treatment.

The delay should not effect the show's September 28 premiere date.

"This Morning" launched in January to compete with morning powerhouses NBC's "Today" and ABC's "Good Morning America."

O'Donnell was the chief White House correspondent for CBS News. Before that she spent over a decade with NBC and MSNBC, including work as a contributing correspondent on "Today."

the buellers celebrity art

We stopped in our tracks when coming across these celebrity family portraits done in colored pencil–yes, colored pencils.

From Nic Cage in "Raising Arizona" to Jon Hamm in "Mad Men," we noticed the portraits making the rounds on Reddit and decided to put a name with the many faces drawn.

Now, a professional artist, Kirk Demarais was previously a graphics and greeting card designer before returning to his first love of drawing. You can read more on Demarais' transition to a full-time artist described in his own words, here.

"I started making the colored pencil portraits in 2008 for Gallery 1988's annual Crazy 4 Cult art show in which a group of artists create work inspired by cult films," Demarais told us.

His art has become so well known that he's received commissions from celebrities including Kristen Wiig and executive producer of "Little Miss Sunshine," the Jeb Brody.

Any one portrait can take him anywhere from one and a half to three weeks to complete.

Demarais believes he's drawn a total of 28 portraits to date, though not all of them contain complete families.

Currently, he's working on a separate piece for this summer's Crazy 4 Cult gallery in New York City.

This Little Miss Sunshine portrait of "The Hoovers" was commissioned by producer Jeb Brody.

Zach Galifianakis Calls Out Jon Stewart On 'The Daily Show'

Zach Galifianakis must really hate traditional interviews.

First "The Campaign" actor showed up on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," turning the tables on the host two nights ago, and then appeared on "The Daily Show" with co-star Will Ferrell causing more chaos last night.

On "Fallon" the two switched spots … and personalities. Galifianakis sat behind Jimmy Fallon's desk, pretending to be the host, interviewing Galifianakis (played by Fallon). If it sounds confusing, check out the clip:

Galifianakis' appearance on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" last night with Ferrell was even better.

After a few minutes of what Ferrell sarcastically called "lame questions," and Galifianakis calling out the host's journalistic integrity, Stewart went "H.A.M.," bringing in "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm to even the playing field.

However, that didn't last long. Hamm quickly switched sides, also noting the host's "terrible" questions, forcing Stewart to "apologize" to his audience.

"The Campaign" opens August 10.

CNN Chief Jim Walton Quits

$

jim waltonNEW YORK (AP) — CNN chief Jim Walton said Friday he is quitting, saying the company needs new leadership at a time its flagship U.S. network is suffering through some of its poorest ratings ever.

Walton built the company into a profitable international news organization in his 10 years as president of CNNWorldwide, and said it is on track for record profits this year. But the U.S. network is the most visible part of the business and is now entrenched in third place behind rivals Fox News Channel and MSNBC in prime time.

He announced the decision in an email to staff members on Friday. He said he'll continue working until the end of the year during the company's search for a successor.

Walton said he's been talking to his boss, Turner Broadcasting Chairman Phil Kent, about leaving since the first few months of the year. CNN is owned by Time Warner.

"There's always pressure," he said. "I've been doing this a long time and CNN has had its ups and downs, like all companies have had ups and downs. I feel really strongly about a number of parts of this company. We're having a really strong year internationally and in mobile. It's clear there's a lot of spotlight on CNN's U.S. performance and it's reasonable that there is that spotlight."

CNN's U.S. network had its worst-ever ratings for a second quarter, down 40 percent for some of its prime-time shows. The decline was particularly notable in May, when CNN faced tough competition from broadcast networks during a slow news period and its ratings were compared to a year earlier, in the aftermath of the Osama bin Laden killing.

It hasn't improved appreciably since then, with veteran newsman Wolf Blitzer often losing in the ratings to broadcast novice Al Sharpton on MSNBC. Piers Morgan's show has been a bright spot this month.

The network was also embarrassed by initially reporting incorrectly the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on President Obama's health care law, then taking longer to correct itself than Fox, which made a similar error.

CNN's ratings traditionally fluctuate based on the intensity of the news. Fox and MSNBC have insulated themselves from that problem somewhat through its partisan prime-time hosts. Walton has resisted this approach, believing CNN's strength lies in being a nonpartisan news source and the company's reputation would be damaged worldwide if the U.S. network changed.

Walton said he doesn't expect that to change after he leaves.

"We kind of know who we are and our corporate colleagues know who we are and there has always been great support internally that we're going to be a news organization," he said.

At CNN, "we want to be accurate above all else, we want to be timely — first if possible — we want to actually go to where the news is, not just subscribe to some agency's news feed and talk about it. We want to report the news from multiple sides, all sides, and without bias."

Walton, 54, began working at CNN in 1981 shortly after it started. His first job involved ripping paper scripts off wire machines and operating the TelePrompter for news anchors.

Jeff Bewkes, Time Warner chairman and CEO, said Walton took over an underperforming company in 2003 and tripled earnings, delivering an annual growth of 15 percent. Roughly half of the company's earnings come through subscription fees from cable and satellite companies, and they have been growing steadily worldwide.

"Jim has been instrumental in growing the business into the financial powerhouse it has become, while establishing the brand as the worldwide leader for television news," Bewkes said. "I respect him personally and professionally and support the decision he and Phil Kent have reached."

Kent said Walton has a track record of great judgment when it matters most. He "challenged the organization to think bigger, reach further, do better," he said.

"I think this company needs some new thinking," Walton said. "I've been doing this job I'm in now for 10 years and I'm ready for a change."

'GMA' Host Robin Roberts May Take Medical Leave Late Next Month

robin roberts

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — "Good Morning America" anchor Robin Roberts is planning to take a medical leave around the end of August for her bone marrow transplant.

But during her absence from the ABC morning show, she'll be getting a little help from her friends, she said Thursday.

Roberts listed Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer and Katie Couric among her "wonderful, wonderful friends at ABC News" who will be subbing for her. Others mentioned: talk-show host Kelly Ripa and panelists from the ABC talk show "The View."

Roberts announced last month that she has MDS, a blood and bone marrow disease once known as preleukemia.

On Thursday, she told reporters gathered for the Television Critics Association conference in Beverly Hills, Calif., that her leave would "most likely" start at the end of August or early September.

"It's fascinating-slash-scary how to prepare yourself for something like this," she said, appearing by satellite from ABC's studios in New York. And when asked how she's feeling, she replied, "I do go through moments of fatigue."

But citing the continuing resurgence of "Good Morning America" against its long-dominant NBC rival "Today," she brightened.

"The run that we've had has truly energized me," she said. "It's pretty good medicine, I gotta say, to be taking!"

In particular, ABC was crowing Thursday that, for the first time in 17 years, "GMA" had seized first place among total viewers (almost 4.6 million vs. 4.25 million for "Today") as well as tying "Today" for first place in the 25- to 54-year-old demographic, each with 1.74 million.

ABC News President Ben Sherwood was inspired to frame the victory in Olympic terms.

"For 852 straight (weekly) races, the 'Today' show won the gold medal, going back to 1995," he said. Then, several weeks ago, "GMA" snapped the "Today" winning streak, "and stood there alone for the first time in 16 years to get its own gold medal."

"And after 879 weeks running behind in younger viewers, 25-to-54," Sherwood went on, "GMA" is "standing there at the gold-medal podium, unbelievably in an actual statistical tie with the previous champs."

Meanwhile, Sherwood acknowledged a mistake ABC News made last week during coverage of the movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., that killed 12 people and injured dozens more.

ABC News Chief Investigative Correspondent Brian Ross speculated on the air about the political ties of the alleged gunman, James Holmes, erroneously identifying him as a member of the tea party.

"It was a mistake," Sherwood said. "We recognized it immediately. We owned it immediately. We corrected it immediately. We apologized for it."

Declaring, "That particular moment didn't live up to the standards and practices of ABC News," he said, "I take responsibility for it. The news division knows how displeased I am about it. And we will do everything we can to prevent it ever happening again."

The-Killing

After just two seasons, AMC has officially cancelled "The Killing."

The series got off to a promising start when it debuted in April 2011 and had everyone wondering who killed Rosie Larsen, but the show never got past its polarizing first season finale, where it frustrated fans by not resolving the show's central murder mystery.

The ratings suffered for the decision in its second and ultimately final season for the network.

"Killing's" production studio Fox Television says they will "proceed to try to find another home for the show."

YouTube 'Hungry Channel' CEO Says The Future Of TV Is Online

$

0

bruce seidel

Add former television exec Bruce Seidel to those jumping on board YouTube to showcase new broadcast content.

In January, Seidel was appointed CEO of Electus' new food-centric YouTube channel Hungry, and just two weeks ago, it finally launched on June 27.

Headed by Seidel, who formerly worked for both the Cooking Channel and the Food Network overseeing shows including "Iron Chef America" and "The Next Food Network Star," the Hungry Channel currently consists of four weekly shows: the Brothers Green, following recipes of two musician brothers who are underground caterers, Summer Desserts Unplugged, showcasing a different Italian dessert every week, Drink Inc., offering weekly cocktails with two of LA's top mixologists, and Casserole Queens, featuring a plethora of recipes from two best friends in Austin.

More shows will roll out as the summer continues including a summer beer cocktail show along with Duff's Food World featuring Duff Goldman ("Ace of Cakes").

We recently spoke with Seidel to learn why he left television to create online content and what sets "Hungry" apart from the competition.

For Seidel, online content is the one unexplored region he hasn't conquered yet.

"In this generation, everyone's using it [the Internet]," said Seidel. "I've always worked with it indirectly and find it critical in my career to harness its potential."

Seidel also points out one of the great things about moving online is creating high-level content at a lower price. That, plus, where else do you have 800 million potential eyeballs at your fingertips every month?

cooking hungry channel youtube laura vitale

As well, the two channels Seidel previously worked for own the foodie demographic. Instead, Seidel says starting a new YouTube channel provides plenty of opportunities unavailable to the food networks on TV. That, plus,

Here are three ways Hungry is setting itself apart from the competition to expand the food category. Take note:

1. Including niche shows which are only touched upon on television.

Seidel says Hungry can evolve upon user needs by focusing on demographics otherwise not reached on the tube, including a future vegan show and gluten-free show, "Bites and Blues."

Granted, there are niche channels out there (The Sweetest Vegan, BBQ Pit Boys) with moderate followings in the ten thousands.

2. Doubling as a teaching tool.

Essentially, the channel helps convert the iPad and YouTube into a personal recipe book on the go.

One of the goals of Hungry is to provide an outlet for people to learn how do prepare different items, according to Seidel. With easily accessible How-to and Thirsty Thursday playlists (the latter is exactly what it sounds like), viewers can access recipes ranging from cupcakes to summer drinks.

Of course, other food channels have this, too, right? Sure, just not to this extent.

While Food Network's YouTube channel, FoodNetwork TV provides its own videos on how to make cocktails there's no real "how to" page on its site. Instead, many of the shows available on its YouTube page feature curated content from its television network–a bit stale for an extension of the Food Network brand online.

The Cooking Channel does a bit of a better job in offering recipes; however, the page isn't intuitive–items aren't directly labeled as recipes versus specials on visiting specific venues making viewers sift through the channel for recipes, something that shall try any web surfer's patience.

In comparison, to Hungry's more than 11,000 current subscribers, FoodNetwork TV has more than 36,000–but joined YouTube November 2006. Meanwhile, the Cooking Channel has slightly more than 1,800 subscribers. Still Hungry has a way to go to reach the 2.6 million subscribers of popular channel Epic Meal Time which joined YouTube September 2010.

drink inc.

3. Providing a heavy focus on user engagement.

One of the other things the channel will take advantage of is user engagement, something television can't receive immediate feedback on.

Seidel says Hungry was created with the viewers in mind. As the channel grows, the channel will listen to user-generated feedback and if there's a real push for a niche item missing from availability–gluten channels–Hungry will consider adding them to their arsenal.

The talent will engage on the channel as well, directly answering back viewers with food-related questions, comments on recipes, etc. Down the line, Seidel sees Google Hangouts with those on the channel and challenges available to viewers to create their own dishes.

Sookie Has A New Enemy–Here's This Week's 'True Blood' Recap

true blood vampiresWarning: This post contains major spoilers.

Well, it's just a big party in Bon Temps.

The shifter-killing gang is still on the loose getting its kicks, Tara is reacquainting herself with old high school friends–torturing them–, Lafayette throws a shindig for Terry and Patrick, and the werewolves hold a farewell gathering (exit) for Alcide.

Meanwhile, the Vampire Authority, now headed by Russell Edgington, is still "high as a kite" off their V trip and begins plotting its next move against mankind.

And, it looks like someone new may be coming after Sookie.

The Lilith cult is still out of control.

Eric is not pleased and has no idea how to escape with Bill and Nora.

... especially since Bill is turning to the dark side.

Eric used to be the bad guy we loved to hate on "True Blood"; however, in spite of all this ridiculous Lilith talk, he's the only one keeping his cool and staying sane.

The original plan to "stay alive" included going along with the Authority's beliefs to escape; however, the longer the two stay, it appears Bill may consider there's more to the afterlife than being the white knight.

Bill appears to be transitioning into a colder, darker version of his former self. We can't say this is surprising since his world turned upside down: everyone's suddenly okay with Edgington's return, Steve Newlin is a vampire, and, to top things off, he sees the love of his life supposedly moving on with a werewolf.

As he tells Eric, he's evolving.

Zombies Take Over The Streets Of NYC In Protest Of Dish Satellite's Decision To Drop AMC

breaking bad season 4 episode 11 screencap

Zombies took to the street recently to protest Dish Network's decision to drop AMC from their service. They have also dropped other AMC Networks Inc.—the parent company of AMC—channels, including WE tv and IFC.

The Vice President of Dish programming, Dave Shull, said in a news release that "AMC Networks requires us to carry low-rated channels like IFC and WE tv to access a few popular AMC shows. The math is simple: it’s not a good value for our customers."

The decision to part ways is the result of an ongoing feud between the two companies. AMC sued Dish Network in 2008 for "breach of contract regarding a distribution agreement."

Dish's decision to drop the network comes as a huge blow as 14 million homes are now cut off from AMC and their highly acclaimed shows, "Breaking Bad" and "The Walking Dead." Just one week before AMC's acclaimed drama "Breaking Bad" returns, AMC has announced that they will show the premiere for free online for all Dish subscribers.

"Every cable, phone and satellite company other than Dish carries AMC," the company said in response. "AMC wants its loyal Dish viewers to experience the excitement of the Breaking Bad premiere at the same time as their friends and neighbors, and we want to give Dish customers an extra week to switch providers so they can enjoy the rest of the season."

As a little extra retaliation, AMC unleashed terrifying zombies onto the street of New York City. Dressed as mailmen, taxi drivers, food cart vendors, and random passers-by, these Hollywood actors sent New Yorkers screaming. Their message? "Zombies don't belong here. Put them back on T.V."
